Does ASM suck?

Okay I have an odd question. You know the Active stability Management option? It's always on so I never mess with things that are on and just basically leave them default. But the thing is when I got the 07 GTR and race with it I thought to myself I SUCK with this car because I would always...ALWAYS spin out for some reason on turns even on daytona. Even slight tiny movements would send me and my car into a wall. Me being an amateur and all just shrugged and thought "hm I must can't handle awds."

But today I discovered with ASM off I could actually drive the car and not only that but get better lap times. I'm not asking if I'm good or not but I want to understand how this works and why I couldn't use it to help me but cause disadvantages.
 
ASM will masively lower your cornering speed, its really to help begginers get used to a difficult car but you can run much faster without it. It will ultimately make the car more stable but at the expense of all other handling characteristics it will cut the the trottle to help keep the car in check, you tend not to notice it to much but its very apparent in lap times. The car feels dead and boring to drive with it on to me, TCS also doesn;t help much as you can go quicker without it. The only driver AID that can make you faster is ABS when used in moderation.
 
I found that after watching my younger brother play with ASM it was impossible for him to spin out.
I haven't used scince the my first race on the japanese demo.
 
You're seeing the benefits of faster lap times now because you have better car control. However, once you hone your driving skills, you begin to realize you can control your car just as effectively with ASM off, at which point your lap times improve further because you don't have a driving aid slowing you down.

And yes, only ABS is really much use. TCS has a place when taming some setups that wheelspin even with very gentle throttle control. TCS may prove to be a bit useful in Prologue, since it's been suggested that it has been fixed to more accurately model real car setups, and without simply killing lap times.

I need to ask... how can you spin out at all with ASM on? It specifically stops the car spinning out by killing the throttle and applying the brakes. Just curious?

its possible to spin the car with ASM on in some cars becuasing killing the throotle mid turn can be disatrous in some cars ie. Ford GT or when you drop a tire off the track even with ASM on you can still spin out.
 
Amazing is that almost 99% of top-times on Rankings Professional leaderboards are topped with ASM ON, as well as there are majority of drivers who drive with ASM ON in online racing.

After I foud out that, I have totally lost my intrest in competing and have lost my intrest in game in general.

ASM ON should be banned out from Professional venues in total because it's plain stupid, period.

It's my my pet hate on-line, because i've had cars slam into me at angles you know would cause them to spin out, yet they drive on regardless.
And if wasn't to be banned on professional then I would like to see a simulation difficulty that switches it off.

Can you point out examples of that? As far as I can tell, most, if not all, the very best times are set with ASM off. I never use ASM and do have some top 50 times to my name in Pro mode.

For me at least, driving with ASM on is annoying and makes the car feel sluggish and underpowered.

I don't want to call anyones names, but my friend from GTSurgeons forum contacted some of the most famous TOP10 holders and they've all confirmed they drive with ASM ON, no exceptions.

Also, many drivers reported about people who drive online races with ASM, which I find as a main reason why I used to get spun-out in duels, while other cars survived miraculosly.

That knowledge totally killed my wish to drive in all online modes, since I do not want to drive with ASM ON. Even worse, as I always drive with ABS OFF, so I am practicaly a shooting pidgeon for all others outhere.

I would also vote to make ABS OFF mandatory in professional venues, because difference between ABS 1 and ABS 0 is drastical, but whatever - it's my personal crusade that noone should relly care about.

Oh no, I and probably a lot others agree with that amar. More restrictions on the events would be a lot better, especially ASM. I always wanted to race online without ABS, but its such a huge disadvantage that I cannot if I want half a chance.
Once again, I think we have to "wait for private rooms".

It would be nice if PD added such restrictions now though, I'm sure we may see a drastic decrease in punters. They only have to apply it for the Pro events, the beginner and intermediate events could still have ASM and ABS as up to the player.

And to answer the thread title, yes, ASM sucks, a lot! Even new players to Gran Turismo instantly start driving much faster without ASM! Its the first thing I say to people when they ask how win in Gran Turismo. ASM takes more away from the car's character than any other aid.
 
I found that ASM made the GTR handle really badly.

It's almost as if it is a bug with a combination of driving aids switched on, in the gtr, will make the car handle relaly bad.

I didn't have this problem with any car until I bought the GTR and just couldn't get it round even simple corners. Turning it off instantly fixed the problem!

