Dualshock throttle.. "x" vs right analog comparison

I tried both the stick and the triggers, and I’m so conditioned to using X, my lap times are terrible in comparison. It almost seems impossible to ever shake my instincts from X, Square, and trigger gears. "/

Wonder if anyone used the left anolog stick for throttle, break, and steering with the clicking for e-brake.

If so, they deserve a medal.

Sorry to be pedantic, but you can't assign anything to the left stick's up and down if it's used for steering, I wanted to use up to toggle ghost cars and down to do the wipers (though I don't exactly miss either of these controls), but you can't.

I too use the triggers for the pedals and the right stick, down for up shifts and up for down, like a sequential manual. Confuses other people, though!

I remember the old PS2 days, a few games made use of the analogue button pressure thing and it got pretty annoying, best examples I can think of are GT4 and Metal Gear Solid 2, possibly 3, where the fire button would aim your gun and releasing it would fire, but if you change your mind you could release the button slowly and you wouldn't fire the gun; of course, in a stealth action game it was important at times to not make a sound, but it was so sensitive it was just easier to put your gun away.

I did get pretty good at throttle control with X on GT4 in the end, though.

edit: While I understand why PD were reluctant to move away from the old button layout (most old franchises do stick to the same controls where possible), it makes absolutely no sense to do so with GT5. I mean, the default layout has X and square, buttons with very little in the way of control over the range of analogue inputs, controlling two of the three sensitive inputs involved in driving a car (the third being steering), and then they have what is a digital action in a car mapped to the two buttons with the best controllability over the analogue range... Makes no sense, but at least they've designed it so you can set it up exactly how you like.

Steering - Left Analog Stick
Accelerate - R2
Brake - L2
Shifting Up - Right Analog Down
Shifting Down - Right Analog Up
Handbrake - X

I use:
Right analog for Throttle and Braking
Left analog for Steering
R1/L1 to shift
R2/L2 to look around the cockpit.

I sometimes press the square button to "left foot brake".

^this.

Plus right analogue for shifting up and down gears if you use manual.

^^^👍

It makes even less sense considering like every single other racer on the PS3 uses R2/L2. I mean isn't this why Sony "copied" the trigger-like funtion of the xbox/gamecube controller?

this is my set up for my ds3 controller:

Normal Buttons
L2 - Brake
R2 - Accelerate
L1 - Rear View
R1 - Flash/Toggle High Beams
Tr - Reverse
O - (RA Function) Show Menu (in-game controls)
X - E-Brake
Sq - Ghost (License Tests)
Select - Change View
Start - Menu

D-Pad
Up - (RA Function) Select +
Down - (RA Function) Select -
Left - (RA Function) Adjust -
Right - (RA Function) Adjust +

R3/L3 Stick
R3 Pressed - Windshield Wipers
L3 Pressed - Horn
L3 Left/Right - Steering
R3 Up/Down - Gears Up/Down

R2/L3 Gas/Brake . . . X for upshift/square for downshift . . . remap the right analog for "look" R/L.

This is the way I prefer it, triggers to modulate gas and brake (which you can do at the same time!) buttons to snap off shifts, and the self centering right stick to quickly look right and left. Now if only PD would have let me map "look back" to the right analogue stick . . .

...or you could all just use a wheel like a sensible person would. ;)

I don't like wheels, because i'm playing to relax after work. So i'm playing from my bed. Don't want to sit with a wheel after ~7+ hours of sitting before PC monitor. =)

As for DS setup: left analog for steering, right for throttle and braking since GT3. Before that used x/squre for gas/brake, but i found right analog system is much more comfortable for me to use.
L2/R2 system from PS3 games .. i don't like it at all.

Curious....Once you cook a corner and upset the balance of the car by thrashing the stick while racing against something human, how do you deal with it?

I could never use the right stick, wide exit and spin city imo :/

Hey Shinzah, sorry I didn't respond sooner.. dunno if you're still in the thread but I wasn't sure what you mean, I over run corners sometimes but that's not the analog control problem that's just me screwing up! :sly: I have no issues keeping control of the car in corners. If I need to brake while I'm on the throttle I can use the R1 button. My set up is:

Left Stick: Steering
Right Stick: Throttle/Brake
L2/R2: Shift Up Down
L1: Ebrake
R1: Brake
other controls assigned to the face/direction buttons

Really I just play for fun anyway. If I screw up a corner I'll let up and let people pass me. If I spin out oh well. I know I'm slower since I use a DS3 so I don't drive too aggressively. I'm not going to pretend to be a race car driver using a game pad! Plus most of the people online with mics seem to be VERY short tempered and let fly lots of dirty words so I just let em go & do my best to stay out of the way. :ill:

In my opinion L2/R2 brake/acceleration control is better than right analog stick because you can apply a little bit of both at certain times.
I shift with right analog, and I also programed RA (realtime adjustment) on up/down d-pad, X, O, and R1, because it's very useful to change the settings during an endurance race.

I've only got the use of my right arm, my left being completely paralysed from a motorcycle accident years ago, although I still ride today. While occasionally I'll use my wheel/pedal set most often I just use the controller. So with that in mind I use:

R2 - Throttle
R1 - Brake
R Analogue stick - Steer
X- Rear view
O- Handbrake
[]- Change view

If I want to use a manual gearbox it's just easier to use the G25 of Logitech wheel.

I can drift fine, racing is no issue either. I can modulate the throttle and brake well, and my thumb controls the steering just fine. Drifting involves a little more dedication, what with throwing the odd handbrake in there. If I still had the use of my other arm I could race while eating, smoking, drinking etc etc etc lol.

Hats off to you sir, thats some dedication.
