Clean racing would be great but unfortunatly it's a fact of life that some people online are not interested in that and enjoy mayhem or just plain causing grief to anyone around them. I always try to stick to the racing line and watch my mirrors, if you are behind me I will cover my back once and then let you go if you are faster than me.
The most enjoyable online race i've had was when I and another driver were unfairly shunted off into the sand on the first corner at Suzuka. We both continued to race each other fairly and passed each other about three times. We finished last and second last.
We all like to win but remember it is only a game just try to enjoy yourself.
If being shunted online is your worst problem in life then you're doing ok.
Hope to see you all out there for some fair and enjoyable racing.

Diliberate contact is the issue here. Its gonna be hard to police in a video game. In real racing we have marshalls to make the decisions. How can a processor decide if its deliberate with malicious intent. If they take all the contact out or penalise it the game will become a non event. Looking at the touring car series contact does happen. However if your overtaking someone in a straight line and they perform a pit manouver on you thats illegal. The real answer is gonna be moderated races and or the players driving with their own honour code of conduct.

which is why there should be online moderators to keep things in check.

The online component in prolouge is definitley a huge problem. There is a lack of manners patience and discipline with quite a few racers. I don't think polyphony need us to tell them that it's dump. They just need to work hard and implement the lobby's and voice chat forza style. As soon as we have chat we can try to educate the idiots.

Hi All, first post on these forums although I've been visiting for some time!

I have to say my online experience so far hasn't been that great, but like those that have already mentioned it the worst offenders seem to be in the beginners and intermediate categories.

Best race i've had was just two of us on Daytona Road course in our Integras. Good close racing, i lost, but hey, thats racing! However, next time out an additional player joined the race, and decided it would be good to shove me into the outer wall just because i'd gotten a good run on him out of the last chicane...which is just unforgivable frankly. Certainly isn't the only I've seen/been the victim of this kind of behaviour either.

I haven't really played much in the way of the expert events yet, but think i'll give them a go, from what I've read on here the experience seems infinitely better! That is, until the ability to set our own games up comes along - then i look forward to racing some of you guys online :)

And who do you suggest should pay their salary ?..

I love that I don't have to pay a fee to use my PS3 online, and I prefer to keep it that way...

What about a system where you can approve / blacklist players by PSN ID, at the end of the race (or an in-game menu).

Perhaps then, when auto-matching players for a race, it could attempt to put you in a race with those you approve of... then again, I think it'd take some time to find a race ignoring players you don't wish to race with.

I think servers with a voting system is the way to go. 9/10 people get kicked by a majority vote for a reason, not for a laugh.

I'd also like to see servers that you can join with a circuit cycle so you can stay in a server with a good bunch of people and do other races rather than randomly having to join each time.

Again, private rooms seems to resolve most of these issues!

other solution would be getting volunteers from respected sites like GTP. 💡 or then just having an automated system that kicks the troublemakers out as soon as they start.. also, the online profile that would show the infractions made by the player would be handy.. bit big brother-ish, but i'd like to have quality racing, I've had enough of the chaos on LFS demo servers..

I've been a fan of GT since the very first game on the 1st Playstation system. Finally, it is great to race other Gt enthusiasts online. Reading some of the comments regarding online racing I can agree on, because of my experiences racing online. I've been playing since the Japanese version came out and experiencing online play. The penalty system needs work. Talking about the rammers, crashers, etc., I myself are one of the respectable racers. My reputation racing online is up there with most of the great racers. I usually finish within the top 3 or 4. My reputation on 1st places is up there in high ranks. I usually race HSR, Suzuka, & Fuji F tracks. At times racing, I would get rammed going into a turn or someone spins out and I accidently hit them and get penalized. Hopefully, when the full version comes out, that the penaltly system will be delt with in the right manner. In addition, when the full version comes out, I hope that there will be online talking, private racing, and "players met" for the playstation network. I have 2 accounts and my gamer ID's are XxStanTheManxX & VWBadrazzVW. Look forward to anyone that wants to race in GT5P.

