So who here has a dirt bike?

I used to have one, I really am considering getting one of these.

I started at about age 8 or 9 with a Yamaha 60cc 2-stroke dirt bike. Then, when I was 10, I got a Honda 75cc 4-stroke dirt bike, which I loved. It had a lot of grunt for a little thing. I knocked my front teeth out on the Honda, doing a hill climb, before those foam tube pads for the crossbar were very common. Nobody at school had believed I had a motorcycle until I came to school Monday morning with no front teeth.

Around age 14 or so, I got a Kawasaki 175cc 2-stroke dirt bike. I rode that a lot with a friend of mine, on his farm, until I went to college. I dislocated my shoulder on that one when I got into a cow rut and the bars caught in a fence I was riding next to, trying to cut off some escaping cows we were herding. That was a fun bike to ride, but I think I like 4-strokes better. More low end works better for a heavy rider. I left that at my parents' house for a long time, and eventually I gave it to my nephew.

I never raced, or anything, but I was a decent rider - accidents to the contrary.

That's awesome, you've got quite the experience, why don't you get a cruiser now?

Anyways, I'm 14 and I'm considering getting a 1989 Suzuki RM250. I used to own a '82 Yamaha 80cc two stroke, before it was stolen 3 years ago. More information here on the Suzuki. It's selling for $1400. Which is pretty good. I'm more likely going to ride on my couzins farm too. They dirt bike alot so it'll be fun. I'm really light, 250cc may be too much power for me.

I'm not a big street bike fan. Well, let me put it this way: I would be a big streetbike fan, if it weren't for cars. I'm just not in the mood to dodge idiots and bluehairs all day, just to get to work.

175 would be fine, but 250 wouldn't be too much. Just use some common sense until you get a good feel for how the bike will react. $1400 seems a little steep for a 15-year-old bike, though it sure looks to be in good shape from the ad picture. I haven't been in the market for a bike for a long time, though, so I could well be mistaken.

It looks like fun, especially if you have a place like a nearby farm to ride it. Good luck!

You won't be able to find any newer dirtbike over 80cc for less than $1,000. They've gotten expensive now adays.

Yeah, so I hear. My kids' karate instructor is also an avid motorcyclist. He's currently selling a 1989 Honda 250 dirt bike for $1200, though it's been extensively refurbished. By the way, he says the RM Suzukis of that era were a little lacking in power, though he's a big guy. If you're lighter, it probably wont be a problem.

Check out that bike VERY thoroughly, and ask what's been replaced so far.

Good luck!

Heh, thanks! I'm not to keen on having a powerful bike yet, I plan on getting one of those ultrasleek, super fast, super bikes. When I'm older. That's awhile off though.
