is the career structure of GT6 convincing?

I simply think PD didn't put enough thought or effort into GT6. I have been playing GT5 and having more actual fun than GT6. I stayed logged in to maintain my 200 % login. I've already run the new seasonals and I sincerely despise these 3 lap races. I've won them all on first attempt. I've even run both the Intermediate and Expert many times. But that does nothing compared to the fun you can have with hybrids in GT5. Just building a hybrid is fun in and of itself. I know many people here don't like the hybrids but to each their own. If PD would just come through with the long awaited Course Maker I'd be satisfied. Give us 5 lap races since the seasonals are now 1 month long. I'd also like to go back to paint chips instead of crappy prize cars. Maybe if the prize cars were something worth having it would be different. I don't plan on buying a PS4 until there is a GT7 and it has been out long enough to deem spending the money on either.

What?!?!

A critical thinking man who knows how to think for himself and waits until value is shown?!

Sir that is a danger to that GT $$$ to PD. ;)

Wow...it finally happened. Gran Turismo imploded and went to nothing but a public-joke topic.
Thumbs up, PD for a 11/10 failure. ;)

You can have 50 premium cars sitting on the grid for a standing start in single player if you like. What you can't have is 16 premiums + weather or racing on dirt + a reasonable frame rate. Most of us have seen the Digital Foundry video tests of GT6's frame rate, with it dipping into the 30's with only 1 or 2 cars on screen while racing in the rain or in the dirt. With 16 cars you might be into the single digits with the frame rate.

This is more because they chose to throw the GT7 rendering engine into GT6, for what purpose I know not. It looked kind of worthwhile in the promos, but they had to strip everything away so....buh, why bother? Have you ever seen wonderfully big bursts of autumn leaves kick up at Autumn Ring like in the promo shots? I haven't.

Personally, I think that they should have focused on the game play rather than the tech. GT5 was already on the limits. Leave the new tech for the new system and refine the gameplay in the sequel. That has always been the best way to do a franchise.

What you can't have is 16 premiums + weather or racing on dirt + a reasonable frame rate.

Actually, given the limits that GT has to work within (a track, a very closed environment, very tight control over where the player can and cannot go, etc) They could do plenty more. GT5P is a better example of what they could have been working with. They use LOD cars very effectively as well as LOD on the effects and even on the physics on other cars as seen from your car.

(LOD is Level Of Detail, for those that have not heard this term before)

The caveat is IF they had stayed with the old renderer.

However, different disciplines in gaming see themselves as having the most importance.

Coders think that tech is most important. Artists think that visuals are most important. Game Designers think that game play is most important.

I come from the Game Design track. Kaz comes from the Art track. I would have sacrificed dynamic lighting and the completely RIDICULOUSLY USELESS astronomical sky model in favour of the GT5P rendered and better game structure, co-op single player, and a more solid PP system.

I mean, we have quick match, so we could have had the option to play the single player events as multiplayer (Bots and people together).

It is the Columbo of game modes... "Just one more thing."

Did it convince you to complete it? Pass those licence things. Get all the flashy star doodahs... It did me.

If it were realistic... you would need to repair cars and maintain them. It is a silly game mode,

But like the thing is it's The Real Driving Simulator. The game series is supposed to have realistic elements or at least realistic based structure. For example like it doesn't need to be like Project Cars. The reason why people complain about career mode in GT6 is mostly because of the way it was structured. It fails to deliver what GT3 and GT4 delivered and those games were on PS2 by the same team with less staff at that. It's a mind screw up that it has less of a convincing career mode compared to GT5. (Don't think I'm a basher. Believe it or not I still play the game)

I dont think people want too much realism.

Of course everyone wants car damage. If GT7 doesnt have it, I think there will be some blowback. Hell, only arcade racers have no damage (pretty sure Driveclub has no damage).

Damage is something you manage.

Thing is Microsoft used to have it that you had to pay for damage to your car so if you really screwed up it but you won, the damage nullified your winnings!

This mechanic is long gone. I personally think we will see damage in GT7 but I dont think you'll ever had to pay to fix it.

People expect a race to be 3 laps and you win and you get cash and paint swabs and a free car and all the balloons falling from the ceiling.

Its a reflection of what people expect in their gaming these days.

There's damage in Driveclub although it's only cosmetic. Damage in Driveclub does hurt your winnings each time you crash into a barrier or into other cars on track. You get good points if you drive clean in that game.

I think damage you have to pay for must come in GT, even If it's just cosmetic. Funny enough in the GT Auto preview images right before the GT6 released, it showed an option for you to repair your damaged car but was sadly removed.

I do agree with your sentiments of what people expect in gaming now though.
Another reason why I enjoy Driveclub is because it doesn't so mucj follow that reflection and can be unforgiving, not Pcars unforgiving though.

With 1200 cars they need to give some freedom to the user. A custom event editor that reward user with credits would have been easy to add and would have keept most of the people quiet. Their old mentality "it's my game you must play the way I want" can't work anymore. We are no longer in 1998.

