Disc read error ((inconsistency))

Ferraris are slow. I don't have a Ferrari... :D

The slimline console (PSTwo) doesn't have a case fan, like the PS2 does (though it has a chipset fan) so doesn't cool down as easily. But the major heat source - the transformer - is external on the PSTwo while internal on the PS2.

As long as the PSTwo isn't stuffed into a cupboard and has plenty of space around it, for it to radiate heat to (there's a metallic heatsink strip across the centre of the console) there is no reason it should overheat at all - borne out by my example machine.

I have had couple of disk read problems - when the speedo loading dial turns red.
Best way I found to fix it seems to be pressing eject button twice to re-load the disk...

Just a note. That copy I exchanged is crapping out on me again. It worked for a couple weeks and now I am calmly resisting the urge to ram my fist into the motherboard.

:)

:nervous: I haven't used my ps2 in a while and I turned it on but the disc didn't load untill I put it vertical. I'm thinking maybe I should blow the insides out with my air compressor.

Now I have a REALLY strage problem. I'm turning the white thingy which changes the angle of the laser. It detected it a couple of times but whenever it did, the "Playstation 2" writing comes up barely then right away it goes to the screen where it shows the disc sitting in the middle. So I click the disc, screen turns dark, then returns to the same screen. Am I approaching a "sweet spot" or something?

Every other time when the disc is trying to load I hear a faint beep deep within the system, a spinning disc sound which seems to sound normal, then "tick tick tick tick...."

:scared: :dunce: :ouch:

Every "tick" is the laser lens smacking into the underside of your disc.

:odd: hmm... that isn't good. Why would it do that? There's usually two general sounds I hear one is for when I know it's gonna work and the other (a kinda faint clicking) means it ain't going to load. :grumpy:

:scared: I actually experienced your problem for a sec and it went away thankfully after the second time. I've now kept my ps2 vertical and it seems to work ok.

edit:

Ok I think I figured out some stuff... My GT3 and GT4 disk work fine but when it comes to the ARmax disc or Sharkport disc it doesn't want to work because of the disc's dark blue coating which I guess isn't reading. :grumpy:

edit:

On further review I believe now it's not the dark blue disk as I thought because my Sharkport disc works pretty easy. I'm now thinking my AR Max disc is too scratched and is the cause of the problems I'm having. They might be more sensitive I guess? At any rate if anyone has suggestions on a replacement AR Max disc that be great. Or I could attempt buffing this disc. :scared:

edit:

Well after much frustration and impatiences I decided to crack open the PS2 and see if using compressed air on it. It did work and I tried to clean the disk a bit more. I guess it was enough to work because I haven't had a problem with any of the discs I've put into it. The new problem is that the PS2 freeze in the middle of updating codes for the AR Max. :grumpy:

My friend told me to dust out the inside and all would be well. Doesn't that void the warranty?

I heard of a class lawsuit against Sony and I may be able to get my PS2 fixed or replaced.

Ugh, I just want the PS3 to get here. I should just start saving but I won't. It'll end up being spent on my bike. :-d

It's wayyyy past any warrenty anyway. Don't tell me that there's a lawsuit now...

I'll probably be set to buy the PS3 when it comes around. It's the games I'm worried about. :scared: I already got like 6 lined up. That's unprecedented for me. :grumpy:

so from what I'm reading here if I just crack it open and dust out the inside it will work fine again?

BTW, here are the symptoms its been displaying.

It started with DVD's (movies).
Now it won't read DVD games
But it reads one of my blue cd games.

Is it full of dust? And if I use a compressed air can, can I clean it out without cracking open the unit? I'd prefer not to have to take the case apart and then put it back together... but I'm not looking forward to buying a replacement PS2 either.

You could try doing it without cracking it open but I have a feeling you'd only be pushing the dust around. I guess the main area to clear would be the CDROM area so you could open the tray and shoot it that way. I haven't had any problems since cleaning mine. Good Luck

just as an update. i cracked open the case later in the day when I posted previously and voila! it loaded GT faster than it's ever loaded so thank you everyone that posted in here with information. it really really helped me out and saved me a bill fifty.