Wow, I find that incredible to be honest. :crazy: I just tried out the 599 (which is one of my favorites to race online) on Time Trial with ASM on and, for me at least, it became almost completely undriveable. I couldn't stay out of the sand... front end sliding all over the place while the ASM doesn't let me put the power on correctly to get the back end out to compensate for understeer. Its a disaster.

I can honestly say I never use ASM and after that llittle episode, I never will. I have to admit to using ABS 1 though. As I said earlier somewhere, there's no feedback from the pedal so my braking is ****e without ABS.

Disappointing that the top time setters use ASM but it still baffles me as to how... :dunce:

Edit - I shouldn't take that as reason not to race online though. As I said, I never use ASM but I am still fairly competitive online on a good day (when I'm not in the F40... ahem.)
 
I found turning ASM reduced my lap times by a lot in fwd/4wd cars, I haven't tried it with any of the faster rwd cars, but I assumed it would be the same. To drive quickly with ASM on requires a completely different driving style than with it off (much the same as TC).

With that said, it is certainly annoying driving with neither on and getting punted all over the shop by drivers with both on (especially the first corner of suzuka).
 
I never have, never do and never will use ASM. The claim that many of the top times on time trials are done with ASM surprises me, because I don't think it's true. You can look at every one of the top 100's stats and what they use and although I've seen some people using auto transmission high up the leaderboards, never seen someone using ASM.

Oops, wait a minute here, maybe my mistake.

Correct me if I&m wrong, but I'm talking about Active Steering Management and NOT Active Stability Management.

You can set and see "Stability" in race-options, but you can't see if someoone is using "Steering" because it's in the games options and it's listed under wheel/controller options.

All my points waere made regarding the Steering, not Stability Manager. So, just to clear the perspective here.

What in the heck is "Active Steering Management"???? <i>The</i> ASM in the game that everyone talks about is "Active Stability Management", which is the only acronym of ASM that appears in the game. Not sure what you are talking about, unless you are referring to force feedback on a wheel....which is something else entirely.

It's an option along with Transmission, ASM and TC in the menu before the start of the race.

I haven't tried Active Steering Management before, supposedly on mild it does help - someone suggested it for the M3 Eiger offline time trial.

I can see people's confusion here, Active Steering Management should have a different acronym than ASM, but I don't know what it is.
 
Aah, now we gets it... Active Steering for Force Feedback wheels. :)

No I never use that either; I want to decide where the car goes on my own thank you. I don't need the game deciding for me. Again I find it surprising that the top time setters use this feature since it adds a link in the chain between car and driver; something a racing driver doesn't want.
 
I was talking about ACTIVE STERING and all my claims regarding times on leaderboards are in connection with ACTIVE STEERING management. It's assist I do care about.

On the other hand, STABILITY management is something I do not care about at all, since it can't improve lap times or anything else - it can only help to those that can't countersteer properly.

If I made confusion here, my appologies. Since I'm totaly pissed about Active Stering these days, I was thinking we're talking about it. If not, sorry to bother all of you.
 
Yeah, I just answered that point as well. Its a feature I would definitely consider a cheat, particularly in online competition.
 
Thats really dissapointing to hear, that the only way to beat them is to equip it to help you? an aid that makes you faster shouldn't be allowed, particularly in proffesional physics mode, with the possible acception to ABS because its hard to determine whether it helps you or not as it depends on the track and therefore should be treated as another setting that you have to fine tune in your setup to find the best results.
 
Active steering is not ASM, no where in GT5P is it called ASM or has management attached to the name.
I have had (and probably still do, haven't checking in a while) quite a few first place positions in the online rankings and I don't have active steering set. I only tried active steer back in the GT5P demo and didn't like it, I don't see how it would make me any faster.

Anyway this was not what the original poster is talking about. I never use ASM as it really does slow good drivers down, not too long ago I bought some car and forgot to turn to turn off ASM, boy what a mess ASM makes of the drivability.
 
I really can't do with out ASM at the moment, and I am struggling to see how I can ever acheive a quicker lap time not having it on. I have run countless laps of tracks trying to improve my times with out it on, and I just aren't beating the alternative.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it my controller? or could it be just simply down to ability and more practice?
 
Well i am in the top ten in a fair few of the online rankings, and use no driving aids at all other than ABS @ 1, Also using a DS3 as i dont have a G25. yet :sly:

Active steering is not for me.

Active steering = You suck at driving. Maybe Need for speed is more suited to these people.

The GTP welcomes any driver of any skill level here, not just those who think, or are confirmed as being good drivers. We honestly don't need this sort of attitude here.