I'm perfectly fine with the online mode, to be perfectly honest, it's a lot more bearable than most other online games, but this may be because of the lack of voice chat or text chat - the main downfall of most online games.
Rammers, punters, general online arseholes. We aren't going to get rid of them, no matter how many penalties, restrictions or any other barriers we erect. The only way to completely get rid of them is private rooms and forum-organised races.

Personally, I'd rather online modes be free to harsh penalties, simply because they punish the innocent far more than the guilty and they never ever get entirely rid of the problem.

I think the system for contact needs to be something like, if you contact a car and within 3 seconds if that car has 3 or 4 wheels off the track, then YOU get penalized X seconds.

Thats a good idea:tup:

But what if it's a completely accidental, unintentional tap, and the other driver barely touches the wall or goes off the track on his own? Then it's an unfair penalty, but since the game's coding can't tell what a person's intentions are, it assigns the penalty anyway.

I agree with Ardius. Penalties will never make the problem drivers obey the rules, and they punish the innocent more than the guilty. There should still be shortcut penalties for blatant off-roading, like cutting through the pit lane on Daytona or lawn-mowing through the esses at Suzuka. But very minor shortcuts or mistakes should not, in my opinion, deserve a race-killing penalty.

I don't know about you, but i always races suzuka 750, and almost every single time I've been put off the track has been very obviously intentional, or it was my own fault for trying to take some corner 2-wide.

The only case I could come up with where this system would be a real problem is lap 1, turn 1. When there's a huge pile up and and I hit joe, and joe hits sam, and sam hits greg, then greg and sam fly off the map and not only is sam penalized for contact but also by being in the sand...all due to me.

But again, that's pretty rare. This system is best, simple way, that I could think of fixing anything; and I bet people would be less likely to try and push you off if they knew they would get a 5 second penalty also.

Well by the time they get round to sorting the penalty system out we will have private rooms so punters get booted.

I agree with you that most punts are intentional. But these people would hit you anyway, because it's what they've done all along. In turn 1 at Suzuka or Fuji, believe me: being nailed 100 feet into the sand and having to crawl back on to the track at 10 mph is a lot worse than having no acceleration for 5 seconds. Getting a penalty slows you down, but struggling to get out of the kitty litter after a vicious punt is much more of a race-killer.

Won't private rooms only benefit those with lots of online friends? Being very new to the PS3 world I don't have online friends and my real friends aren't that interested in gaming. I guess that means that i'll just have to race against idiots and kids. :grumpy:

Now is the time, when you are racing and you catch a good clean racer, send a friend request. We have all started at the bottom and worked up, so can you. When I started I only had 2 friends ( real life friends who are gamers ) on the list, now my friends list is up to over 20.If you prove yourself as a clean racer, you will also get requests to be added to others lists, hang in there dude, seek and ye shall find. You can add me as a starter 👍

I have the best car for that.. haha

I think there has to be a way for the system to recognise bad drivers, kinda like how we have em in real life, with demerit points and such.

Even in real racing, under most conditions, the punter is always the one at fault, especially from behind , regardless of it being intentional or not. Most unintentional ones have always been a result of either over-speeding or being too ambitious with the racing lines (trying to achieve the impossible). Clearly we also need to be able to differentiate a nudge from punt as well. Nudging in real racing is sometimes necessary.

Perhaps we can have a system they use in F1, where if the driver is deemed to have broken a rule, he gets a no argument, pit stop penalty. That means regardless of it being intentional or not, the driver that punts from behind is forced to make a pit stop. Now he may have been able to climb up the place during the lap before / after the 'incident', but forcing him to stop at the pits will reset the status back to original.

This will really FORCE them to avoid contact at all times.

Just my two cents.

and what about the people who slam on their brakes when you're drafting them?

I thought about that and that is why I always draft till a distance it becomes too dangerous to do so a.k.a sudden break by the guy in front. I think while alot of us keep pointing the finger at other drivers, we too also have a part to ensure we do what we can to minimize the accident rate from sky rocketing.

Let's not forget lag will play a factor in this too.

I myself don't have PS3 nor GT5P yet, but I'm not only worried but greatly disturbed by the fact that judging from the increasing amount of complaints about the online mode, it's completely horrid experience. Rear-ending, crashing into others, taking shortcuts etc despite the penalty system.. it's destruction derby out there!

