Does the Driving Force GT HAVE to be attached to a table?

I remember having an old PC wheel that I used to drive for Streets of Sim City.
It didn't have to clasp to a table or whatever (which I see on the DFGT). It pushed down into the chair by the weight of your legs which were put over plastic "wings" which poked out of the side.

I want to be able to simply move a chair into my room and be ready. I don't want to have to clasp it to a table.

:nervous: Halp?

Not a prayer without a table/solid mounting spot. Even one of those portable standing trays makes it loose and a pain in the butt to use.

Check on the Logitech website. They have a laprest attachment that isn't very expensive. They might well have other ones now. I haven't looked for a while.

It can jump out of your hands if you're not careful... you may adjust the feed back but works great if clamped to something

To the OP, you are better off purchasing a wheel that does not have force feedback. However I'm not sure which ones on the market will work with the PS3 and GT5.

Darn it. If only you could reverse the clasps so you can clasp it to the chair. That'd solve a plethora of problems.

Of course then you'd need to be able to adjust the height.

There's a weird little platform thing you can buy that you sit on one half of it and it stems up between your thighs to a platform you can attach the wheel to.

Methinks that if you're going to wedge out all that moolah on a toy*, you might as well nail it to a proper platform.

I cut the front of my car off and mounted mine to the dashboard.

Sure makes getting to work a lot trickier.

*don't rise to it....

A table is the only way to go... I built one for my DFGT and it works like a champ. I keep forgetting to install the cupholder though...

I use Logitech Driving Force PRO with Lap attachment. No problem with driving the cars and gaining experience in the game but when it comes to GT academy....you have to find something solid to screw your wheel to it if you want to get a good times. So, lap attachment is good for playing but if you want to take it seriously....screw it to the heavy table. Imagine driving RedBull car with lap attachment in the endurance races...I did that and I was completely exhausted. Still possible to get times below 54 sec on Tsukuba in my absolutely tuned FD3S :P

Well, I suppose there's really no way I'm getting a wheel, then. My only hope is that PD eventually adds SIXAXIS steering.

Thanks anyways, guys.

Why not? Space constraints? I bought a TV-tray type table at Target for $8 and thats what I've been using since GT5 came out. I leave the wheel attached to it and it folds up and slides under my bed. It's not the most solid solution in the world but it works.

Hey, the DFW is your answer:

I'm in a similar boat, a small rented place that I can't justify a big setup with pedals in. It's not in the same league as the GT, but it's way more immersive than a controller. Takes up no room, plug it in pop it on your lap and away.
I hear it has been discontinued, but there's still bound to be some knocking around - I only got mine in Jan. Cheap, too.

I started with that wheel, and no offense, but it's terrible compared to the DFGT. Mine got loose just playing Prologue. The force feedback is really weak and the wireless part kept cutting out at the worst times and you'll lose all control.

The best answer to a space constrained living room, or for anybody that cares about keeping a space tidy when they aren't playing GT5, is a Wheel Stand Pro or something similar. I love mine, and it really helps get the most out of the wheel, and it folds up and goes in a closet when I'm not using it.

The throttle and brake are the paddles and they move with the wheel, so it's easy. I agree that the DFW is nowhere near as good as the GT (and said as much), but I've never had any issue with the wireless cutting out.
It's not for serious sim enthusiasts I grant you, but for a casual gamer who wants something better than a controller and a clutter free life it's OK.

I really recommend the wheelstand pro...a really well designed and well built piece of kit designed by a bunch of engineer gamers who wanted the best from their logitech steering wheels...it depends on the wheel...but you are looking at £100 for the stand including delivery...the delivery and customer service is amazing btw...that's £200 for stand and GT Driving force....easy to put away..so won't upset the bank manager or the missus too much..

I started off with a Workmate since I already had one... but it didn't go well with the pedals so I made the table.

Think it depends on the quality of the workmate...I've got the cheap-ass one and there's plenty of room for my legs and feet (I'm six foot two with size 13 feet!). I think the better workmate's got more ironmongery in the way.

Try getting the wheel stand pro, i had mine mounted to an old computer table that i modified heavily, then i found the WSP, and was in total shock at how great it was, worth the money, i saw a GTplanet review of it somewhere and then i just ordered it.

It's highly recommendable, and it's a total different experience compared to having it on your lab, always a good thought to think about how much you spent on the wheels and what you get from it by placing it on something proper.

Having that thing strapped to the chair would annoy the crap out of me. I need to stand up and sit back down way too much for that to be at all convenient. I usually play from my sofa, anyway, so there's nowhere good to attach it.
