The source of the problem turned out to be an issue with part of the software that runs the news blog (specifically, the bit that generates the "related posts" you see underneath each blog post). It increased the load on the server by more than 50 times normal levels when the two most recent posts were published, which is what made it so slow. Unfortunately, it was extremely difficult to determine this was the source of the problem.

Quick repair as always. It might just be me but it seems that GTP and FP are running even faster than ever. Which didnt seem possible because these 2 sites were already very fast.
