DFGT - Paddles or Sequential?

Really considering getting an entry level wheel. For those DFGT users - do you use the paddle "buttons" or the sequential shifter?

If you use the sequential shifter do you drive with one hand all the time or do you have to flick your hand off the wheel and tap it real quick so as not to lose control?

Thanks

I use the paddle shifters for gearing, and the shifter as reverse. If you ever get spun out, you're going to need a quick way to get back in the race.

I haven't popped the wheel out for GT5 yet, but in other games I've used either, based on the car. So if a car has flappy paddles, I'll use them, but if a car has a stick, I'd use the stick.

I'l also sometimes just tap the stick, other times hold my hand on it. There's no need to choose between these "styles".

Also, sometimes I mix and mash and use both the paddles and the stick. In really tough races I sometimes revert to the paddles, because they are easier to use, even though the car is supposed to drive stick.

I try to use whatever the car has in real life so I just use the sequential the majority of the time. It's not really a problem trying to shift with it as you can tap it easily, because the stick is so close to the wheel. The buttons are if anything slightly trickier. For example on a tight trick like Eiger it's hard to hit them as they are attached to the wheel and you're moving it the majority of the time. The DFGT is a great wheel for the money though and makes the game so much better, you will not regret it.

I don't quite get what you mean by "shifter as reverse"?

I prefer the stick myself, it's easier to push it forwards and backwards than it is to push the paddle buttons. You need to press them pretty hard, and I feel the gearing feels quite unresponsive because of that.

I have the sequential shifter set for 'up' and 'down' to both go into 'reverse vehicle'. No matter how many times I spin out, I always forget where the reverse button is. Hold the shifter until you are realigned, shift up and drive off.

I use the shifter for gears. Reverse is harder to get to, but I find this way of playing more enjoyable.

I use the paddles for gears and the shifter for reverse and hand brake.

I have a quick question about gears but does not warrant a thread of its own. If you have a six speed H shifter how do you cope with cars that have 7 gears? I have wondered this for a while.

I don't think cars with that many gears down have manual gearboxes so use use sequential gears instead.

Don't know of any car that has a true manual transmission that has more than 6.

Anything higher than 6 is a Sequential.

G25 user here and I try to use the shifting method the car uses. For example I bought a Z06 very early in the game and raced it for awhile stock and used the H-Shifter/Clutch.
But when it is race converted it uses a Sequential so I flip the H-Gate to Sequential.

cheers for the reply

owning a DFGT and not really doing any research on other wheels, i did not realise you could switch between H shifter and sequential on the G27. do all other wheels that include an H shifter have this function?

I use the shifter and paddles on standard/premium cars depending on speed but on the FGT and the X2010 I use the paddles as the shifting is so quick and also the cars can be quite lively.

At G25 and fanatec wheels you can indeed use both H-gate and sequential. Just press triangle before the race..

You don't ever press triangle before the race in GT5. Just pressing the clutch activates it while using an H-shifter.

And to switch back to sequential, tap one of the paddles or switch it into sequential mode an flick the stick.

Pressing triangle was a GT5 Prologue only thing.

Have you tried up for reverse and down for ebrake? This seems like it would be even better for me and give you the missing ebrake function in GT.

Paddle shifting on the DFGT would be a lot easier if there were an option to reduce the wheel rotation (like it already is for F1 and karts). The minute you have to move your hands, there goes your shifting up or down if you have re-tasked the shifter to brake and reverse.

I have no idea why, of all the tuning options, a COMPLETE lack of steering geometry parameters has been included in the 'Ultimate' driving simulator...

Me too. You're much more likely to need reverse or handbrake when you have a lot of lock on than gearshifts. I've never had a problem with being able to hit the paddles to shift when I need to, but I don't drift or change gear in the middle of hairpin bends. I do sometimes spin out or drift wide in a tight hairpin though.

I use the buttons probably 99% of the time, the only time I use the sequential shifter is if I'm on the phone and driving with only my right hand. Button for upshift and shifter for downshift. It really works well as they are so close together especially for slow cars like the Miata in the 4 hour roadster event.

This.

I use the paddles for gears and the shifter for reverse and hand brake.
That is actually an interesting idea...
Problem is, for normal road cars, I prefer using the sequential shifter and road cars (especially FF) are exactly the cars where you'd want to use the handbrake more.

Decisions, decisions...

I always use the buttons / paddles, if you take your hand off the wheel all the time to use the shifter you will not have full control and the feedback will mess you up. I use the shifter on Dirt 2 and often use both the shifter and paddles in the same race becuase with the frantic turning of the wheel in Dirt the paddles are often hard to find

Former Golf mk V GTi DSG owner and DFGT owner...

I find that I use the DFGT in almost exactly the same was as I used the Golf paddles / sequential stick IRL.

Paddles almost always - but occasional reach for the stick in very twisting conditions where you have got out of sync with where your hands / wheel / paddles are...

I use the shifter the overwhelming majority of the time, but I occasionally use the paddles if the situation calls for it.

It depends on the car. If the car I'm driving has a traditional manual transmission, I use the gear stick. I take my right hand off the wheel and hit the shifter. If the car I'm driving has paddle shifters like the SLS and GT-R, I use the paddles.
