Still, it's not all sunshine and flowers. I wish I got to properly say goodbye to the cats, and I even promised Ben Ben extra treats the day I left, and I never got to fulfil that promise. Even though I didn't do it out of expectation of reciprocation, I'm still nonetheless deeply hurt by the fact that none of the other volunteers reached out to me to ask if I'm okay, when I reached out to someone else that got "fired" like me prior. But most of all perhaps is the fact that, throughout every phase of my life, I've been met with either people clearly not right in the head, or just people hostile towards me for no reason I can discern. Having met with yet another person clearly not right in the head at this volunteer gig has really discouraged me from wanting to put myself out there again. Again, this is not something I can really explain at all, but I just get this feeling that so, so many people in society are down with some sort of illness of the mind that's too common to fit into a DSM, and it's something that feels manufacturered and baked into our lifestyles and expectations. I know I did my best. I know I did good work. I know I wasn't causing problems for anyone. I know I was amicible. And yet, I'm "fired" anyway, with nothing to show for it. There'll forever be a part of me that begrudges the fact that I'm the one on medications to adjust to this sick world, and not the other way around. I'll admit it's an arrogance I've had for a very long time now, and I don't super know where it came from. I just "know" I'm in the right. I "know" I'm the only sane person in a room full of insane people. But if I'm the only sane person in the room, then does that make me the sane one, or the insane one?
What were the circumstances of you leaving? How come you are saying you were "fired"?

I don't know if I can technically be fired from a volunteer job where I never signed anything or even went for an interview. Just semantics; I'm a bit pedantic like that.

As for the circumstances of me leaving... it's a bit of a mess. TL;DR is that the owner was being an unreasonable POS and I've suffered and seen enough abuse from her to just walk out. I wasn't trained adequately to do the job I'm tasked with (i.e. clean litterboxes, mop the floors), and I was declined when I asked the owner for a QC on my first day. I kept doing my thing for a few weeks after, with no complaints from anyone. Then, one day, while the owner was admonishing another volunteer for doing my work, she saw me sitting on a sofa spending quality time with cats (which, according to her, was also an important part of the job). That, coupled with how I unwittingly left a wet used cloth on a basket of clean laundry, thinking it was for dirty laundry, made her turn her anger towards me. She asked out loud, "in what universe would this be a basket for dirty laundry?!", and that's just one of many examples of her abusive speech I've experienced for myself and seen for others. She asked me what I had been doing for the past 1.5 hours if someone else had already did half my work for me. I answered truthfully: I was cleaning litterboxes. She then went on a rant about how cleaning litterboxes should only take 20 mins. Like, hello? I wasn't super trained in the task, and she even declined to QC my first works. How would I know her expected timeline or cleanliness?

My fuse just snapped and I got into a heated argument with her, ultimately walking out. I had been thinking of quitting for the past few weeks, anyway, given her behaviour, speech, complete lack of empathy and appreciation for her volunteers. I'm no psychologist, but there's no convincing me that this woman isn't a psycho. I suppose part of it is on me for not checking the Google Reviews of the place before volunteering; half the reviews there are ex–volunteers and even paying patrons criticising her conduct. She even goes on unprofessional rants against negative reviews. I just thought all cats deserve love, and that a place run by volunteers out of love for stray cats would be "easy mode", filled with kind and compassionate people. I had wanted to try stepping out of my hermit shell for the first time in a long while, and needless to say, this experience has been most discouraging for me. It just feels like people in general are just so, so sick without even realising it, and that sickness has become so common it's just the norm.

I miss the cats. I had a good cry on the way home. Wrote about it later. I think I'm over it now, but I think I'll be a hermit for a few more years at least.

Screw her.

Are there any other cat shelters/opportunities to volunteer with cats nearby?

Don't let this get you to give up on getting out there. It's a crappy setback....but try to see it as a learning experience.

I've been 100% depression free for 8 years now. Found out my own personal root cause and managed to address it. This will NOT work for everybody, not even most people, so please bear that in mind.

I had SAD, aka Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it was quite severe. I got rid of all the symptoms by simply NOT putting my clocks back in the autumn/fall. I stay on BST all year round and keep to the same routine regarding getting up, eating, and bedtime, etc. It got better and better over the course of three years, and now I have no symptoms at all and feel the same in the winter as I do in the summer.

To those still suffering: I know them feels. Hang on in there. Maybe you will find a solution that works for you, just like I did. It really CAN happen. Wishing you all well.

Autonomy and control can do wonders for some. Glad you found yourself a fix and great job working toward a fix while in it. Like you say, may not help many, but the moral of the story stays true.

I was up at 4am sobbing in the bathroom. Today's my birthday. Only in the past few months have I even been capable of crying. It always bothers me that I almost never do even when I feel really low.

It's not even aging that's bothering me. I haven't felt good on my birthday for the past three years. I always want to have a nice day but then something turns me sour and I don't enjoy it. I guess I had an early start this year. I haven't moved forward in my life in nearly ten years and it just feels like I'm never going to get anywhere.

On the other hand, I did have a recent appointment with a psychiatrist to get on medication to try and help. I was hoping she'd have sent the prescription to fill by now but I'll have to be patient.