Fixed for you. Their old mentality was correct. GT1,2 and 3 were sandbox games. GT4,5 and 6 are the ones that have restrictions on them. That's a more modern phenomenon.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about, I just love doing 3 lap races while starting from the back row over and over again.

The fact that every race is limited by constant PP and tyre restrictions also makes me the happiest rabbit chaser alive.

This is what just happen'd.

By realistic, people generally mean something more meaningful and convincing. I completed it for the sake of completing it and because, at the time, I needed the credits. A well executed single player would have you going back again and again because it's fun. GT6 single player is most definitely NOT fun. I never ran the Sunday Cup more than once. I don't recall any event that I ran more than once. That's poor design.

What could have improved it (easily)?

1 - Go back to the GT1 method of single player. Allow for qualifying and have cars of varying PP levels actually race for the win. Since they don't want to add a better way to adjust difficulty, then set the AI car difficulty based on the qualifying time.

2 - Do a better job of hiding the rubber band. This has been beaten to death, but if they employed someone who had experience implementing enemy AI into a game (as in a game designer, not a coder), they'd get more bang for their buck. I've said it before, the AI has the tools to be presented better, but that takes talent and GT6 was phoned in. You can say "no" to rubber bands, but we all do it as real drivers. I push hard to get to the front. If I have a good lead, I back off to stay on track. THAT is what the AI in GT6 should do. B-spec can do it, so the A-spec AI can do it too.

3 - Co-op, as I mentioned above. Give the player the choice to race against only AI cars or against a mix. This wouldn't have been difficult to implement at all.

4 - For street car events, let the AI used tuned cars when tuned cars are allowed for the player. They don't have to be fully tuned,. but weight reduced with tuned parts should be a must.

5 - Have tuning limitations for the player. Some events might force only stock weight, or only Level 1 weight, or no power upgrades, etc.

6 - Have leader board for race finish times against your friends. They have that in Sierra time rally. Give me a small goal to shoot for once the gold cup is won.

7 - THIS ONE ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!! They have an AI with the capacity to learn. Why not have persistent AI drivers? AI drivers that get better with every race, that grow and learn as you grow and learn? AI drivers that keep increasing their level over time. The more you play single player, the better they'd get. WHY IS THIS NOT IMPLEMENTED?? WHY??? It's a SLAM DUNK, LOW HANGING FRUIT WIN! Can you imagine? You'd come to learn the crappy drivers from the good ones. As you move up in single player challenge difficulty, more challenging AI get introduced and they can then compete in the earlier races. ANY game designer worth his pay check would have crucified himself to make this a reality.....but what we got was mediocrity.

It would probably only appeal to a relatively small part of the player base, but how about an entire co-op career mode? Play with X number of friends against the AI in a full or mini-career mode. Sort of an online/offline mode.

GT3 had the best career mode of the whole series. You had races that were locked by license level, an adjustable AI that rewarded you for racing against more capable AI, and a top tier of events that wouldn't unlock until you completed every other event in the game. As far as an epic career mode goes, look no further than Tokyo Extreme Racer: Kaido Battle 2. Was always such fun to seek out sponsorship tests in an attempt to acquire custom parts for my car. Things that you couldnt buy in a tune shop, or even cars that were fully tuned. And like in the real world, to earn the extra money, you needed to earn sponsorship.
Almost every other racing game out there has a believable career.in order to progress to C, you must first do A and B in order.
P.S.Kaido Battle 2 had some of the most epic courses, and all are roads in Japan.

Classy profile picture I've seen so far all day. :sly:

Edit: Also awesome discussions within this thread and I mean everyone. :D

The career system reminds me of an android game.

Remember when Kaz said his favourite games outside of GT were Bad Piggies and Angry Birds? He said he played them on the train to work or something like that. I hope he doesn't take too much inspiration from their structure for a Gran Turismo game, but it seems like he has already. Good grief.

Man I forgot about that! You're right!

Totally doable. All the pieces are in place for this to happen. It would take minimal effort.

When you start the race you choose A-spec. A-spec Co-Op (this would be with friends) and A-spec Online (This would be like Quick Match). It would all use the Quick Match system with the events from the single player.

How many people would be interested in "single player" then? I would be. Then I wouldn't care so much about the structure, although I would like to see some of the other suggestions implemented.

Quite likely. Kaz has left the building and someone else needs to take the reigns of this game if it's going to live up to its potential. The current caretakers have phoned in features for a while and GT6 is the pinnacle of their apathy.

I face GT6 modes not as a career mode, because races are flimsy. Cars normally are completely different from each other in many categories.

I've been thinking about the gran turismo career mode recently and here are some of my thoughts:

  1. Bring back quali
  2. Make the races more dynamic (different set of tracks every time you do a championship)
  3. Full enduro races (with the option to reduce race length to a % for those that don't want to do full races)

It's not perfect, but I feel like it's executed better than in FM6 because you have to work for it a lot more. In FM6, they keep throwing cars and money at you at such a ridiculous rate that it really takes away from the progression of the career.
