Driving yourself into the pits

Another thing that I don't get is why only certain tracks have the animated pit crew. Like @Islaygaz said, Tsukuba is one of them.
I'm assuming all tracks with pit crews are "premium" tracks, and those without are "standard" tracks.

Driving into pit lane would be nice. But how are you going to select your tires and fuel?

Same way as the F1 series. It uses the D-pad for your tires. Then GT could add a slider, for fuel, that is controlled by some other button.

It would be kinda cool to have but as it's been mentioned, I have a feeling a lot of 'casuals' would either speed through the damn place completely missing their stop or just try to run over everybody, sadly. Those poor crewman :(

The only way i could see this being implemented is if it were an assist that could be turned off or locked in online lobbies.

Scroll to the 40 second mark... I'm sure we've all seen this video though.

Anyways, having this as a viable option would make/break the game for some. Here's why:

Codemasters, producers of the F1 series as well as many others, have created the perfect (IMO) pit/car management HUD. While I'm racing, I can switch my fuel to rich to get a good gap from the car behind. After so, maybe on a long straight so I can read the HUD, I choose my tires and change any other car setting like brake balance or go back to my fuel settings and turn it back down to normal. That setting for my tires will stay until I change them for some other reason, and it will stay on that setting even for the next stops too.

The plus to that type is that the simplicity and ease of use. Normally I don't even have to think about looking at the tires I need to choose, rather than knowing the buttons and choosing from memory. The downside is that if I'm on slicks and it starts to rain, I'll rush into the pits and not even think about changing the settings, leaving it on slicks and me saying ohh 🤬..

Now a bad system would be this (IMO):

Although iRacing is acclaimed by many to be the best racing sim out there, there are its downsides to it, especially the pit simulations. Taking almost an entire lap to constantly flick back to the text box and then back to driving, it's hard to afford to waste time looking back and forth to end up crashing. Now some features that it does contain is simply amazing, going beyond tire selection and fuel quantity, but the trade off is the lack of attention. You would imagine with such a great sim they could implement some sort of voice recognition, but maybe that is later to come.

It's sorta a picky topic to nab at. You can never give everyone everything they want, but IMO those are my opinions. If we don't even get to drive in later in GT6, it wouldn't be a huge let down.

If I was developing a racing game, you would be able to plan your pit stops before the race, but there would also be some sort of AI crew chief on the radio, so when you went into the pits, he would say stuff like:

"Hey it's starting to rain. Do you want to switch to rain tires?" [Press (X) to accept.]
"You're looking a bit loose out there. Do you want to switch to softer tires?" [Press (X) to open tire selection.]

I would love to see this implemented into the game, would make for a great addition if they can get it right.

I'd get a few speeding penalties at Eiger Nordward short track, I've always wanted to see how fast I could go there :D.

Fuel and Tyres should be easy to add to the RA menu.

I know right kinda like how games handle oil changes. Such as a mechanic getting under my car and filling my oil back up while they are still under the car! I know gravity is a bitch but jeez it doesn't hurt to work with it once in a while.
my theory with GT5 oil changes is that Oil Replacement Man got under your car, drank your oil, and the filters in his trachea let him regurgitate it all back into your car clean.

We all know PD doesn't want to program pit crew fleeing for their lives or being thrown into the air by a stray Audi race car.

I do not think some useless comments is what the series needs.

I think, PD don't want to see photomode pictures, which are showing crew members flying in the air. It's a racing and not a killing game.

This may sound odd, but GTA 5 has a genius system to handle this - character/weapon/radio station selection brings the game into an ultra slo-mo setting where you can take time to make a decision, while the game is still 'progressing'.

For offline use, it would be good to use. However, I too have played the game and there are drawbacks to it at times. There is soo much information you see at first, you are quite overwhelmed. The other notion is that it obscures your view of the track.

All I'm wanting if ths is implemented, is something simple, clear of my racing line, and able to be manipulated quickly.

Not enough games add this feature!! would be great if they did for GT in the future.

Trying to shave a few seconds off by braking as late as possible before the line without going over the speed limit would add so much more immersion to the game!!

How about, to stop gory chaos from happening, the car steers itself in the pits while you control throttle. Full pit control would be great, but disastrous.

Man, am I the only one that likes the auto-drive pit feature? I find it gives me a few seconds break, crack my knuckles then go again.

The RA menu makes a lot of sense. I think that would be the best place for it, rather than having a pop-up as you enter.

B-Spec had a good feature with the pit strategies. A "PIT STOP" menu in the RA function would be perfect.

It seems that the most common argument against this is the problem of running over the pit crew. In every game I've seen where you drive your own pitstop, the crew members are ghosts that you just pass through. As Ittybitty Stigy said, the auto drive already does this in GT5 sometimes. I would have no problem with ghost crews, it's still more realistic than Herbie taking the wheel. (I have plenty of people to run over in GTAV)

Yeah but you could just pause it anyway.

I'm just saying for a game that is always striving for to be the most realistic simulator, it's really frustrating to have magic forces taking over my car.

What happens when you overshoot/miss your pit spot - drive through the whole pit lane without stopping? (Legit Question) - I'm guessing, pitting would require practice.

Yeah I guess, same thing that happens if you overshoot your brake point at the end of Mulsanne. You're f'ed.

Bad idea, running over people in the pit and then complaining that they don't die, we all know we would try that at some point.
But at end of the day this isn't GTA5 and people have the option of playing that instead if you want to run people over  .

That would be the added challenge to the game, if you overshoot, then you will have to backup till you get into your pit (loosing time). I would probably not want the game to be as precise as some sim games about hitting the exact spot. All pit crews & other AI cars or if this was online would be ghosted so there would be no issues with colliding or interring with other players. The big deal here would be that your car wouldn't be refueling or changing tires until your into your pit, maybe making the difference in a close race.

Anyone ever played DT Racer for the PS2? You were able to drive into the pits. You had to stop completely and then a menu pops up showing refueling and asking to change tires. If you move the menu disappears until you stop again. The pit crew people were on the other side of an invisible barrier. You were allowed to use any of the pit spots though.

Chuckled at that one... I can never tell if I'm too late or early going to the end of Mulsanne. It seems as if that I have a different line ever time I take it...

In the FIA WEC, you cant back up in the pit lane unless youre in your box and going into the garage

I don't think you can back it on up in most major events, I may stand corrected on this. The FIA does not like this because they are reversists. :D
