Scroll to the 40 second mark... I'm sure we've all seen this video though.
Anyways, having this as a viable option would make/break the game for some. Here's why:
Codemasters, producers of the F1 series as well as many others, have created the perfect (IMO) pit/car management HUD. While I'm racing, I can switch my fuel to rich to get a good gap from the car behind. After so, maybe on a long straight so I can read the HUD, I choose my tires and change any other car setting like brake balance or go back to my fuel settings and turn it back down to normal. That setting for my tires will stay until I change them for some other reason, and it will stay on that setting even for the next stops too.
The plus to that type is that the simplicity and ease of use. Normally I don't even have to think about looking at the tires I need to choose, rather than knowing the buttons and choosing from memory. The downside is that if I'm on slicks and it starts to rain, I'll rush into the pits and not even think about changing the settings, leaving it on slicks and me saying ohh 🤬..
Now a bad system would be this (IMO):
Although iRacing is acclaimed by many to be the best racing sim out there, there are its downsides to it, especially the pit simulations. Taking almost an entire lap to constantly flick back to the text box and then back to driving, it's hard to afford to waste time looking back and forth to end up crashing. Now some features that it does contain is simply amazing, going beyond tire selection and fuel quantity, but the trade off is the lack of attention. You would imagine with such a great sim they could implement some sort of voice recognition, but maybe that is later to come.
It's sorta a picky topic to nab at. You can never give everyone everything they want, but IMO those are my opinions. If we don't even get to drive in later in GT6, it wouldn't be a huge let down.