Please, Polyphony Digital: Come up with penalty system that actually gathers up driver data about penalties, sums them up in their profile and places him/her into race where others are like him/her, leaving the clean racers to have their own higher quality races and thus improving the quality of the experience. Some people whom I know have tried the GT5P online, and they were very disappointed at the utter lack of order on the track.

Valid questions about the racing but when you start your post with those first 8 words you really cant be taken seriously. PD is not likely to pay any attention to someone not supporting their product and is basing their statements on hearsay and what they read on a forum.

If you would really like PD to listen, then show some support and buy their product first. :)

I have to say that Toca 3's penalty system, along w/ damage works very well in promoting clean racing. I also like the fact that they even give you a warning!

The risk of getting black flags, timed & drive-through penalties, and damage should be effective enough for online (and offline) use in GT5.

There is a way.

Just copy NASCAR 2003 online

NASCAR 2003 has a system called "LPI" or, Laps Per Incident.

Everytime you spin off track or crash you get an "incident"

The game calculates how many laps you have run online and how many incidents you have and gives you a LPI number.

So if you crashed 5 times in 100 laps your LP would be 20, or 20 laps per incident.

NASCAR 2003 had rooms with LPI restrictions. Some servers had a limit of 30 LPI. Others 20 and so on.

Drivers prided themselves on having a good LPI. At one time I almost got to 200 LPI

Now you may say this is impossible to implement in GT5P because drivers will brake check you and run you off the road.

Well, that was the same case in NASCAR 2003. Before you could race in the servers with the clean drivers and high LPI limits you had to tip toe around the open servers until you build your LPI high enough, and, I almost forgot, your rating.

The stats that were kept in NASCAR 2003 did not include number of wins. That was smart because including number of wins would make drivers even more desperate and more willing to do stupid things to win.

The only stats were

Rating
Points scored for your rating in the last 10 races
# of Races Run
# of Races completed
# of laps attempted
# of laps completed
LPI

There is complicated rules behind how you raise your rating, from 0 to 10. But servers also put restrictions on LPI AND rating.

So LPI and a rating stat would help keep the clean, good drivers together.

Some bad drivers will still slip through the cracks, but that's inevitable.

Oh I like this system you just mentioned.
It's very good in weeding out the casual to serious racers.

someone take all the Ideas that are here, and place them on first page. :) That way I wont mention something because somone before me said it ;)

But we should STORM the PD offices and DEMAND our Good online play.
*I'm having feeling this would turn out to be like a 300 movie*

Online can be a nightmare. The a couple of suggestions that could improve things.

1, Online Scores and rankings/leadboards to give you feedback to who you are racing and the computer could automatically match people with similar ratings. Also online can seem a little uninspiring when all you do is win an anonymous trophy and some cash. Having records/leadboards etc gives you a good reason for trying to improve and work your way up, something similar to the lap time boards would be a start.

2, More Laps, than the rubbish drivers will get found out.

3, NO QUITTING FOR THE HOST. Only way to quit is to turn your PS3 off. Which would be a hassle so they probably would not do it.

4, More racers with 6/8 being maximum. Less cars is usually less hassle.

5, Anyone hits someone from behind they get a penalty even if it is an accident.
Like insurance firms, if you rear end someone its your fault, no questions. It would make everyone be more cautious and that not a bad thing.:)

That LPI system really sounds fun. Hope they figure something like that to GT5 too!

Couple months ago when I was thinking this penalty problem in GT5P, I was wondering, how about that ramming, bumbing, etc etc, only effects the ramming driver? I know its not simulating real racing, but this would make ramming unnecessary. If you hit the guy front of you, you crash and get penalty, but the other driver dont even notice that. That would make brake checkin worse too, cause you dont get more speed then.

We only need damage, performanse vise, and private lobby, and all the problems will be solved, including possibility to ban reckless drivers from servers.

Greycap didn't start this thread, but sure why not. Post the incident of one guy driving and have that represent how the expeirence will be for everyone else.
You can't take one indicent and say that's what online is all about.

I can provide evidence of online racing where you just take your time you can avoid it.

If the stove is hot, why put your hand on it?
If there are idiots driving in the game, why drive near them?

Couldn't agree with you more mate.
