I'm not usually excited about black-colored cars like most of you are. I'd rather prefer black with silver stripes and not silver with black stripes myself. Not that it would happen, but would you be okay if the Challenger came in a massive number of colors like some old school muscle cars? Too bad Trans-Am isn't around anymore. I'd love to see what a Trans-Am race car version of this new Challenger would be like.

You,sir, have once again proven that you're an evil genius. 👍 I wouldn't mind Plum Crazy, Go Mango, Top Banana, and all the other fun colors to come back. A shame it won't happen though.

I think they could all do "Trans-Am" one offs.

The sides could use something to break the boredom that it seems to have on the side profile. (But the boredom is gone with black)

If by some means I could afford a real one and modify it, I would have it set up to be a sort of modern T/A car, though road legal :sly:
In fact, some day I may have to do a 3d model of the idea I have...
 
Nearly perfect! I love everything about it (bar the weight, and it's a muscle car, so the interior doesn't need to be great).

Is this coming to Australia? I would assume so, considering Dodge is making a comeback here and wants to make a bigger impact with it's bold lineup as possible. Hemi Orange please.
 
No word lately if it will be a global vehicle or not. Back in the days of DaimlerChrysler, I believe they said that it would not, but given that Cerberus may in fact still have some marbles rolling around up there, it very well could.

Given that the Mustang and Camaro will both be global vehicles, I see no reason why the Challenger shouldn't be...
 
Do some of you think a proper pony-car-style Charger could be in the works if Dodge created a proper Charger rather than the Charger we have now? Here are the differences below. Imagine Dodge reinventing the Charger to be the big brother of the Challenger:

Surprise! Dodge Challenger convertible planned
During yesterday's unveiling of the Dodge Challenger, Chrysler's Vice Chairman, Jim Press, confirmed what we've already known; that Dodge expects to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 Challengers a year once production goes full-bore. All 6,400 Collectors Edition SRT8 models due to hit dealers this spring have been sold and there's a waiting list for the 2009 models. Naturally, more variants will be available next year with less powerful engines and a convertible version is supposedly in the works.

According to the Freep, Press expounded on the Challenger's virtues, saying that the SRT8 has a higher top speed (170 mph) than BMW's M5. Kind of a misnomer considering that the M5's speed limiter keeps the BMW sedan below 155 mph &#8211; unleashed, it has the potential of doing 205 mph. The Freep also quoted Press as saying that the Challenger has more torque than the Porsche 911 Turbo. Ummm... no. The 6.1-liter Hemi V8 produces 420 lb.-ft. of twist compared to the 911 Turbo's 460 lb.-ft. Maybe he was misquoted (he meant or said 911, not Turbo?), since his next line gave us pause. "When you sit inside, it makes you feel younger and richer than you are." Younger? Maybe. Richer? Not quite Mr. Press. We've seen the interior and it's hardly what you'd call luxurious, let alone exciting.
 
That'll help sales. Hopefully, they'll axe the Sebring 'vert and just sell this one.

Of course, it's too bad that the VC's making all these outrageous claims on unfounded grounds. really diminishes what credibility the car had left after DCX dropped Chrysler to die on it's own...we can hope that they have a better interior up their sleeves...

What the hell? They actually managed to sell out the entire 2008 models? I'm not saying it's a bad car, but the price for the Challenger was a bit high, imo.

Maybe now is a good time to bring back collector cars....

Think about how many people work at Chrysler and wanted to buy this as well as the 50 year olds that had one back in the day. It could be awful and they would still sell the first run.

Remind me one of these days and I'll try to find out how long the wait-lists are here in Grand Rapids. I can't imagine these things being easy to find for the 2009 model year either...

The Dodge Challenger SRT8 has graced the cover of just about every major automotive rag these past couple months, and muscle car-loving Baby-Boomers are emptying their 401Ks for the chance to own one. If your budget can't take the blow of a $40,000 coupe, however, the folks at Chrysler have debuted a couple more models at the 2008 New York Auto Show that will cost quite a bit less. The Challenger R/T will take the stage later today in NYC and it offers a good portion of the SRT8's power, as well as nearly every design cue seen on its more expensive big brother. Dodge is also unveiling the base SE model (right) for those who want a good looking RWD coupe on a budget.