I cracked my old PS2 open and dusted it out and cracked open the actual disc drive and dusted it out too. It worked much better afterword but it only lasted for about 4 months before it was back to not readin blue discs and semi scratched discs.

So now I have a slimline PS2.

You have to keep the blue discs really really clean especially if there are scratches. It's really tempormental. I haven't had problems I couldn't explain so far. :knocks on wood:

Okay here it goes guys:

First let me note that I have one of the first PS2 models released, it is around 5 years old . I bought GT4 the week it was released. My copy worked perfectly, I left it on for almost a week. Turned it off one night and the next day I couldn't get it to play to save it's life. So I took it back to the store, got another brand new copy, still didn't work. Since my box is already cracked open ...
(I spent a lot of time realigning the laser to read my blue disks before I learned from someone in the video store to PUT ABOUT 1" OF SCOTCH TAPE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE HOLE TO PLAY BLUE DISKS if your machine is giving you a disk read error. Has something to do with the weight of the disk.. blah blah. None of my blue disks would play, now with a little tape, all 4 of them play without a problem) ...
I noticed while it was trying to read the disk that it wasn't spinning fast enough, so I got out my handy can of air. This I pointed at the edge of the plastic center piece and when the disk start spinning, I gave a good shot of the air... this worked... until i ran out of air. So the game got put on the shelf for a couple of months.

So recently for christmas I was given "God of War" ( 🤬 awesome game) and when I first tried to play it, it wouldn't read. Well I was just not having this so I uncovered my PS2 and began realigning the laser (adjusting the white cog in the back of the disk drive) after going around a complete 3 times and having a couple hours into it, nothing. So I hopped on the trusty internet. This time around I found a few articles about recalibrating the laser instead of just realigning it. This seemed to fix a lot of disk read errors, or so claims stated. There are many hypothesises on why the PS2 laser needs recalibrating, a lot of them include watching dvd's in your maching (something about the laser constantly reading during a dvd, whereas it loads and stores game information in the ps2). Well this repair is very expensive $80 - $120.

Well obviously my machine was worthless after learning that, because a used machine around here runs about $100. Knowing that I decided to try this recalibrating thing myself. I took my PS2 completely apart (laid out a big towel on the floor). I had to take it completely apart to unattach the disk drive (possibly because mine is quite old). Disk drive upside in hand, I then had the underside of the laser (very small motherboard surrounded in the plastic casing around the laser) facing up towards me and I noticed 2 small very bright silver screws. I turned them both 1/4 turn to the left and I half-reassembled my machine. Put in God of War, the disk wouldn't even spin. I then put in San Andreas (which has always worked), wouldn't even spin. I thought then that one of the cords to the disk drive was not properly attached, so I took it down again and reassembled making sure to plug in every cord properly and snugly. Disks still would not spin. I took my machine completely apart again and with the disk drive upside down in my hand, I turned those same 2 silver screws on the motherboard 1/2 turn to the right this time, so 1/4 right of starting point. I half assembled my machine once more, GTA played! So then I put in God of War, and it played! 2 succesful resets with God of War (the game that never worked even once)! Very excited at this point, I crossed my fingers and put in GT4, and it worked! I put my machine back together and voila.

It was just a matter of recalibrating my laser.

P.s. Don't go tearing into your machine, then get pissed at me when if you can't get it back together :D . I'm not recommending that everyone go and do this themselves... It was a tedious, time consuming repair that requires a steady hand, a very small screwdriver, and an hour of silence. However it was not as nearly as difficult as I had initiatly anticipated, definatly not worth $100 in my eyes ( having done it once, i could do it again in less than an hour).

