From GameGazette: ""Super_Secret", the man that broke the story about 3.0, the Slim, and more, has posted another thread on N4G about why cross game chat is not here yet for the PS3, and all blame is on a certain unnamed publisher being the douchebag about it."

seems like EA has been holding back cross gaming chat features for the PS3. the informant is reputable being the one that has leaked the FW3.0 specs along with the PS3 slim news. people seem to be doing ungodly things to the EA forums because of it and i wouldn't recommend anyone to go look at them unless you really want to be disturbed.

Was just about to post this, EA basically crippling the ps3 now

EA has taken a turn for the worse, my least favourite game thingo, producers? I forget what the are called :p.

yup producers mostly they dont do a whole lot of development outside of the sports franchise. id hate to be an EA executive tomorrow morning. they will have alot of PR recovery to do.

^Publishers

Here I was thinking that Activision had finally outdone EA, but EA decides to do something more stupid. 👎

Jesus, apparantly the main game causing this is the Harry Potter game

Having had the displeasure to work with EA, I can indeed confirm they are a bunch of cocks. [/JamesMay]

I will never purchase an EA game ever again. I didn't even get Madden or Tiger Woods this year because of my hate for the EA franchise...pffft:tdown:

I can't imagine a world without Rock Band or Burnout.

How on earth can this happen!?

Sony should tell EA to go and **** themselves - and make it so.

"I promised you all an update on Cross-Game chat, so here it is.

And you're not going to like it.

As I told you before, Cross-game voice chat has been in the works for a while now. I mentioned last time that it was on target for 3.0 providing that we didn't hit any snags. Well guess what, we hit a snag! An all too familiar snag.

Time for a history lesson.

How many of you remember what it was like before FW 2.4? That's right - no in-game XMB. No custom soundtracks. In-game XMB was the most heavily requested feature at the time and we worked tirelessly in order to get it in (By "we", I mean Sony Japan - as I said before, FW isn't my department). It very nearly didn't happen, you have no idea how difficult it is to backport a feature like that onto a system (the game) that doesn't even know its there, but somehow we managed it. Well, for most titles. There are still the odd few titles out there that don't support in-game XMB ("black" titles).
Custom soundtracks was another one we had working in nearly every title. Obviously it was never going to work in black titles, but about 95% of the titles that worked well with the in-game XMB, had custom sountracks working as well.

So what happened? Why is it that titles HAVE to be developed specifically with custom soundtrack support when it was working more or less just fine?

Is it because Microsoft owns the patent on custom soundtracks in games?

This is something that makes me laugh every time I see one of the less educated ones spouting it off. That's an absolute fabrication. Patents don't matter, Sony as a while infringes upon thousands of patents through the whole company, both hardware and software. If you infringe a patent, you pay royalties to the owner or find a different way of doing the same thing that doesn't infringe. That's it. Microsoft infringes upon all kinds of patents we own but that's up to legal to sort out.

No, the reason we had to drop Custom soundtrack support like that has nothing to do with Microsoft. It does, however, involve a different company. A rather large company.
You see, one of their games happened to fall into the 5% that didn't support in-game custom soundtracks. And they did not like this.
When they found out that a new firmware update was going to suddenly make one of their games look inferior to just about every other game released, they protested. A lot.
They threatened everything, from legal action to dropping support for the PS3 all together.

What could we do? There was almost no way of getting it to work correctly due to the way their game was made (i.e. Poorly) and we certainly couldn't leave a broken implementation in there. That's when the hard decision was made to remove all support for older titles and instead adopt the "opt-in" approach that, to this day, most developers simply ignore. I have to hand this to Microsoft - they did their system right from the beginning and by completely separating it from the developers, they have universal support. Its very unlikely that you'll ever see mandatory support for custom soundtracks in games on our system, I'm afraid.
So yeah, lets nail this on the head: The next time someone starts blaming Microsoft for something the PS3 doesn't have, tell them they're an idiot, they don't know what they're talking about. Are we clear on this? This is a pet peeve of mine because while everyone's happy to go around blaming Microsoft, the real culprits are getting off scott-free. Of course, I can't actually name them directly or, should I get caught, I might even get done for slander (you can never be too careful), but you can figure it out - it's not Activision and they have a poor history with the PS3.

So what has this got to do with Cross-game voice chat?

Guess.

