Does the F@H client run invisible to the user? My users don't exactly know they're contributing to RC-5 (:

And speaking of RC-5, I'm nearly into the top 100 overall.

👍

There are many ways to do it, including a lot of ways to install 'silently'.

I'm not sure of the exact procedure they go through for a mac, as I don't have a mac, but I've heard about it. Not hard. On Windows systems I know the best way is just to install it as a service.

According to my stats page I'm about a week away from position 100 overall. Then it'll be another few days before I drop to a two digit rank. YEAH!!! Been a long time coming. And I'm adding a BUNCH more CPU power at work. I've got seven new P4 computers and a few more Pent-M laptops. Then in a couple months I'll throw in some more G4s.

"We're movin` on UUuuuuUUUUUuuUUUPPP! To the top. Finally got a piece of the PIIIEEEEEE"

What the heck is the purpose of this, and what are you doing?

Well, the purpose of the SETI@Home project is to analyze recorded radio signals from the huge radio dish that is located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Basically, the project consists of recording radio signals on different frequencies and then sending them out as workunits to individual computers to analyze using various algorithms. Under the new version of SETI@Home called BOINC, each workunit is analyzed by four computers. If all four computers reach the same result on a workunit then credit is granted based on the amount of claimed credit each computer has claimed (An average of all four is the amount awarded).

You might want to read the team thread if you're interested in joining. However, please create an account with the BOINC version of the team if you intend to join. The original SETI@Home project is due to be shut down in the next few months, so it is somewhat pointless to join it now.

As for Distributed.Net, I have no idea about its purpose. Loudmusic knows more about that than I.

How often does the new version update your credits? I just started messing with it, and no credit has been granted. I have sent off a few "workunits", but nothing.

I am assuming that it takes a few days for the other user's units to match your's, correct?

The website for the boinc project usually updates statistics at least once a day I believe. If you have not gotten workunits yet it may be a while. Try manually updating the project by right-clicking on the project under the projects tab in the boinc client.

Yes. The only way credit is granted to you is if all three computers reach the same conclusion on a given workunit. As for credit being granted for a workunit, that depends really. It can be several hours later or more than likely several days. When I first started crunching units under boinc, I probably didn't see any granted credit for at least two months. That was rather early in the project when they were still having problems daily. Now that the project is pretty much stable, I gain credit every day.

If you've already ported your account over to the boinc project and it hasn't added you to the team you can do so through this page. I can't remember if you have to rejoin the team manually or not because I was automatically added since I am the team founder. TB likely has an answer to that.

@ space

Both of the stats pages I go to and SETI's site don't have you listed. Then again their site has been a little skitish lately since they are moving to a new server.

Same here. I say give it a few days. Have you had any credit granted to you, space? I read somewhere that members with no credit are not displayed on team pages (which would explain why the rest of the team isn't shown). Maybe after you get credit granted it will show you.

That would make the most sense. Hopefully all will work out in a few days.

i had th on my home pc for 3-4 years, then i moved out and my dad removed it because he said that he was getting viruses from it. I don't have a pc at home at the moment and my work pc won't allow it.

^He thought S@H caused a virus?

Not necessarily caused but downloaded and installed. It's very possible. Think about it - you are running a program on your computer that downloads stuff from the internet and does something with it. Who's to say they don't have it doing "other things" ? Basically you trust them to be honest because you have no idea what it's doing. It's the same with any of these distributed projects.

By the way, I'm finally to possition 100 overall in the entire world for RC5-74. (: Additionally I will be mildly accellerating over the coming year as I upgrade and add a few more computers to my fleet. When I decide that I have met my highest possible rank I'll probably stop maintaining it on all my computers and let it die off.

I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I have a tendency to trust things like S@H or D.net more than, say, going to "some guys" site and downloading something.

Congrats on the top 100 status. How many computers do you have running? As of right now I am sitting at position 5,577 out of 69,679 and climbing and the team is at 1,946 of 11,288. Not bad since I've only been running it for around 4 months.

I have a whole slew of computers working RC5. Ten dual 2Ghz G5 Power Macs, probably another 10Ghz worth of G4 power, and another 5Ghz of G3 power. Then in the range of 25Ghz of P4 power. I'm running in the 20 to 40 range on a daily basis. Once this, now, two digit rank gets settled in (someone is nearly passing me to bump me out again ...) I'll stop managing the machines and let it die off. If I can find a suitable project (dnet and seti don't count) I'll start running it on all my machines.

A little FYI about DAD:

He gets new virus all the time. The reason he won't listen to anyone and he opens every e-mail he gets even if the virus scan blocks it. Then he will download the attachment even when norton finds a virus present. He think it could be something important. :dunce: Drives me crazy i've fixed his competer tons of times because he just won't listen. Then he blames it one something lke SETI or games we install on the PC. He just doesn't get it. I gave up a long time ago on him and his pc.

Sounds like he needs to learn the following:

Never open attachments from strangers!

Or sometime, just sometimes, your kid might know more than you do.

The new server is up at Berkley. Things should start flowing a little more smoothly soon. Did space ever get switched over to BOINC? I havn't seen him show up in the list but it could be because he doesn't have credit yet.

Yes. He's running BOINC but has not had any credit granted. As soon as credit is granted to him, he should appear in the list. It took me several months to even have my first few credits granted to me so hopefully it won't take as long.

Ever since the DB crash last week, I've had practically no workunits. Hopefully, they've fixed that issue finally.

Twenty pending already space? 👍
Up until about a week ago all of my comps were running good. Looks like most of them have wu's to crunch now, also. We did a quick runthrough and it looks like we have about 350 wu's (or 11,000 credits) pending. I see a big day coming.

This doesn't look too bad, either:

Top 16.8% for TC and top 4.25% for RAC. And that's with only 2 people running....(hint, hint) :sly:

Where'd you find that?

I'm hoping that my credit will start getting granted soon:D

I do like this version of SETI better, it allows me to cache the "workunits" so i dont have to connect every 8-10 hours

Surely there's a better project you could be working on than SETI. That's not to say that I think the RC5-72 project is any better, but maybe together we could find something that actually needs more CPU power. Folding for example ...

It looks like most of the units you have worked on have at least three results, so it shouldn't be too long. Also, it appears that the new server is working much better than the old one. For the last couple of days, it said there were around 20 units to send. Now there are 43,000. You shouldn't get the "No work from server" message for a while.
