How can you people say that it's ruined when you don't even know anything about the new Challenger yet? As long as it's true to the nature of the original Challenger it's not ruined.

Um... :cough: 06 Dodge Charger :cough: not to mention Mercedes is at the helm. It's amazing I've heard people say Dodge is doing well though. Go figure.

I did not say "ruined", but I did say they are going to "ruin" it. This is because IMO, Dodge ruined the Charger. Some members accuses me of whining, that's fine. That is their opinion. I "whine", because I don't like companies cheapening the name of classic cars, with their marketing ploy. Just my opinion.

Considering that the new Charger is a far, far better car from the factory than the original ever was, I don't see how they've ruined anything.

Remember, you're talking to a guy that owns and has always owned a variety of '60s-era cars.

And VIPFREAK, if you think Mercedes is actually doing anything to benefit Chrysler, I'd say you're mistaken. Mostly what Mercedes does is require Chrysler to use some Mercedes parts, and then backcharge them for the development costs.

And I will respect your view for that, but I think I've made a valid point of why I don't like it. Again, that's my opinion.

The new car being better than the original has nothing to do with it. If your company can't outdo what your engineers did decades ago, you got some problems.

That's not too much of a besmirching of the E Type name, as it's quite good looking...

If not concieved :(

My point being, I didn't like the crappy Daewoo car because it sucked... not because Pontiac dared to name it Le Mans and thus "completely riuned" the name of my actual Le Mans in the process. I didn't think about that for a moment, and I think people who agonize about it, particularly if they were too young to have any real involvement with the original, are slightly silly.

What about the Audi Pikes Peak SUV?

Edit: Or Citroen Xsara Picasso?

Duke, you might like this one. :p Five out of seven people I asked didn't even know about the old Le Mans, but if you include me, that's six out of eight. Two people who knew about the old Le Mans were both older than me, so basically, everyone my age and under had never heard of Pontiac Le Mans before the Korean one. Everybody's heard of Charger and Challenger though. :D

Look, I do get your point. But to say younger people are "slightly silly" to judge, because they weren't involved with the original, is a little judgemental. I think, my opinion makes just as much sense as yours.

I'm really just busting your chops (if you're old enough to know what that means). And I didn't mean to say only younger people who were hung up on the name were silly; I meant to say anybody who was hung up on the name was silly.
;)
But YES, in the end, you're certainly entitled to your opinion!

Thanks Duke....... for busting my chops! :D You're cruisin' for bruisin', Your a** is grass, I'm the lawn mower, etc. etc.

I knew of the lemans long before I started posting here (a guy in my town has one, it is beautiful). But your right, it doesn't have the same presence as a some of the more famous muscle cars.

Yeah, I wasn't aware of the Le Mans until Duke posted those pics on the first page. They are beautiful cars though. :)

It's been a while since I posted this picture but hey I can't resist (like I'm trying). Here's my car:

Rear wheel drive performance sedans have been the sole domain of the semi-luxury european segment for the last how many years, and now everyone is complaining about the naming cinventions of the resurgent muscle cars? They are ALL true to form, and offer so much more than the originals did. So much more than their competition (FF people movers or rice-mobiles). We have cars that are more or less American made, RWD, V8 machines that are putting out some amazing numbers, and will be decently fun to drive and are AFFORDABLE! After walking through a massive classic car show this weekend, I look at these new cars and see an alternative to buying a used BMW or Merc to get RWD and some handling(not a lot--just some. But better than ANY FF CRAPOLA!). The power is just gravy!

As far as the 2 door/4 door thing goes, most of you have NO idea how different it is to get into a 2 door car today than it used to be. We didn't even HAVE child car seats, let alone a LAW requiring their use. Besides the fact that the old muscle cars had more backseat room than a 760il, they were easy to get into, too. I'll bet M5Power has a pretty rough time getting his new car seat into the back seat of his car these days. Number of doors is immaterial to any arguement comparing old to new in my opinion, since the balance in ANY case is so much better in the new cars.

Now, having said that, I like the Monaro's styling better than the GTO's, but I think it's an awesome car. I love the Charger, too, and have discussed the re-introduction of RWD by American manufacturers considerably, especially in the family oriented markets, where dad would LIKE something sporty, but can't afford a Merc or BMW, and therefore had NO RWD options. I think the Charger is without competition in it's market, and think the others of the big 3 should follow suit by bringing the Falcon and the Commodore to the states--look, no R&D work! Just import them! And, I'll stop, before this turns into a rant.

So if people think the new Charger is sacriligious, what do they think of the mid-80's Dodge Charger that was based on the Mitsubishi Starion?

You ****ing lucky ass bastard I hate you even more! I love that car and that year! :irked:

Don't feel so bad. It's a 326 2-barrel, with a 2.56 rear and a two-speed Powerglide. It's pretty slow off the line. It also does not look as good in real life as it does in that picture; though I didn't retouch it, I just got lucky. It needs a ton of professional bodywork (I did it myself 20 years ago) and it has 270,000 miles on it.

It's nice to own but in the grand scheme of things it ain't worth much. If it was a GTO it would be worth a small mint. It would have been, but thanks to my sister (who turned 16 in 1967, when Dad bought the car for Mom) it's only a Le Mans. To top it off my sister later got a red '68 GTO convertible of her own...

ugh... a two speed?! My dad's 65 mustang convert has a 4spd manual. :D It's still a great car and I've always liked that year GTO convert.👍

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

Nice car Duke! :O 👍 Do you plan to keep that car for the rest of your life? :odd: I think it could be worth alot if you do some restoration to it.

M5Power
"They're going to ruin it"? How are they going to ruin the memory of a car from the 1960s? All they're doing is borrowing the name. I still don't get why people care so much about heritage and long-running names in the auto industry. Get over it.

Besides, after the 1980's K-car-based Charger (Or was it Plymouth Laser? Or Daytona?), things can only look better and brighter.

@ Pupik: The 2.2 turbo Shelby Charger was a cheap little rocket, just like the original Charger was a cheap large rocket, and the new Charger will be a (relatively) cheap, (relatively) large, (relatively) rocket. I fail to see why people obsess so much over the name when the market slot that hasn't changed, only the shape of the car.

@ Angel: Thanks! I like to say I've owned that car since I was 2 years old (that's when Dad bought it for Mom). They gave it to me when I graduated high school in 1982. In 1983 I did a comprehensive restoration on it myself (that's the paint job you see in the picture, which was taken in about 1998-?). After 22 years it does indeed need a complete pro job on it. Unfortunately that's way out of my budget right now. But yes, I do plan on keeping it forever, and if I win the lottery the first thing I will do is drive it to a good restoration shop and tell them to make it like new.
