Just curious: Do PD pay manufacturers to license their cars and models? Or is it the other way around, and the manufacturers either let them use them for free or pay PD (after all, it is great free publicity for them)?

Does anybody have any definitive information on this? If PD pay, does anyone know what kind of costs are involved? I know manufacturers have all kinds of restrictions on how their cars are portrayed - anyone know what these are?

well considering how long it took them to include Ferrari and Lamborghini, I think you can answer the question yourself :)
I'm not an expert on this (which is why I'm asking!) but I thought that was more negotiations on how the cars are portrayed rather than over money? Can you expand on why it took so long? What were the stumbling blocks?

Honestly, it should be the other way around, manufactures should pay to have their cars in GT5, its wonderful advertising. Porsche is missing out on a huge market by not being in GT5.

I was wondering about something the other day.

Given that PD have a tendency to strap sensors to cars and then absolutely thrash them around courses until destruction, is this why cars such as the 250GTO aren't in the game?

Just too expensive to risk?

Otherwise it'd be great to have manufacturers' DLC with all of their classic and iconic vehicles

Porsche want to be in GT, it's only because of the exclusive license sale years ago to EA (and EA seemingly won't sublicense to PD) they can't.

It works both ways, If the game wants a particular marque then they will pay to use the rights but if an manufacturer is keen to promote a brand or particular car then they will pay the game developer to put it in the game.

Robin.

I understand that, but its their own damn fault.

True, assuming they're different people the person in charge today really should slap whover thought it'd be a good idea to give out an exclusive license in the nineties. Mind you like most things regarding EA, I imagine it involved a large sum of money.

I don't think Porsche needs in game exposure for advertising anyway, I doubt there are many people who know of GT but doesn't know of Porsche.

Ah... now I know why....
Damn, EA has so much money, the can give Porsche for free to PD 👍

That for me is the interesting question, lots of assumptions have been thrown around but I don't think anyone knows for sure why EA sublicenced them to other games like Forza but haven't to PD. Is it that EA don't want to give it to them or that PD aren't interested in paying whatever fee they're asking?

Be interesting to know.

Same could be siad of Ferrari as of Porsche.

Could be more to do with Porsche money problems of a few years back.
They are now Part of VW.

So things may change with them being in GT Series in the future.
No sure if EA could stop Porsche/VW from letting anyone else use the cars in another game.

For sure they would be better in GT than NFS Games.

Sure would be nice to have a 962 or 956 in game.

Along with some class Porsche Road cars old & new.

Sure it will happen one day maybe GT7 seing how long it took to get Ferrari.:)

I hear this all the time about Porsche's exclusive license with EA since the 90's, but I can't tell you how much time I spent using the 959 in Project Gotham Racing 2 some time around 2004. A quick search tells me that was published/distributed by Activision, so I'm a little skeptical about this explanation that we hear all the time. Did EA license the Porsche license to Activision? Aren't Porsches in Forza? Did MS back up the truck and pay for some sort of sub-license from EA that precluded a license to PD? I'd love to see "the widowmaker" and its progeny in GT...

Yes, see my post above. EA sublicence the licence to other people, that's why I asked which way around it was with PD. Were/are EA not letting PD have the licence or did PD not want to pay whatever money EA want? I'd assume it's the latter.

I thought I read somewhere that PD's earlier philosophy was not to include any manufacturers that wanted payment. obviously that changed, if it was indeed true.

It's not about initial exposure, it's about people's opinion of a particular car going up once they've had a chance to 'drive' one.

I can say I have more respect for Audi after flinging an R8 around the track.

I agree with most of the people here, Porsche are missing out bigtime.

Hmm works both ways.

Seems as though this developer doesn't mind bringing out old sub standard models to use in a current game.

Maybe Porsche doesnt want future games to show there cars as a sub standard model to who ever PD are in bed with at that time.

Imagine premium RUFs racing against standard Porsches. Lol.
That would go down a treat.

Different manufacturers look at things differently. Consider it this way ...

If GT had no actual cars and just had really good physics and gameplay, would anyone buy it? Compare Live for Speed sales to GT and see for yourself.

It can be beneficial to both parties, so I would think with the success of the GT series manufacturers would like to be included. But, some people wouldn't want the Skyline to destroy their supercar either. So, it's all in the negotiation.

I assume many manufacturers get a percentage of the profits.

Koeningseggggg (or something) sent their model to PD with "a reasonable offer" but seems like PD was not interested. I remember this from the forums at time of GT5 Prologue.

Uxi
Me neither, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Is 60 million a WAG or did you get that number from somewhere?

It's been said on here for quite awhile.
GT5 60 million development costs.
Who knows really.

Maybe at the beggining of the GT series PD had to pay but now I am pretty sure it is the other way around 80 % of the time.An Example is Ferrari ,they really wanted to be on GT5 and I have seen a Video some time asking the same question to Kaz he said most Manufactures Offer to pay for their cars to be in the game but PD refuse to as a nice jesture and to use this to do some collabrations in the Future like the GT by Citroen etc...

I would guess that the car brands with a lot of premium cars will be those that PD have had to buy licences for.

For instance, all Ferrari models are premium...whereas there are a lot of better cars than them that are not.

That's just a hunch, not quite sure.

From what I've heard PD haves to pay to damage the cars, anyways, I think PD should pay to get the 'most wanted', the Manufacter should pay PD for getting their lastest cars as publicity *coughskylineandgtrcough* and classic old cars should be neutral.
