I recently buy a PS3 and GT5 of course. Big fan since GT2, but only played a bit of GT4 and GT5 at a friend's house.

Now I got it, put it along my HD TV, via HDMI cable in. Started it up. And I was baffled...

The edges of the cars look very bad, and specially the rims. On the track, the lines of the circuit look square-ish, as if there's not antialiasing at all. At times, it's painfully horrible.

I had not noticed this in my friend's place when I went there, but it's been a long long time and I don't really remember. So that's my question, does it look like this for you guys too?

Possibly you have forget to setup ps3 settings properly from xmb menu. Check your settings from xmb (menu of ps3 is called xmb).
Graphics looks like 572 normal tv resolution, not 1080.

It could be down to differences in the post processing your TV has compared to your friends. His TV itself could be smoothing the image a bit.

Maybe you have post processing enabled on the tv, disable edge enhancement, sharpness or any other similar features. Also make sure you have the correct picture size - 1 to 1 fit or just scan on some tv, not zoom or 16x9 or 4x3.

@OP

Between switching from TV to TV, no matter if both of them run HDMI 1080p you always have to do the following.

1. Turn off your PS3

2. Press and hold the power button till you hear the second beep.
(You will hear a first beep tp indicate the system has turned on. Then a second beep which means video settings have been reset)

3. Set up the PS3's video settings, then try GT5 again.

Why would you do that if they were both running the same resolution?

I have no clue. I personally have had this sane problem before.

What I posted above will solve the problem on start up.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll try to reset the settings as detailed.

My TV is a Samsung UN32EH5000. Maybe some of you have it, or know it, and could guide me about that aswell?

cheers !

I have a Samsung LCD tv, there should be sharpness, edge enhancement -under detailed settings, be sure to disable these, set sharpness to 0 ( you can increase it until you like the result - but it might increase input lag ). Disable DNR as well, and make sure picture size is just scan. If your tv has motion features for movie, disable it too.

Lowering the sharpness and contrast should help a little. The sharpness should might matter more.

For better gameplay, or when you're driving on the track, change the brightness settings in the Pause menu. Usually it is better to change it there than always on your TV a lot of the time.

I tried lowering sharpness (it's in 0 in fact) and contrast, I had already selected 1080p in the xmb menu too.

I just reseted the settings as pointed out and it looks the same. The gap between the doors and hood for instance, always look pixelated. Specially the rims. While approaching a corner, too, you see the edges of the track far from you and it's all rough and not very nice...

I have a higher quality TV (Samsung) that I've played GT5 on, but I prefer playing it on my Vizio. I remember it looking worse, but with smoother gameplay, than the Vizio.

This might seem like a dumb question, but what, or how many, tracks have you used? Try the Toscana dirt track and maybe even the Course Maker one.

Those tracks are worse for me. I always just thought that's how they were. Do other people have better resolution on those tracks?!
@OP, I've tried every trick and setting, include the recommended ones, and my experience is the same as yours. I gave up. I just got used to it, but sometimes it bothers me that rushed, hack games like Shift2 look better than GT.

Also, turn on the game mode - this will stop motion plus (higher framerate, but higher input lag too)

Toscana looks annoying bright in the day, the overlap into night is strange, but when you're driving at night, it looks good for me. I picked that one because it has both gravel and tarmac versions plus time change. I should have used a second example like the SHORT Track, Eiger Nordwand - with and without weather. It slipped my mind.

Well, I tried it almost everywhere. Suzuka, Le Mans...

What confuses me is that it's not all the lines that look that rubbish. I mean, the car looks fine, except the panel gaps and the rims. The tracks look fine too, except the white lines that are far from you... I'll try to get more pictures once I get home.

that is definately not how it should look like.

I guess I bought a rubbish TV then. Which is annoying... Does the HDMI cable has anything to do with it? maybe it's not good... doubt it, but just guessing.

I have Samsung UN32EH5006 which is later model than yours. Looking at your http://i40.tinypic.com/316riud.jpg it seems that it has red in it which means to me it has to much tint. Press on menu button Go to picture mode settings for Tint (G/R) it should be on G50 R50 and see what it is. My Samsung is perfect with a PS3 and GT5.