I have some hope left. It's hard to be hopeful when so many of my issues seem to be permanent effects of my childhood medical history. We'll see what happens.

That’s the start. I’ve been where you are at points. Typically my birthdays have been led with a bit of numbness or indifference, but I still try to enjoy it with a dinner cooked for myself.

The “Never going to get anywhere” is exactly how I’ve felt at points. I had an abnormally traumatic and stressful upbringing (for U.S. standards) that, while I drowned it in enjoyment and comfort, I realized I was dissociating and not engaging in life, even in my late teens and early twenties - I was seriously ****ing up, not understanding the gravity of where I came from.

Try to enjoy another day, another year for yourself! Easier said than done, of course. My birthday comes up next week, so I’ll be fighting against those feelings.

Speaking of that, I remember on my 29th birthday in 2020, my grandparents were starting drama with us and not even giving us any emotional support about our situation. My grandma was accusing us of using her card to order an Apple computer. We have always used Dell laptops, we have never owned Apple products. An hour later, I had to listen to some peaceful music for 2 hours to help calm me down. Won't ever forget it. We try to minimize contact as much as possible now. They're supposed to discharge my grandpa the second week in August. My grandma has been staying at my aunt's house since June 2nd while my grandpa has been at the facility.

Crying/emotional outbursts can be incredibly cathartic, and can lead to progression in life.

About the prescription - if they are antidepressants remember they aren't "miracle pills", and some can actually make you feel worse in the first few weeks. Always check in with the medics/pharmacists if you get the crappy side effects.

EDIT: I realise that last sentence sounds so AI-like. I wish there was a more "human" way of talking about stuff like that (there probably is - my language skills aren't exactly top tier!).

It didn't sound like AI to me. I appreciate the thought.

This medication is usually well tolerated and typically has fewer of the more annoying side effects of other meds I've been on. I'm willing to deal with some side effects if I see improvement in the areas I need help with. The big question is whether I'll end up with more energy, or less. It's possible I'll feel groggier for the first few weeks, but this med is specifically supposed to be a little brighter and less emotionally-numbing than others, so I'm hopeful.

It's that time of the year again for me...

Some things have been better so far but I still feel exhausted

I'm too totally depressed, although the all 💊 I have for my diagnosis.

And now I've got digestive inflammation.

Yeah, I know the feeling there. Me and my mom are exhausted after running errands in town. It's a monumental task now to get ready, takes us an hour or 2. See we have to pack food and water for our mini trips too. I hope things go well for you, looking forward to 2027.

I am in weird spot. I am not depressed, but in a total mess since yesterday. I am having feelings of desperation, despair. Had some news that rocked me yesterday, and I can't get it out of my head, and I don't know how to move forward. I just can't stop thinking about it no matter how hard I try. I couldn't sleep much and every time I woke it was the first thing I thought of immediately. I've only told one person (he suggested drugs but that's a no) the details as I don't confide with people and don't want to go over it as it makes my react nervous when I think about it. I've been doing the housework and other stuff to take my mind off it but stop a few mins in as my mind starts thinking about it so need to find something else to do. I can't even eat, or do anything I enjoy. This situation likely isn't going to get better for a long while either but worse. Im not expecting answers but I just need to let it out as it's impossible to talk to my family or friends about about certain things and bad experiences prevent me from doing it.

This sounds like a job for a professional or, if you're religious, someone in that community. It seems there's a real urgency too and that can cloud so much in life and make you feel trapped/hopeless even if it "only" takes a fresh set of eyes to give some perspective.

Can always share online but it's not without risk.

I think I'm feeling burnout, it feels so heavy just to get by everyday. I don't feel depressed or sad (at least not currently) but damn, it's exhausting. I know I will end up feeling guilty for being burnout everyday when I see everyone else around me still walking around like usual.

I've googled about this and turns out people are also experiencing Q4 burnout every year?

After quite a long time, it took me a long time to realize that my relationship with my former girlfriend can no longer be salvaged.

I was told by a few friends recently that she had actually cheated on me as far back as two years ago, and it felt like years of planning revenge and retribution, all in the name of her getting back together with me hasn't gotten me anywhere.

I also realized this as I apologized to someone for a joke that I made in poor taste towards that person, and later remembered that my former girlfriend would never do the same after all these years.

(For reference, how this all started was that she said a joke relating to a male K-pop idol, such as giving a guy a fake name, made-up fake stories, as if to demote me to "just a friend" in favor of the guy, and even suggested I go "third wheeling" with her and the guy, which angered me.)

To me, it feels like walking in a ravaged, war-torn city, but there's no more fighting and violence, but the aftermath still stands.

I ended up making the hardest and scariest decision of my life that it was time to let this go. All photos of her that I have, and all messages, even her number, were deleted.

I sometimes even cry myself to sleep in fear that I may eventually end up loved by another woman (and never her ever again), and that she may eventually get engaged to and marry the man who she cheated on me with, further reinforcing my former girlfriend's depravity and lack of remorse.

But I guess now I just have to focus on of course, racing games, and one day, pursuing being a film director (I graduated from film school in 2023, and have been looking to find ways to actually jumpstart my career such as volunteering on sets and one day, learning acting as well).
