I have searched in the forum but i could not find something about the BMW 120d.
And the video would not work so my question is: Does the BMW 120d sound like a diesel or not?

Every modern day diesel is not sounding like a diesel anymore.

I have the BMW demo and it is sounding a bit dull, you miss the revving noise of the engine... But it is quick, there is a lot of torque, and that is needed on the Nordschleife



Tip;

Diesels are Much Much quieter these days you know.
Modern day Common rail diesel injection systems rely on electronics rather than the old style chain drive and gear drive sytems (which caused most of the old diesel rattle), to control fuel flow allowing manufacturers to use much quieter components in their engines.
They Rev much lower than a petrol counterpart, and the turbo allows them to have huge Pulling power.
My Transit Van will easily pull to over 100mph these days, where as my old Transit with mechanical Injection used to struggle to reach 80.

BMWs diesels are Very quiet.

PD recorded the sounds of all 650 cars in the game so that they'd actually sound realistic. I'll go out on a limb and say that the 120d in GT4 will sound exactly the same as it does in real life. I think this is like the whole reversing-lights embargo we had that blew out to about 5-10+ pages ... just a bit trivial.

I hope there will be some more Diesels in the game such as the Volkswagen Touareg V10 or the Mercedes S 400 CDI. Imagine the humongous torque you can squeeze out of those with some turbo tuning.
But I must say that I was a bit disappointed by the sound of the BMW 120d. Diesels may be much quieter today than they were in the past, but you can still hear it's a Diesel in reality. In the BMW demo you can't, the 120d does sound different than the 120i, but not particularly like a Diesel. So I hope there will be some improvement in that direction in GT4.

The 120d sounds as if it revs between 1000 and 1500 rpm. No r/l turbo diesel sounds like that.

Even more off subject : I wondered if the 1886 Daimler is a steam car? If so, I can't wait to make a pitstop and look at the heads of the crew when they open the tank ...

...well i have the BMW dealership DEMO and i can tell ya that it doesn´t sound that much like a diesel!...ok it sounds "deeper" than the 120i but it´s not that "dieseling" at all...

That's exactly what I meant: it does have a growly bass-note, but that "nailing" sound that's typical for a Diesel is missing.

Nobody knows that yet. The official car list contains only the 120d as a Diesel so far, but a lot of cars are missing yet, so noone can answer that now. I guess we'll know when the first reviews of GT4 will appear.

well lets consider the fact that people dont like that ugly diesel truck sound, thats why car manufacturers work hard on getting rid of the 'diesel' sound, thats why the series1 dont sound much like a diesel. I have heard a series 1 in motion and the team at pd got the sound right.

Sounds Odd, Most diesels have the Torque come in very early From around 1500 to 2000 rpm, although they then only rev up to around 4500rpm, before the Torque drops out.
The thing I like About modern diesels is you can pretty much Keep your foot planted, and slam them through the Box and the engine will be pretty much on power all the time.
Obviously their no scooby boxer, But my wife some times has use of a 320 diesel when her St220 is in the shop and it puts a lot of The Local Boyz Toyz to shame

At first you might drive one in reality because petrol costs about twice as much in Germany as in New Zealand. Diesel is cheaper and the engine makes more mpg than a petrol engine. Then you discover that a modern diesel can be a lot of fun, and you might want to drive a top end diesel in GT4.

Damn right GTXLR, my father has a 330d and its an amazing car and excellent engine.

Most diesel critics base their opinions on hearsay; drive a modern diesel (particularly a 320d or 330d), great drive and great engines.

apparantly it didnt finish the race, but the Lola was the first diesel-powered car to compete in the classic Le Mans 24 hr endurance race for 50 years.

They do sound different, but the 120d diesel doesn't sound like a diesel.

Yes, Diesel can be great!!

This is theNew York Central "High-speed" railcar M-497, put together by the NYC Railroad in 1966. The diesel Le Mans car had transmission problems (too much torque). The ACO is easing up on diesels allowing larger capacity higher boost and less restriction compared to gas engines. I also believe I read something about them deciding to allow larger tanks and much greater displacement on any hydrogen burning cars.

Just watched Amars Videos, and they sound about right for me.

Old diesels ratteled and clanked and generally sound terrible, and were short on power. Mostly this noise came from the Injector system all driven by cogs chains and gears.

New diesels especially the latest are now without the metal work to control the diesel injectors which run off elctronics and support a turbo, the engines are much more damped and refined and developed by enginers to reduce noise along with the lack of chain gear, long gone is the sound like the big ends were knocking out.

A modern diesel (from a descent co like BMW/Mercedes) now only makes a slight bit more noise in the block than a petrol but they hum now rather than rattle, and is much smoother than ever before, most noise now comes from the Turbo, at the top end of the engine as electonic injection has overtaken the mechanical injection.

The deeper note of the 120d in amars vid sounds not too disimilar, to my experience in a 94 320d as refered to earlier, i believe they share the same engine so i guess this was to be expected, My experience was the engine made slightly more mechanical noise in real life, but the tone was about right.
