My question is : Is drifting in gt5 similar to real life or is it completely different? If I made a 240sx with the exact tune as Dai Yoshihara in gt5 would it have the same drifting characteristic.

And yes I have used the search option and have not found what I was looking for.

I actually made a thread with almost the same name as this, the search isn't the greatest on here. Just to answer and avoid hassle, it can, but tire selection is important.

In my opinion comfort hard tires are not very similar to the ones they use in formula d or d1gp (grip factor) comfort medium are more similar in my opinion.

It's similar but there are enough differences that I doubt you'd want to take the settings from in-game and try to apply them to real life. You might be able to take lessons and apply them in real life, but not actual hard numbers.

I agree on the tire physics, they are very wrong. I'm pretty sure none of these tires have any roll whatsoever, even comfort hard is as stiff as a rock. As soon as you touch the throttle or turn into a corner, you're sliding. That's not realistic at all.

I think if Polyphony added some sidewall flex to their tires (more so for the comfort tires, less so for the racing tires), things would be much improved.

It is quite a bit easier to drift in real life for me. And I'm no drift professional in real life. I've done a few competition runs on dry and wet. And I'm no professional drifter in GT5 but I can hold my own.

It's the (pardon my language) ass factor. In car you can feel the car sliding and you can feel the forces. In GT5 you can only use your eyes for movement on screen and a bit of info from the wheel. But that is not enough. And that is why it is so hard. But I must confess, that years of Gran Turismo drifting (from GT3 on) have definitely helped me to drift well in real life. Because my drift beginnings were much better than expected.

dont no ive drifted in a 200hp datsun and its harder than a gt5 datsun? could be that gt5 datsun has more power and you can change the supention setup ezer lol \^.^/

Gt5 is like real life drifting in the fact it requires a lot of practice and skill but to do in real life you need more courage. Gt5's similarities end with real life with tyres. If you could choose real tyre types and brands of tyre the game would be much better. They have rights to put the logos of some brands in the game (I.e. Michelin, Dunlop and others) so they have the ability to do so

Also the fact that drifting within GT5 you're supposed to have little to no front end grip when you need the total opposite in real life.

play live for speed, its so much better for learning techniques that you can use in real life, like steering techniques and what lines to take (mainly when following someone)

the biggest difference between going from a sim and real life are

1) cars in sims don't have issues unlike my pos 180sx haha

2) fear factor, confidence, ect, 1st few drift days i held back a fair bit tho i was still doing 1000x better then other people who just started, once i got my handbrake fixed and did some drifting with my brother my confidence went up heaps, could do tandems with him and not have to worry about him doing something stupid

3) getting used to the g forces, 1st drift day i did i found it kinda hard to have my feet in the right spot on some of the corners, had to learn how to hold my self in my set better

i have been drifting in live for speed for about 8 years, started with a momo then got a G25 when that came out. i started drifting irl at the end of last year and have done 7 practice days and a comp since then (i was in the highest class with some of Australia's best drifters)

most people are shocked when i tell them i learned how to drift on my computer

biggest thing holding me back are issues with my car, its a CA18DET 180sx with coilovers, a locked diff and thats pretty much it, on very good day it will make 200hp, atm im pulling out the engine to try to make it stop pissing out oil, replacing some bent suspension arms and putting a new computer in it so the power level isn't so all over the place (stock computers are epic fail and self tune which leads to issues when you try to run more boost)

well im glad i can drift a veyron, enzo & mclaren in 30 mins. then 300km/h crash them, then drift them again. no millions on my ego XD

I wish it was simulating real life, I'd be the next thingy ma-jig.

I'm backing up this guy. I play live for speed too, and for more or less the same amount of time.
IMO GT5 can help to "learn" basics of drifting but not much tho, Live for speed would be better as it is far more realistic regarding the tires (except when they get hot), the brakes (especially the e-brake).
So far I've only drifted one time in real life on some friend's car, and I didn't found it hard to do basic turns or even manji's.

I have to agree Live for speed is the only game I've ever played where I can do all the same things I do in my drift car. If you were relying on GT5 to learn techniques for drifting, you'll have a very hard time when it comes to real life, because a lot of the stuff you learned will not carry over to real life and will make you crash. I used to be a pro drifter and I find drifting in real life and LFS much easier than in GT5.
