Driving Line - On or Off?

I'm just curious if others use the driving line often or not. I'm thinking of taking it off to make things more interesting. I doesn't really benefit me in terms of angles for corners, but I think it helps to see the red marker to indicate braking. With it off I'd think you'd have to know the track better, which is more realistic and why drivers do learn the track first before racing it.

There's a number above the indicator that tells you what Gear you're in. When it flashes red, I brake to that gear and take the corner.

The way I understood driving lines were as indicators for beginner drivers. In GT4, you had no line. You also had the option of limiting the HUD, getting rid of the brake-gear indicator (meaning that you actually had to know when to brake!).

I drive with it on because it helps me better navigate through tracks I'm unfamiliar with or haven't raced on since my days of GT4.

When you have remembered all the corners of a track, it's better to turn if off. I generally drive faster without the Driving Line.

PS: The Gear Change Indicator in most cases is always a little bit earlier than the time you should change to lower gear or reduce speed.

For me:
tc-off
ABS-off
ST-off
drive line-off
If you want to be a real and good racer you have to turn all the AIDS off!just my opinion
PS:the gear change indicator indicates always the wrong gear, when it indicates the first I shift into second gear, when it indicates the second I shift into third gear....

It Helps for brake points and getting to know the tracks.

I haven't played a GT game since I rented GT3 on PS2, so yes I use the driving line. I tried going without it when I bought my wheel but it was just too much for me.

Play the game how you want to play it, who cares what others think?

The line does part of the thinking for you. Also, its distracting, so I leave it off.

^ I agree^ plus it isn't the fastest way around the track, just the shortest. IMO it's too distracting, leavin it off. I can't even stand how it has to be on for some license tests.

I use it to learn braking points on a course I am unfamiliar with. After a while the driving line just becomes a suggestion because I figure out a more effective line. After a while, I turn it off. I do this every time I get a car that is INCREDIBLY different than anything I've had before.

I leave it on until I learn a track well enough, which is seldom. Some of the actual tracks that I've been racing on in games for the last 20 years, and some of the simple ones such as High Speed Ring I can do without it, but I simply don't have the time or ability to remember every turn of every track.

I don't normally use it to actually set my line through the corner though. Just as a sighting aid.

If you ALWAYS use it and stick to it like glue, try turning it off on a track that you know well. You may find that your driving style is better suited to a line that differs from what the game suggests for you.

On A spec GT mode i leave it on 2 reasons learn the track and make doing the A spec grind easier. However on Online i like to turn it off it makes me seem cooler :)

I have been using it to learn new tracks as it brings me up to speed faster. As for racing I leave it off and also when I learn a track I turn it off. It is just an aid to help you get up to speed. Noting wrong with using it.

Do you guys think that you can pull faster laps with manual shifting opposed to automatic shifting?

Yes, in fact I know I can. Engine braking is far more effective when you can downshift before an automatic transmission will downshift and being able to keep proper power through a long turn is easier to do when in manual.

i use it off, would also love to be able to play without the map and the hud but thats a pipedream for now.

Absolutely. Look at the chicanes at Suzuka, using an automatic wastes time and speed in areas like these where the game shifts up and down for you. Picking a gear and feathering the throttle through a section like that is a lot faster. You should try to learn to use manual shifting, it's not too hard to learn, and once you get it down you don't even have to think about it.

As for the driving line, my braking points are completely different then the game's suggested line which just slows me down. Plus it's not good to rely on the game's line as it can't show you the right line for overtaking through a corner.

I agree with the other post, kick the automatic gear habit! I think the racing line is a great tool for learning a track, but that is it once you remember all the turns turn it off and let the real fun begin.

It really doesn't make much difference for me. Half the times it's on and half the times it's off! If you want to know when to break, it's best to look at the gear number and when you see it start to flash, start breaking.

It's set to off when playing gt life, but when I play online I turn it on. This is to give me an idea where the noobs may start to brake and hopefully miss out on an incident.

Yeah I know I described that pretty badly! Look at the gear indicator, and when you need to break the number of the gear you should go into would pop up, and when it starts flashing, is the best time to break. It's hard to describe so here's a picture!

It shows you are in gear 2, but next to it shows gear 1 in red. That's what I mean. It indicates that you should gear down to gear 1. At the last moment it would flash and that's when I usually break because it's the last possible second.

Oh wow, well I have to say that I just ran the Deep Forest track with my brand new Audi R10, finally put some racing softs on, turned off all assists, and used manual shifting for the first time. That was some serious fun!! I love the manual shifting because in a section like the tight part of that track I can just leave the car in 3rd and actually pull a better time. Plus, the R10 was burning the tires even at 115mph before. I'm sure the racing softs helped, but I think the manual transmission also went a long way in improving that also. I'm definitely not going back to the line anymore either. The experience I had was just so much better than anything before. Thanks for the heads up. I guess I just needed to step out there a little.

I have zero depth perception so I don't really have a choice. I will be At the turn before I see it without the red brake markings. I don't necessarily drive as they show, but it gives me an idea on when the corner will come.
