Define 'Cruise'

So what does 'Cruise' mean to you? As when you see 'cruise' in a lobby?

To me it means not competitively racing, not touge-ing, not stalking other drivers, not drifting, not dragging, and not driving like a grandma obeying traffic laws either.

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but Cruise (to me, at least) means an open road where you simply drive at a lively pace pushing the car and respecting other drivers whether they are faster or slower than yourself. Think of it as sort of a controlled chaos where everyone can share the road going one (and the correct) direction doing what they want undisturbed.
 
I've never joined any of those lobbies but to me it's everyone driving at a set speed to show off how good their car looks.

I think it's usually driving around like a grandma. It's for people who think other people want to look at their car, they all go on track and never realize nobody is looking, because they're all trying so hard to show off.

I'd say that's contrary to the widely accepted definition of a 'cruise'. I think it's about driving at a casual pace, enjoying the car and it's surroundings. I can understand why in a video game that would seem to take the form of driving at a fairly quick pace, but for most gamers and lobby owners it's usually about strict adherence to real road laws.

What you're looking for is a lobby with 'track day' in the title.

I think it's more about trying to simulate real life driving than trying to show off.

Did anyone see Clarkson's Top Gear review of that freaky looking Alfa Romeo Disco Volante? He said something like "it wants to be driven at half speed" - not slow, not pushing the boundaries of the car - spirited driving. Gives you a chance to admire more than just the car's limits. In a game that looks so pretty, I very much enjoy cruising, whatever one's perception of its meaning.
 
Well I have no idea what people in the game may refer to it as. I never saw any point to it in game at all but to each his own. In real life it usually means just a nice leisurely drive, windows down, tunes pumping and so on. More common among teens and those in their early 20s.

When you drive at a lively pace and push the car you are doing the opposite of cruising. Like SCER said, what you described sounds more like a Track Day.

I think to "cruise" (and enjoy doing it) in the game you'd need a wheel and use the clutch and shifter, then simply drive as you would do in real life, not necessarily at a steady pace like you'd obey a speed limit but as like not flooring all the time and shift up early etc. those kind of things. Like you had a nice old car you enjoy driving, but you wouldn't push it all the time because you'd rather be able to still drive your "baby" for the next 20 years without having to restore it completely after every 5.000 miles. And that kind of driving a car can be fun in the game. Then again that's actually just "driving" rather than "cruising"?

The real meaning of "cruise" I know from lowriding, where they drive extremely slow. That is to show off the car. There are lots of spectators or at least potential spectators on nights-out at a Boulevard. But re-creating it in a game like this doesn't seem to make much sense IMO.
 
avoiding getting rammed by the X2010 kids.

while driving at a leisurely pace on one side of the road, depending on nationality of the room owner.

In the game, it's just driving without actual racing, there can be competition but it's optional and doesn't involve everyone in the lobby.

I don't consider driving around a race course really slowly anything like real life, personally.
There are also cruise and show rooms, and/or rooms with "show" in the name.

It's like walking around showing off your guns and not shooting in CoD. :lol:
 
I like to think of it like a sunday drive , pick your best looking car (it also has to handle well, obviously) take it to your favorite track and drive at a reasonable pace. I agree that for some, it's more of a car show than anything but not for me :D

Cruising is basically free driving. You can pick your favourite car and your favourite tyres and just drive.

This, I used to cruise back in the GT5 days, when hybrids were popular. Met many nice people, and we could share our cars, drive in pack, enjoy the chats, some role play, cops chasing road racers, just good fun without any drama. Some times we moved to SSRX or La Sarthe, and have drag races, where I can put my replica hybrids to the test, the Devil Z, Saleen S7 TT or AMS Alpha 9 were some of my cars. I also took requests and build cars for fellow cruiser, cop cars, replicas, track monsters etc.

I had built 600HP Taurus SHO cop car, it was a riot :lol:

Those were the day's were i really enjoyed playing GT online. I owned the game since Christmas 2010 but couldn't update and play online because of we had a much slower internet than what you might think until August - September 2012 where we upgraded our internet package but i didn't play GT5 online until march 2013!! so i'm late to the party (I played online when i was on the update 2.09) but still at least there were a lot of hybrids at that time.

I had much more fun back then compare to GT6.

Of course there are some wacky hybrids like the honda Civic (you know what i mean) and ridiculously high lifted fiat 500 with the wheels outside of the car.

I still have a replay of it.