I warned you that we might hit a snag and we did. We've found a couple of titles that just don't like it. Similar to the custom soundtrack fiasco, it can cause lag, crashes, desyncronisation (very very bad when this happens), you name it. It can't be used in these games and it just so happens that some of these games are owned by the same company I've been talking about above.
So we're in a predicament: Cross-game chat is useless if only certain games support it. It's not too bad if its just the odd one that doesn't like it, but at this rate we'd have to drop support for the ENTIRE back catalogue, which would (As I said) make the whole thing useless.
Furthermore, we can't rely on developers to implement direct support for it. It didn't work with Custom Soundtracks, so why would it work here?
So right now, we're trying every little trick in the book to find a solution that works for everyone, but don't hold your breath on this one, so far it looks like the best you're going to get is a gimped implementation of it that only works with a handful of new games.

Now as I said, FW isn't actually my department and even I'm not supposed to know some of this stuff, but this is actually where we are right now. It sucks majorly, but there you have it. Depending on the end result, it could come in FW 3.1 or it could come in FW 4.0, hell it might not even come at all but rest assured they are working very hard on it. And if it doesn't come, you know who to blame.

Here is Super_Secret's next post....

I thought I gave enough hints as to who it was without directly stating it, but I guess not, so lets try this again, except we'll make it interesting. You have a vested interest in the company you work for and you see this other company constantly getting in the way. Oh sure, on the outside everyone's all buddy-buddy, but that's just good business. And that's what it boils down to - business. Why fix something that doesn't need to be fixed when you can just **** over everyone else and get away with it? You know Sony isn't going to make a huge fuss, they can't afford to alienate publishers and developers (especially HUGE ones), not when Microsoft and Nintendo are happy to welcome them with open arms. Still, all our hard work and it just gets pissed down the drain because one company can't be bothered doing some support? I ask you again - what would you do? Oh and I appreciate all of you guys trying to spread this around, I hope that they'll back track and enable that feature for as many titles as"

To whom this may concern,

It has come to my attention through a reliable source, http://www.n4g.com/ps3/NewsCom-384582.aspx?CT=1,
that EA is directly responsible for the exclusion of several Playstation Network Features. We The CONSUMERS have asked Sony to deliver two major features: Universal Cross-Game Chat and Universal Custom Soundtracks, for the Playstation Platform.

The very idea that EA has threatened and made a fuss about some of their games not working well with said new features, fearing to look slightly inferior, is nothing out of the ordinary, however, to the extent or preventing 25 Million CONSUMERS from enjoying something they have asked for is atrocious. I will not support EA, EA Sports or any EA affiliates until this matter is spoke on, in a public setting to us the CONSUMERS and the matter has been resolved.

I hope you understand 25+ million, kids, teens and adults of the Playstation platform are extremely upset with this information. Please consider working with SONY and Informing us the CONSUMERS about plans to resolve this issue.

Regards,

~NAME

you guys seriously believe this BS. The fact that same user said i wont be using that account again not good enough for you. You seriously think EA gives a damn about old games, games that probably no one remembers right now.

and why would EA drop support and lose all ps3 revenue just for a few old games? the article is just total BS.

gamers are so gullible these days. i guess it comes with the territory that alot of gamers are actually not that mature enough to spot gaping holes in fake ass stories

You have no idea who Super_Secret is. He has insider info. He told us about SLIM. He told us how it wouldn't support Linux. The release of fw2.8, a 250gig slim and much more.

He is completely reliable. He hasn't been wrong.

People are believing him because he also provided pictures of PSPGo and PS3 Slim before they were announced. He has managed to build his credibility up to this point.

True or false, judging by EA's forums, it is too late now.

Personally, I am still buying the Rock Band songs from the PSN store today.

just because that user was right does not eman the same user is using or did use that account again.

it could be another user who posted from that account.

it absolutely makes no sense whatsoever that EA would drop all support for sony just because sony is going to make some old EA games look 'inferior' if they add game chat.

seriously think about. this is absolutely a ridiculous rumour.

I agree that this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but neither does half the BS that Valve and Activision claim about the PS3.

By the way, I see your shift key works. Could you use it properly? It hurts to look at your posts. Thanks.

Say if you put Harry Potter in your PS3 then the xmb could recognize this and boot up the old XMB or just disable the cross chat, or just say "PS3 will reset to play this game" ?