on my new slimline it crashes the console and it doesnt load until you lift the lid up and i put my ear on the console and the disc isnt spinning or it does spin but comes up with the screen that says please insert a play station or play station 2 format disc or just sits there til you go to the browser and insead of a picture of the disc the screens dark and it says the disc could not be read. it cant be the ps2 because its one of the least scratched games and all 18 or so of my other games works fine and it cant be the disc cause it works fine when i brought it to my friends house and if it does work it works fine through the whole game but that takes ages this sucks and one night i got grumpy:grumpy: then mad:mad: then eventually i got so ticked off:banghead: i was about to snap the disc in half:crazy: :ouch: then after three hours of persistence it got into the game : phew::sly:

 pleeeeeeeeeease help:bowdown: this is such a pain

maybe well just have to wait and hope for the ps3 to play it properly because this absoloutely sucks:yuck: :dopey:   :odd:and it makes no sense:dopey:   :odd:

:yuck: i am sick to death of trying to get gt4 working:yuck:
💡 i think it works better on mine when its dead cold:idea:

Here's my problem...

Everything works fine so far, EXCEPT when I try to join the El Capitan race in the 4WD league of the beginner's hall. Then I get the red stopwatch thing and the race won't load so I have to reset my PS2. I'm using the Nismo 400 R. I haven't tried using a different car yet, so I guess I'll try that tonight after work.

Is anyone aware of any other solutions?

Choosing a different car didn't help, and I started getting this error with another race (the second in the roadster league of the Beginner's Hall,) so I ordered a new copy of GT4. I sure hope I can do all of the races now.

Just FYI, you can get GT4 from Amazon.com for $9.99 now, through Toys R Us.

Every "tick" is the laser lens smacking into the underside of your disc.

Thats not entirely true, when I was trying to figure out why my PS2 (bought a few days after release) wouldnt read 1 particular disc, i had it in pieces (checking every connection for corrosion) and turned it on, and it still made the 'tick tick tick' noise, even without a disc in it. The noise seems to be the laser focus screw over running it's thread (it's designed to do that without harm), and also makes the same sound when it hits the stops on its radial travel (across the disc). If it was the laser hitting the disc, then there would be big deep circle scratches in the disc, and none of my discs have that.

I am using a brand new silver slimline console, which cost me no more than a black one, and it gets warm, but that it because it is sitting on a blanket which has been thrown over an old milk crate to make a coffee table, not ideal, but the only solution I have at the moment. I used to have overheating problems with my PSX, and I solved it by sitting it on top of some thick books with a large air gap underneath it (which is where the ventilation holes were on the PSX), however the PSTwo (slimline console) has its ventilation in the rear, so this shouldnt be toomuch of an issue, I think?

just my $0.02

I have a problem with Mazda cars. I was in arcade mode, and I wanted to play with a RX-7, when I was in the menu where I can choose the car, the game just showed the background, the car was invisible, and then the game freezes, so I turn off my PS2. Like 2 hour later I played again, every thing normal, ultill I went to the used car lot, I want a black RX-7, so there it was, but the same thing happened, only visible the background, no car. I presed the reset button...GT4 started normal, as always, and I went straight to arcade to choose a Mazda, but again the same thing, no car, just the background. Restarted againg the PS2, went to arcade, this time a chose a Skyline, everything normal.
I don't know if this will happen with another make, by now is only with the Mazdas.
(sorry for my english)

I had an extra hard drive laying around so I ordered HDLoader off of the web and stuck the drive in my PS2. I loaded GT4 on the drive and I never have any problems. Load times are a little faster and I figure its less stress on the laser running off of a hard drive. I loaded all the games I own on to the drive. For the slim PSTwos there is USB extreme made by the same company. You can get an external drive or a external drive case and an internal hard drive and do the same thing. It may help some of you guys. Just a thought!

I have brought this up elsewhere but haven't fully got it sorted. I have a slimline ps2 and when a disc is inserted the screen goes to the browser with the message " There is no data". I'm sure the problem is not with the disc as it happens with any one I put in. I never get " Disc read error" .
Does anyone have a solution to this?
Cheers and very frustratedly,
nige :grumpy: :grumpy:

This thread's back.

I'm on my second copy of gt4 now and my ps2's already scratched it heaps.:grumpy:

Now the same thing happens with Mercedes-Benz.

EDIT: Just try again with Mercedes...didn't work.
I wont buy a HHD, it too late now as the PS3 is out already