I remember that time, too - made so many friends, had a great time checking out each other's cars, sat around chatting via keyboard about tuning, etc, and sometimes we would all line up and cruise together around the Ring. If someone had a spin or went off track we would hold up for them. Many drivers learned the Ring this way - we would travel in a tight, fast pack - it was a blast.
Those were the days.
The game seems to have lost most of the 'fun' players - more or less nothing but the cynics, whiners, and 'serious' cats left.
Still - good to know that there are still some gamers out there unashamed to game.

It's a shame PD disabled hybrids on latest version of GT5 and GT6 :( In GT6, one would need jail broken PS3 ( CFW ) to build hybrids, no more great replicas for me.

In GT5, I mainly build replicas via hybrids and share them ( no sharing in GT6 :( ), one of my shared build was Boost Logic Supra MK IV, pumping 1500+HP ( like the real car ), replicated down to 10000RPM engine, the acceleration and top speed stats. It was magic to drive it for rolling drags at SSR7 or SSRX, makes Veyron owner cries :D

Then came the Devil Z, L28 transplant, twin turbo swap, 600-800+HP, wangan/highway king, I won a race against similar power cars on SS tire while I was on CS tires at SSR7 :D, some lucky GTPers here got the car as well when I shared it, and they called it a wild monster :p

Doing rolling drags were some of the best moments in GT5, when I brought my AMS Alpha Omega, everything went nuts :lol:, the car was phenomenal from 40mph to 220+mph ( like on a jet plane ), but also take corners like a GTR would. Pulling my car next to usual highway racers, then I said I'm on AMS Alpha Omega, they usually just laugh ( they were on 1000+HP cars too ), but I just said, let's find out ... 3rd gear pull from 60mph to top speed in the tunnel .... and their jaws dropped :D

Back then, I can custom built almost anything ( any spec of suspension - special track build, turbo - custom boost, engine - raise RPM to 11K, etc ), tailor a replica of a tuner car for example down to almost every details. Pit Road M Mitsubishi GTO and Shutokou R30 RS Turbo Skyline was some of my first build.

The greatest of all, cruise room allowed me to share my build and discuss it too, or simply take them on the road and enjoy together in packs or race/drag it :D When I race, we just do shutokou battle style, catch up or get away, lap after lap at La Sarthe or SSR7 was fun.

It would be nice if the game would just allow engine building. :/

You're probably right, although that won't stop 'cruising' rooms from being used for all of the last four options as well as any other niche activities the GT community come up with.
 
And then there are the genuine cruise lobbies with a defined speed limit that everyone may stick to but not everyone will be able to sustain unless they're on RS with SRF enabled.
 
Cruise lobbies are those wherein people don't usually drive at full speed. Some of them just literally cruise around a huge track, like Nordschleife or Sierra. Most of them have an imposed speed limit by the host and are indicated either keep left or keep right, but some cruise lobbies don't have rules; the host just wants everyone to respect one another. Something random US lobbies lack in general.

I seldom go into these lobbies, but I prefer Track Day lobbies, because I like driving my cars around at full speed.
 
My favorite cruising lobbies are the "2 way traffic" lobbies on Sierra.

I like taking stock cars, or moderately/realisticly tuned cars, and taking them for a "spirited drive" while still obaying most traffic laws.

I watch my speed in the higher traffic areas, but on the open road, I push the pace. I try to hold my lane at all times, only crossing over the center line when I can see the road ahead (like how we do in the mountains :) ).

It's fun going for burns like this with 1 or 2 other friends...overtaking where realistically safe, passing traffic etc. I dream of the days when we can have many more people in a room, with a huge variety of people cruising at different speeds, just like a real road!

Here's a question someone here might me able to answer!

What is "Cops & Robbers", or some form of cruise room with Cops??

I think I get the basic concept...everyone cruises, following road rules, one or two people cruise as Cops, and hand out tickets to those who brake laws.

One time, I joined a Cops room that was actually a lot of fun. It was at La Sarthe. Two guys in black cars were the cops, cruised around and handed out tickets for speeding, wreckless driving, drifting, loitering, excessive camber (I laughed so hard at that one haha...guy was pissed!). If you got 3 tickets in one car, you had to switch cars. If you could get out of LoS of the Cop cars, you "got away", but if you ran and they caught you, that car was finished for the session.

Everyone was on the same page, being respectful of one another, and it was a lot of fun. Every other time I've joined a C&R room, it's a bunch of people in Pagani's on RS just doing...nothing really...

Also thought I'd add...a nice way to sum up what cruising is to me, is it's a time to do a little roll playing within GT6. It takes some imagination, but there's a lot of fun to be had if people cooperate.