I have a Sony Bravia and don't have this problem at all. Maybe it's something to do with samsung TVs

I'm totally out of ideas...

1: Smash old TV
2: Record yourself smashing old tv ( If you haven't already smashed it that is)
3: Let us laugh at the video of you smashing old TV
4: Get new TV

..But in all seriousness, it looks like something between the PS3 and TV is not processing, you should try a new or different HDMI cable.

Questions:
1: Which PS3 model do you have? Fat, Slim, Super Slim?
2: Have you noticed this on other games?

but... but... IT'S TWO WEEKS OOOOOLD :nervous:

I got the SuperSlim. I only got 3 games (GT5, Uncharted 3 and PES 2013). I noticed the rubbish edges in PES, but I've not really played anything as extensively as GT5.

I asked the Sony Store guy for an HDMI cable when I bought the PS3 and he gave me a rather long cable from Sony. I'll try to get a different one...

I think game mode lowers the input lag.
What he wrote in brackets was refering to interpolation and not the game mode.

I have a UE32C5100, but sadly tinypic is blocked at work. Don't ask me why, youtube, facebook, etc, is not blocked at all.

Did you try to reset the video settings of your TV?

How big is your tv? Because you may want to go with 1080p.

I play at 720p in a 32 inch tv (Sony Bravia, Sony HDMi cable and Slim 160GB PS3). I do get these white jagged edges in some cars during certain circumstances like weather and time change. If I set my tv and PS3 at 1080p this improves very slightly but in exchange of screen tearing and "image jumping" (Low frame-rate?) so it's not really worth it.

I honestly prefer the slightly jagged edges (personally they don't bother me nor I notice them) with a smooth running picture. My TV isn't that big anyway, so definition differences between 720p and 1080p are barely noticeable if not noticeable at all. I can still clearly read all the gauge's info in most cars and see all the little things with sharp crisp detail.

TIP: I just read you have a very long HDMi cable. Although this might sound stupid, try getting a short one. I worked for certain electronics company and we always noticed that the longer cables sometimes gave slight image problems. However that was way back with the old HDMi cables.

But make sure you got all the definition options set correctly in your PS3 and also the tv first.

32 inches too. I had the same idea about the long cable, that's why I pointed it out...

Thanks everyone for all the replies! massive help ! it's a very warm welcome for me to this community !

I'll keep trying... I'll try to post more pictures when I get home.

Looks more like your TV settings are screwed.

Following:
- Select the source for your PS3 (HDMI 1,2,etc)
- MENU (on remote control)
- SETUP
1. General - Game Mode - On
- PICTURE
2. Picture Reset - Ok
3. Advanced Settings - Edge Enhancement - Off
4. Dynamic Contrast - Off
5. Sharpness - Turn it down! I personally have it at 20 (50 is default)
6. Contrast - Default was 95, I turned it down to 84
After doing the steps above:
Especially important was to set HDMI Black Level under Picture Options to Normal. By default it's set to low and that ruins the details of dark spots. Don't confuse it with other black level settings (there are tons of them). To counter the relatively bright picture I reduced the brightness a little (not backlight).

EDIT: Oh and set Colour Space under Advanced Settings to Auto and not Native.

---

EDIT2:
If you want to improve picture quality, you should try to adjust the settings a little.
People are normally using "Movie" mode with Colour Tone at Warm 2 (default for movie) for calibration on Samsungs. If you turn game mode on, it will be locked to Standard. That's no problem, because Movie is just a settings preset. Simply write down the settings of the Movie mode and then apply them to the standard profile after doing all steps I already listed at the beginning of this post. Then start doing what they did.
Eh5000 models seem to lack blue luminance if set to Warm 2 though, I'd stick with Warm 1 if you don't want to bother with adjusting white levels.

EDIT3: Turn MPEG-/Digital Noise Filter down to off or at least low (both found under Picture Options).

EDIT4: Point 1-4 must not be changed, 5-6 aka sharpness and contrast can be adjusted the way you like. Especially Sharpness should be decreased.