Since the SRT model was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show over a month ago, we already know a lot about the Challenger in general. For the R/T model, the real story lies under its hood where an upgraded 5.7L Hemi V8 engine has received a 30-hp bump to 370 ponies, while torque also increases by eight to 398 pound-feet. Opt for the new pistol grip six-speed manual tranny – a first for any LX-platform model – and power jumps to 375 hp and 404 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm, but premium fuel is recommended if you want that third pedal.

Chrysler pumped up its famous powerplant by adding variable valve timing, which helps increase its compression ratio from 9.6 to 10.5, and by adding a second spark plug per cylinder for a cleaner burn and higher peak power. Besides providing extra grunt, technology enhancements improve fuel economy by 5% versus the previous generation HEMI while also improving the quality of its tailpipe emissions.

The Challenger R/T features a long list of standard equipment including 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, dual exhaust, ABS, ESP, traction control, vented brakes and an eight-way adjustable power driver seat. Buyers can also check off options like Remote Start, Keyless Go push-button start and heated leather seats. Dodge will also make available a special Classic R/T version that wears Richard Petty B5 Blue with black side stripes and unique script badging later in the 2009 model year. The Classic R/T will also feature five-spoke 20 inch rims that won't be available on any other Challenger model.

For RWD Coupe-lovers on a budget, Dodge will also offer a base Challenger SE (above is the only pic we have so far). The car will be given the well-traveled 250-hp 3.5L V6 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. As you can see from the photo above, the SE model also looks very much like the more upscale R/T model, save for its 17-inch steel wheels.

2009? Should that read 2008? Another year seems like a bit to wait. I thought they had already started production.
 
You really have no clue do you? The Viper was never designed to match the Corvette in sales, so the fact that it doesn't shouldn't really be shocking.

Huh? lol, uhh... The Viper was to help get Chrysler out of the hole they were digging. Inspire everyone. Shortly after the concept car and other stuff Chrysler rocketed back to life.

Even then, Nobody would say it would be to match Corvette sales. That's silly.

I don't think it'll be enough to run toe-to-toe with the Camaro, BUT, If they spread the love (and power) around some, It should make the Charger and 300C run a little better.

It would have to lose about 300 lbs to be anywhere close to Camaro territory. For that matter, Mustang territory. This car is waaaaaaay too heavy to be much more than a nice-looking, quite-driving, "gentleman's musclecar."

Give me a cutting torch and a wrench set and I can strip 300 lbs or more outta most modern cars :p
Anyway any word on the price of the R/T?
 
I'd think that the R/T would start somewhere between 28 and 33 grand. The SE most likely around 24 to 25.

Also I think that the SE looks the best, just because it has no deck lid spoiler.
 
If its anything like the Charger its based on, it'll likely start right at $30K even. The V6 will likely cut about $5-7000 off that price.

...Still makes it a lot more than the Mustang, which isn't a good thing. A Camaro premium I can understand, the Challenger one I cannot...

I can ONLY see the Challenger SE being bought based on the styling; a V6 Mustang can be had off the last brand spanking new for $16K these days.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and bet that a V6 Mustang will easily outpace the Challenger -- the Ford's low weight of 3300 pounds versus the Challenger's likely-nigh 4000 pounds will completely negate the horsepower differential (an underrated 210 versus 250). Chrysler's decision to saddle this thing with a prehistoric four-speed is ridiculous; Mustangs come with five-speeds, both manual and auto. It's almost no contest.

And from what I've read, the big bad SRT8 Challenger only plays in the same field as a plain old Mustang GT, for that matter.

But then again, you can barely tell an SE Challenger apart from an SRT8, as opposed to a V6 Mustang from any V8 model. It's going to be a great car for poseurs.

(All that being said, I would buy one, because it's HOT -- ONLY if they had a manual transmission option.)
