If it isn't a sport, what else could it possibly be.

hob·by
n. pl. hob·bies
An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure

The problem with this is that a sport can be a hobby and a hobby can be a sport.

Example: If you play basketball with some buddies on the weekends, you could say that basketball was a hobby of yours. It doesn't make it any less of a sport though.

By definition alone, drifting is a sport.

Sport - Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

If you'd like to be even more clear, you could call it a motorsport. It certainly involves as much physical activity as say...drag racing (which is referred to as a motorsport).

To be honest. I could care less what you call it. If you think it's a hobby, that's fine. You have the right to your opinion. Just don't go around preaching about how it's not a sport or it will end up being just like the FF-Sliding thread - a pointless waste of time.

Agreed. Thus, why I made this thread. To ask the opinions of others.
But I will say, drifting is never governed in my eyes, and there is only one way to engage in it competetively.

Drag racing is a sport. Examples of motorsports would be NASCAR, F1, JGTC, etc....
There is a starting line and a finish line. Whoever gets to the finish line first, wins.
That's what makes drag racing a sport. It's racing.
You have a material objective.

Just like golf has a hole, and football (soccer) has a net.
In a sport, you have an objective and things attempting to thwart your efforts to achieve it.

Things like figure skating and D1 Grand Prix have judges that rate you on your technique in performing the trick you are attempting. After everyone has been rated, the ratings are compared. Where's the "sport" in that?

This is my opinion. Disagree all you want. It will not change.

You just explained why it is a sport. Whether you like it or not, figure skating is an official sport, so by that logic, drifting is also a sport. I mean Ethix just explained beautifully, why it is considered a sport, but once again, you just type before you read............ ;)

If it's not governed, how can there be competition?

From Webster:
Main Entry: sport
Function: noun
1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION

That is all! There are more elaborate definitions, of course, but that is the fundamental one that defines the scope of "sport." As Ethix said, just because drifting is a hobby doesn't mean it isn't a sport.

Then why did you start this thread? Seems to me you are more interested in telling us your opinion than in hearing ours.

At this time, I don't know if you can consider it a sport yet, there isn't a defined set of rules for drifting yet, nothing concrete and written in a manual. The judging is more based on taste and what the judges like, not really looking at replays and anaylsing speed, opposite lock angle, or how close you are to the wall. These are just the few I've read about, but again the rules haven't been amended into some drift sport bible yet.

I guess that could be true in a most technical sense, but is popularity a requisite for sport? Just because it's not mainstream here in the States, we don't have a very good idea of what exactly is considered 'drifting.' This is evident by the argument we just had about whether FF can drift or not (please don't start on this...) However in Japan, it has been around for a while. I'm sure someone from Japan would beg to differ that it was a sport in every sense of the word.

Is there a "figure skating bible"? Do judges judge you on how high you get into the air and how many twirls you do? No, they judge your style and execution, just like drifting.

Exactly...... ;)

I am aware of how they judge drifting in D1. I was using figure skating as an example, simply because I don't feel that it is a 'sport' either. It's just comparing one's ability to not screw up with everyone else's ability.

It wasn't my plan to argue about this.

I just wanted to hear what you guys had to say.

And that's what you're getting. Like I said before many people are adivant about this whole topic and it's a real controversial topic at that.

You already know how I feel about it

(all cars all techniques:lol: ) Sorry guys, inside joke.

But many people don't share mine and your beliefs.

I guess we're just special like that.

Well, for most of the people in here, it's a hobby. And for the two or three that actually drift in real life, then, it's still a hobby, because they aren't doing it to put food on the table, you know?

Even for me, it's a hobby, but when I open that new drift school in the Mid-west, it will definately be a pursuit of happiness.

A JEAH

What is a sport without universal rules.
Saying you drift against friends is like playing 'guns'.
You know what I'm talking about.
BANG! BANG! YOUR DEAD! NO I SHOT YOU FIRST!

If you wanted to drift against someone, you'd need a judge who knows the D1 judging system. Someone who isn't actually participating in the 'battle'.

Good luck finding someone to do something like that at their liesure..

Think back to old England. British gentlemen would go on large hunts for "sport". They were sportsmen. But was that really a sport by your mess up definition? No, but back in the day, that was THE sport. Drifting has competitions, it's a sport, deal with it, and go to sleep.

EDIT: Come to think of it, they still hunt the way they did way back when.

Since when? Do you have someone judging you when you skateboard? No, just like drifting. Just because you aren't scored like a competition doesn't mean you aren't drifting. Just because drifting isn't scored when done non-competitively, doesn't mean it isn't a sport.

P.S. - You usually don't need a judge to determine who has better skill. It's usually obvious. Even if one isn't better skill-wise, one will usually end up pulling a much nicer drift. The only time this becomes a problem is when you get stuck-up little punks who won't admit they lost.

A sport is usually associated with a game with rules and goals. There are skateboarding games that you can play that don't need judges. Games with specific rules and games that you can win or lose at.

What I don't understand is how you can consider drifting a sport if there are no rules, no competition, and no mutual objective?

The point is you're outnumbered. YOU are the minority. You will not win here, and your opinion will not be heard. Just give it up and take your opinions with you. This is pointless.

I'm pretty minute, considering I'm ONE PERSON holding my ground against EVERYONE ELSE.

One third of the people who voted feel that it's a hobby, and those people who feel that their ability will never reach a peak and start declining, and will never stop enjoying it for what it really is, never using it for their own social benefit.. those few will achieve true mastery.

The way you talk down at me shows your disrespect and I am certain you will never be successful at anything in your life.

I hope you all enjoy your "sport", as I will enjoy my "drifting" and we will see where your sport leads you.

By posting here and continuing this, I gain nothing.
My sole purpose with this was to filter out the fools from the artists.
I am done here.

Can we spot the keyword in that sentence?

I play basketball and football, do I expect that to take me anywhere? Of course not. I'm not talking down, I just think this entire conversation is stupid because it will go no where.

You would accuse us of being fools for calling drifting a sport? Are you all-knowing? Are you the drift king? After our last debate I just thought you were immature, now I think you're a fool. Why don't you bookmark this thread and revisit it in 1 year, and you will understand.

No, Ryen, you told me you weren't getting involved.

racing
n : the sport of engaging in contests of speed

This is becoming a war of literal meanings.
They wouldn't print this sh-t if it meant something else.

It's either a sport or a hobby. That is why there are only two options.

ENOUGH ALREADY.
