Do you use the driving line ?

This. Many people who turn the driving line on get hooked on following the line perfectly and eventually they block out everything that's happening around them including other drivers just for the sake of staying on the line all the time. That is the reason why people, along with the reason of already knowning a better line around the corners tend to not drive with the racing line on.

Sounds a lot like the AI lol. These guys stick to the line like their life depended on it and totally disregard anyone that's around them.

I do not use the driving line aid because it is not the true racing line. It's not the actual racing line because I find that the line apexes in sharp corners much too early and it's easier and faster if you find your own apexes, braking points etc. because I use no ABS and because I use a certain technique to shorten braking distances, I find myself braking and turning much later than the in-game racing line suggests.

To those that want to know how to find the best racing line, then check this YouTube video out. Watching it has improved my times by at least 4 seconds just by watching this and applying it to my driving in Gran Turismo 5:

You see, the whole point of the racing line is not to cover the straightest, fastest path of the track, but to maximise your exit speed onto the straights, therefore making you faster at the end of the track and reducing the time of your laps. If you start thinking to yourself to increase your exit speed instead of covering the least amount of distance around the track, then you can happily watch your laptimes drop .

That natural racing line you see is the line that many people use and therefore has worn down due to extensive use. In real life, that line tends to be more slippy compared to other areas of the track, but you only notice it when the track is wet. You also notice it more on very old racing tracks that haven't been repaved for quite some time, the Nurburgring for example. You also notice this on GT5 on the nurburgring but not so much on the more modern race tracks.

I do, sorta. It's on because I'm too lazy to change it, but I don't pay attention to it. For beginners its a good guide, same if you're concerned with tire wear.

That can be frustrating especially when you are trying to pass on their inside in a corner and they squeeze you into the wall. It can be hard to convince these yahoos that they don’t own that line.

I do keep my racing line on. I get the most use out of in when driving side by side in a corner. With no side view mirrors, and not knowing exactly where the other guy is I can track along side the line and if the other guy stays in his lane all is good.

I don’t think the braking indicator (red line) takes elevation or banking in to account. I first noticed this at Trial Mountain.
I have a custom track that has a fast turn. The terrain makes the car very heavy so it sticks very well through that corner. The line turns bright red just before it, but you really don’t need to brake at all.

The only time I would drive with the driving line on is when I'm driving around a dark track with headlights that aren't really bright since the driving line glows in the dark.

I think last time I use it was on License Tests, I did them at the beginning. I was aware they don't really count for nothing but I was used to do them from GT1 to 4.
Then I turned it off.

I admit tho I still use the gear indicator, as mrntioned before, it just gives a hint on when to brake. I dont choose the indicated gear, I sort of 'notice' it instead of paying attention to it. Same with Forza and their driving/braking line, I don't pay attention to it on tracks I know like LeMans and Motegi, but I need it at Road America and Nürburgring...? yes the Ring! Because its modeled so strange there!

I sometimes turn HUD off completly, its fun with premiums, but I don't get faster with it yet, only do it for cruising.

On the ring, every time i remember it. No way can i remember all those turns perfectly. Safety first when it matters. :-) then again, its just a game

I used it when the game first came out, and when I was learning how to use the wheel. The driving line seems like it would help, but it makes it just a lot more complicated than it needs to be. And it helps to know multiple ways around a track (agressive, defensive, etc).

I turned off the driving line at the start. I only occasionally use it at Nurburgring. I can't get the corners or speed right at that track in any game. Frustrating.... Granted I should keep working on the AMG challenges to get better but that's no fun...
