Yeah. The city is 7000 feet up and the mountains are up to 13000 feet. We were probably around 9500-10000 feet up there, in January.

Although the last few years haven't been as snowy due to the drought. When I lived up there I got snowed in and missed a plane to Chicago. I shovelled my car out, went up to get my bags, came back down only to find I'd been plowed in again :banghead:

It's cool because two hours away it's in the sixties... or warmer.:D You can drive into Phoenix with snow packed in your wheel wells and the windows down.

Shows what I know about Arizona. I thought Flagstaff had a spot in the middle of the desert.

I have a Husky/Border collie. her name is Cleo(patra). I can't find a pic of her right now...and my dad has the digicam at his work.

No dogs here. Just 9 parrots.

My moter-in-law raises seeing eye dogs now that she's retired.

Here is a pic of the latest one "Sardi"

The tough part about raising a seeing-eye dog must be the fact that you have to trainthe dog at many public places, and get it used to the day-to-day stuff that us humans do. And that includes being surrounded by kids, all wanting to "pet the doggie", and people who feel the need to make noises at it.

It's gotta be a tough job for the dog, but where would the blind be with out them?

The seeing eye dog training is incredible. Constant socialization, and consistent socialization. I've seen these dogs put up with amazing incidents. But one thing that really surprises me is how regular people react to the dogs. Mothers dragging their kids away from teh dog like it is going to attack them. Almost to the point that people are afraid of the dog.

I've heard people say "It's inhumane to subject an animal to that type of training. Never letting the dog be itself." Or "that's so cruel to force a dog to behave that way."

It would really surprise you what some people think of seeing eye dogs.

Of course, that's not everybody. Only a sample of what a few people I've seen say.

People who think that are ignorant fools. If that line of reasoning was valid it would be correct to say "It's inhumane to subject an animal to that type of training. Never letting it be itself" regarding me, right now, at work. Seeing eye dogs, and service dogs in general are the happiest, most fulfilled dogs in the world. Their bond with their owner is much more so than any common dog owner. Dogs live for praise and approval. There is no better place for a dog than serving it's master; it makes them happier than anything... provided the master praises and loves the dog. It's really a beautiful thing and it just pisses me off to hear that people could have such a twisted understanding of domestic animals.

Their dogs are the ones you see splattered on the side of the highway, roaming around intersections, biting strangers, and barking all the live-long day :irked:

Exactly, mile. My father and I found a live dog in the middle of a crowded street on the way to school. it had been hit and the people that hit it didn't give two ****s. Apparently, the owners didn't care either. The dof had a broken neck and died in the back of the truck on the way to the nearest vet. :(

Nothing can ruin a day more than seeing a stray dog. You basically have two choices: get the dog and rescue it, or ignore it and block it out. But for me, thinking about a poor, panicky, disoriented dog roaming around an intersection with no comprehension of "road" or "car" just makes me crazy.

The human race has a responsibility to these animals. We created them, or at the very least derived them, for our use, enjoyment, and companionship. It's our duty to take care of, protect, and love them.

I hate that, too - on more than one occaision I've picked up stray dogs on the street, especially if it's cold, or later at night. One time I missed a long flight because of it.

Here is my dog. Toy Poodle, Apricot. We're going to try and get another one in black soon. :)
