The point of this argument was basically to say that if you smoke, you're stupid for doing it. Nobody is trying to tell you what to do with your life or body, other than the ones who don't want you to smoke in front of them (fair enough).

It's getting very tiring that people don't see this fact. Nobody is telling you what to do.

By the way, saying that driving is as bad as smoking a cigarette is completely ridiculous.

Not really. I want to see a report done by a creditable source that shows smoking reduces sperm count. Show me and I might believe it...but then again we are asking these researchers that just cater to whoever is giving them grant money (another thread some other time perhaps?). And no I don't want to hear someone say "It's a commonly known side affect to smoking" because it's not. I bet I could ask 100 people and only 5 of them would know.

It's widely known knowledge that smoking reduces your sperm count, ask your doctor, any health organisation. It's basic fact. It's commonly known to anyone who wants to believe what the experts say, rather than cook up some conspiracy about them.

The evidence is out there, and it's your perogative to find it not mine.

Inhaling Carbon Monoxide, Tar, Lead, Arsenic, ooh great fun.

I'm not the one who wants me to quit. But I said I did not want to hear a response like that, you guys told me that cigarettes cause lower sperm counts and I asked to see your sources. Show me some scientific data and I'll be happy to believe it...all I can find it things on the internet that say "Experts say...." or "According to the experts.....". Without an actual science report or some kind I'm not really going to buy it, anyone can post stuff on these men's health sites.

Just out of curiosity why do people I barely know care what I do? I could understand a family member telling me that I'm stupid for smoking but a bunch of people on an internet forum? I don't understand.

Yeah! I smoked a cigarette once. All the children in a ten block radius of me dropped stone dead of lung cancer before I'd got halfway through it

If that's a reference to my "so is driving" comment that you quoted (which it might not be, since I didn't equate driving to smoking) then please go back and read my whole statement rather than the misleading truncation that you used. It should be patently obvious I wasn't being serious.

But I also recommend not going down the "driving is / isn't as bad as smoking" route. 25 minutes on Google will easily dig up pages of guesstimates showing that driving in many well developed countries is a greater health risk to both drivers and pedestrians. I say many, because I know UK statistics say that smoking kills more people than cars in this country. But the UK has one of the lowest car fatality rates in the world. Moving on from there, more statistics might show that cars and particularly diesel engines produce at least as many harmful pollutants as smoking cigarettes if not more. I don't actually know because I ran out of bothered before I'd finished typing in the URL, but I'm sure someone else will shoot you down with maths. Its your choice.

I care about all life, think of me as a white Gandhi ;)

I was doing some search on this trying to find something on the BMA on Smoking and it's side effects with regards to fertility, and I found this...

http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/humancosttobacco~UK?OpenDocument&Highlight=2,Smoking

Some quotes that make an interesting point on the damage of second hand smoke.

http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/smokingreproductivelife?OpenDocument&Highlight=2,Smoking

If you click on the pdf file you should get the report, the BMA should be a respected enough authority for you?

I think we are 'exposed' more to the dangers of smoking in the UK, we've had graphic adverts on the effects of smoking for quite a while now, don't know if it's the same stateside.

I'll have to read the reports when I get home from work, but yes I will accept the BMA (assuming British Medical Asso.) as a creditable source of information.

Which is why I quoted you much earlier, saying "I hope you weren't serious".

It was directed at the small argument earlier about driving statistics, etc.

This thread is getting ridiculous. In case anyone wants to throw a hissy fit and take it personally, that was directed at the thread in general.

NO I DO NOT SMOKE.

Reason #1: I'm not old enough.
Reason #2: It's bad for you.
Reason #3: Cigarettes look weird.
Reason #4: I don't want cancer.
Reason #5: It smells bad.

No offense intended to smokers, it's just my opinion.

:-)
