Desperate to improve my driving skills

Lots of good advice here. You really will want to get in a decent powered car with some good tyres and run a few laps with aids on. See what time you get, you need to stay consistent then turn the aids off and see what times you get. You should start to notice little things you can fix to shave seconds off your times.

I need to spend some serious time on the Nurburg Ring in practice mode. I still can't do a full lap without making a few serious mistakes :(

Turn assists off except ABS 1 and drive in slow motion. Move the steering wheel, throttle, and brakes in slow motion (unless it is necessary not to do so). When approaching corners make sure your eyes are looking at the inside of the corner, this will greatly help you in adjusting your speed/braking and steering angle. As your confidence build, you will need to adjust your driving to fit the car/track and any particular circumstances/conditions.

Many pieces of contructive and concrete advice, thanks! I'll treasure all these resoures. Here, one more question: What's the meaning of "feather" the gas pedal? I want to know the "gas bar level" - One-eighth of throttle or the "gas bar level" is as thin as feather?

Me too. I could complete a clean lap but only in a practice mode. If I am in a competition, I can surely expect the IA cars will hit my bottom and then my car willl sway into the grassland or collide into railings. What can I do at Nurburgring?

Is GT5 enjoyable using only the DS3 controller? I've passed every GT with only a pad, but it seems GT5 requires precision driving skills.

2 days ago I barely got Bronze on the Intermediate Top Gear Challenge racing with the Elise, the car moves way too much when applying throttle to the corners, I don't recall having that difficulty on previous GT installments.

Also, I'm not the fastest racer (only level 15) but I use everything I have, if you are afraid of getting rear-ended, look at your rear view mirror, check there are no cars really close to you. If there are, move away from the driving line, if they overtake, don't worry about it, jusk make sure you are close to them on a straight, you will overtake them back.

Feathering uses how far you are pressing the accelerator (gas), if you look at the bar to the right of the fuel one, when you press the brake, one will go red and if you hit the gas, the other one goes grey. Feathering is how far you have it, not completely pushed but maybe half-way.

Feathering the throttle means continuously modulating the amount of throttle you are using to manipulate the car's behavior. There is no set amount of throttle to use at a particular point in a corner. It is something that will almost always be dynamic as you change cars.

Get yourself a Lotus 11r and keep driving it until you have mastered the control that's needed to get consistent lap times and not fall off the track.

Will be a challenge at first but once you balance it round corners and manage throttle control and bliping to keep the car balanced but still maintain good pace, all over cars will become much easier.:)

To get better, understand the real physics behind driving. Keep at it, you'll get better. Andretti wasn't winning first the first days out.

To the OP: you should check out this book; it's called Speed Secrets by Bentley Ross. It's a book on improving your real world driving techniques but can also be used for the game.

I even learned my girl to play GT in a way she can beat some of my friends. I think the technique here is to take a fast FR car but drive it slowly, so slow it'll be easy for you to control. Then try to go just a little bit faster every lap from there and gradually find out about the limits of that certain car.

The problem I usually see with people not being able to control a car is that they want to go way too fast. Slow down, and you'll actually get better lap times. Trust me!

Go through the license tests, and go for for gold medals. You can't get gold medals on those without learning proper driving technique... They are an excellent learning tool.

Driving/Racing is like Martial Arts; You're never done learning, and your always working on the basics!

Those license tests are an excellent lesson on the basics of fast driving.

I am new here but been lurking for a bit. I'm desperate as well I need serious help I have turned off everything except Abs. Yet I can't get gold on license tests. I've tried everything. I don't play on manual and I find manual to be extremely hard for me. Any advice? I really want to learn how to be faster

One thing I have noticed that will help you with the throttle is to drive a bit with the traction control set at 5 and watch the throttle bar when you give it the gas. You will notice it turn red at times which indicates you are to heavy on the throttle and the traction control is surpressing it. with a little practice you can keep the red to a minimum while still winning races without spinning out and after a while you can turn off the TCS on most cars.

I hope this post is not duplicate with another one. But, many gt fans must want to know, especially newbies like me.

Step 1: Buy a book.
Step 2: Read it.

Soliciting "driving" or "racing" advice on a gaming forum might not be the best way to do it. Cause frankly I am 99.99999% certain that none of us here invented "Racing" and certainly not "Racing Techniques".

Some will give you advice from legit sources, some will give you advice that they've read from a post on a random forum posted by a guy who heard about it from his cousin's second wife's brother who eats nothing but pancakes.

Skippys "going faster" is a good start, for vehicle dynamics try RCVD by Milliken Research, for visual skills I like Keith codes "twist of the wrist" series.

Enjoy!

P.S. I like pancakes!

The amount of tire screech and balance with the apex is the perfect amount of throttle needed.
1)break at straight only (-but not a full stop) then proceed with a little or a lot amount of throttle depending on the corners angle.
2) keep the balance b/w your foot and gas pedal, if you act stupid and floor the pedal you're gonna end up under-steering, so keep it at a balanced amount. :)
3) always practice and what i call "in then out" you find that perfect driving line. the line has to be fluid yet quick (it's better to hear a screeching noise from your tires as soon as you enter a corner till the end of the corner, it means you're pushing it to it's amazing limit) if you need anything else, feel free to ask :)

Starting from TCS: 5 and ABS:1 with other aids off, I've tried to gain consistency for every lap(in a competition) I went. If same lap time on end was obtained, then decrease the TCS by 1. Now, I drive with TCS: 1 and I found that, in this way, I could eliminate bad driving habits. This method best suits me. I am a bit satisfied and the feeling is like being on the way of taming a beast. Thanks for all help from you all and your very constructive and insightful advice!

as somebody else mentioned before, very good way to learn different techniques is doing the licenses. watch the demo movie (where nice speaker will explain the route and how you should drive), watch how AI drives, then try yourself.
im trying to get all gold's in B (which should be easy, but my skill is not so great ;) ) and with every try i learn new things about corners, speed, breaking and how to drive using my g27.

This is the post to notice. Yes a lot of practice and testing and experience all count for a lot but if I have to say which single thing effected my abilities above all others, it was the day (on GT3) that I decided that I had to gold every license and stopped doing anything else on my PS2 until I had reached that goal.

The difference it made to my driving was huge. Not only having to drive well, but drive fast and well around the mobile chicanes called AI cars.

Ok, GT5 licences are the poorest yet, some too easy, and not enough variety, but golding them will help you enormously.

eg if you gold IC-10 you will learn Rome inside out, including all the different racing lines and how to handle a car with more power than grip. After that the Gallardo race became a cruise with the stock car and some new tyres.

Thanks for the advice of obtaining all gold licences. This is my next target after mastering the car with no TCS. Very challenging and satisfying game. GT5 is the best racing game. Awesome!

Try the link in my sig. It was written for an old driving sim called Grand Prix Legends but most of its points are still relevant to driving sims today.

Grand Prix Lengends, wow a blast from the past. If you could drive any of those 1967 F1's beasts you could drive any car.

wish GT5 had at least on of them in the game.

that was a proper sim.

whats the best way to brake??

I was trying to do the last of the International B license (The one with the Lambo) and on the straight as soon as I broke I skidded out, so I had to put the ASM on to complete it!

How can you brake without Skidding out??

You mean the tires lock and the car pushes out or that the tires lock and the car spins out?
