Driving Aids On/Off Difference

Hi Everyone,

I've been playing the game with all the driving aids set to the default level (I never bothered to change the settings), but started running some test laps out of curiosity with all the aids OFF (set to zero).

I didn't notice much difference in the handling, braking, etc. of the cars compared to the all the aids at default level. The only cars I notice a significant difference are the very high powered cars like the C9...the wheels spin on acceleration even up the 3rd gear, which makes the car much more fun to drive. I also noticed that putting all the driving aids OFF for the C9 adds about 10 seconds to the ring time. (I can lap below 5:30, but with the aids off I lap about 10 seconds slower due to the lack of acceleration)

I was also thinking...Isn't it more realistic to keep the aids ON for the stock cars, since most modern stock cars have a bunch of driving aids in real life?? What do you guys think of the realism of the aids. I don't see a huge difference for the lower powered cars at all.

The ideal settings for optimum performance varies from car to car, the ASM I always kept 0 in GT3, if really screwed the cars handling, the TCS thoguh if your going for record laps is best being played about with so you can get proper control of the power while not slipping the wheels all the time, the default settings generally are too high for the best performance.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I would always turn TCS and ASM off.

ASM on cause the cars to understeer alot.... i like turning it off now although i used to leave it on in GT3
TCS i turn it on to level one for highpowered car so that i dun have to think how hard to push the button....

I agree...with the aids OFF, it seems that the cars understeer more.

Many players were complaining about unrealistic lap times for GT4. Do you guys think that the lap times become more realistic (especially at the Ring) with the aids OFF?

aids on completley ruin the driving experience if you're using a driving force pro... the game pretty much does evrything for you if you have them on.. it picks up the optimum speed for corners and won't let you accelerate if it was going to cause you understeer... i was playing arcade mode only because i didn't know how to turn them off in simulation mode.. but now that i do i'm back playing it, i found the most sim - like experience is S2 tyres and no aids... most sim like and most FUN by a long shot.

I think aids make it too easy. I have never used them and I will never use them. Even in real cars, if i was going to take one to a track, I would shut any type of aid off. In GT3 I was faster with aids, but I still think the game is better, as far as learning car control and exercising it, without them.

90% of the time I drive without aids. The only times I use them is if the car is extremely powerful, or is very, very tail happy. Usually just on race cars, though.

In GT3 I used to set the ASM to zero and then adjust the TCS to give the best quarter mile time. On some of the normal 4WD cars this meant turining it to zero. It just depended on the power of the car.

In GT4 running with default ASM and TCS settings on an Aston Martin V8 Vantage (full weight reduction and 724 HP if I remember correctly), I was getting the tyres to squeal in the first three gears. In fact it was rare on some tracks for the tyre to actually stop squealing for the duration of a race. This with the TCS light in action for all the race (not that I was taking that much notice of it).

For me, I tested it before
Turning those on actually makes your lap time slower.

Not necessarily. A high powered FR car on Rome without TCS could lose you time in those tight corners. ASM almost always go by that rule, though. Not only does it slow you down, you understeer as well. :ouch:

Yea, the effects are most noticible if you turn off TCS in an MR car or higher powered car. As someone said earlier though, if you're going for fastest possible times with a lot of higher powered cars, you would need some TCS on.

You can better start GT4 with all aids off so you don't know the difference between aids off and on so you'll get used to it on the most hard way. And especially when you have a wheel it is nice to play without aids

In GT3 I usually turned the aids down quite a way... except when I was using the TVR Speed 12... That beast needs aids man!!

I have a question...
Can you turn ABS off in GT4?? It would be interesting to drive with no aids at all.

ABS is off unless you buy a brake bias controller.

The ASM in GT4 works differently in GT4 than it does in GT3, in that you have the ability to control understeer and oversteer independently. (In GT mode only). By doing so, you can totally change the way a car behaves...

Have an AWD car that tends to push? Turn the ASM up a couple of notches on the understeer, while leaving the oversteer at 0. Now you have a car that will rotate at will.

Having trouble keeping that Ruf CTR from swapping ends? Dial out the oversteer while leaving the understeer at 0.

With the brake bias controller, you have control of how much ABS is applied under braking, and independent control for front and rear. If you want to have some fun, keep the rear turned down low while turning the front up high, and you will be able to coax the rear end out at will just by left foot braking into the corners, then plant it by stepping on the gas. I setup one of my Ford GTs this way by mistake, and it made for quite an entertaining replay. Turning the front and rear settings to 0 gives no ABS at all.

No clue...but with all aids off, some cars will lock up and slide like they are on ice if you brake to hard, mainly the Rufs. Not sure i that means ABS is off or not. Not all cars do that., even with slick/hard tires.

Try running the Capri Rally (di Amawhatsitsname) with original settings, then with driving aids off. You will notice a big difference in handling/braking on a tight track like that.

I personaly turn driving aids off for all cars, and it shaves seconds of my lap times. Then again I like riding it "rough" somethimes so it could be my specific driving style. I'm not a drifter though, I just like a car that I can "throw" in to a corner sometimes to drive an alternative racing line. (or as Jos Verstappen would say: "Een auto voor het betere gooi en smijt werk")

If I have problems with wheel spin (like in (semi)high powered FF cars) I tune it out using the LSD or the ultimate traction control: My right Thumb 👍