Seems odd how EA would not want these features to be part of their new wave of games.

EA is the worse gaming company, IMO. They do everything quarter-assed. A few games, with exception. And I mean few. I'll believe any negative thing, no matter how ridiculous it might sound. This story doesn't sound ridiculous to me.

It was only a month or two ago that EA publicly threatend to drop suport for the PS3 if they didn't impliment a price drop......Sony politly played the "who's this EA and what do they want again?" card, followed by a price drop. now you could say the price drop was coming anyway, or you could say EA made the price drop happen sooner. The awnser to what actualy happened is Sonys buissnes and I doubt we'll truely know, or care. What I do know is EA has some serious clout and Sony allways try to keep all there developers happy. Buissnes is buissnes and friends are friends, EA and sony certainly arn't in the market to make friends, just money!

That was Activision ad their CEO Bobby "Exploit the Franchise" Kotick.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/activision-threatens-to-drop-sony-if-sony-doesnt-drop-ps3-and-p/

EA was actually supportive of Sony doing it on their own terms.

Oh man your really missing out Tiger wood 10 is great, the new putting is really precise and top notch 👍

who knows I may buy another EA game, but for right now...no. I don't understand why they do certain things for Microsoft but the don't for Sony? Are there any EA exclusives for Sony? I can't think right off the top of my head but I know they have done some for Microsoft. Call me a "fanboy" or whatever I really don't care. I haven't been able to turn on my PS3 in about 2 1/2 months because I have been out off town. I know EA dropped the NASCAR game which is cool, they sucked at it anyways, but my point is the "update" they promised i.e. driver changes, paints schemes, ect. Microsoft got them about a month or so ago and my buddy in N.C. told me that the PS3 update wasn't out for NASCAR 09. Why? I paid the same amount for the game the Xbox guy did. This is why I'm upset with EA. Activision is guilty too of that. I'm sorry if I upset some of you but to me it dosen't make sense? Can someone clarify this for me who is more informed??

You appear to be asking why certain developers will give certain consoles exclusives over another. The answer is Money.

It goes both ways. I don't see anyone wondering why Eidos gave the PS3 version of Arkham Asylum special play as the Joker challenge maps.

Kotaku asked both compagnies about the internet rumor

Rather than jump to conclusions, we decided to contact the two parties involved for comment on the situation. First to respond was Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of corporate communication. "Not no-how, not no-way did that ever happen. This is a total fabrication – total nonsense. We think voice chat is an extremely cool feature and added it to Madden/ PS3." Brown then added, "We support cross-game voice on other systems and would be happy to do that on any console."

Soon after Brown responded to our inquiry, Sony's senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold also responded, keeping things short and sweet. "This is rumor and frankly not true. "

I suppose it's up to the reader to determine what they believe, but I'm leaning towards the rumor being utter nonsense. Two responses from EA and Sony both were far from the 'no comments' and 'not responding to rumors and speculation' I've come to expect in situations like these.

But hey, an anominous source on the internet sad so, so it must be true, isn't it

Thanx for answer. The Batman game which was just recently released is an exception.

So basically what you are telling me is Microsoft, Nintindo, and Sony will deny certain extra's in certain games because they didn't or won't pay the extra loot it takes to add the extras to the game development companies. So its all about money? Has nothing to do with coding? If thats the case then I'm really disappointed. Thanx again for clearing that up:tup:

Patrick Seybold also said there was no PSPGo or PS3 Slim. Take it for what you will.

I can think of a few others too. Think Final Fantasy. Or look at Ghostbusters availability in Europe.

Well, mostly what happens with extras and exclusive is that Microsoft/Sony will pay to get extra content exclusively. The trick here is that exclusive is a very vague term and almost always means timed exclusive.

Of course some whole third-party games remain exclusive to one console for various reasons. The 360 does get more of thsoe because Sony is more focused on first-party exclusives. But there are cases where coding is an issue. Valve does not like the PS3 and instead of putting in the effort to use it well have been making 360 exclusive Left 4 Dead games. Other companies found early on that the PS3 was more difficult and favored the 360, but some of them now say it is easier to start on the PS3 and port to the 360. When this happens there might be an opportunity for them create extra content for the main development system while the port is being done. As more developers get more time with the PS3 I expect the PS3's "exclusive" extras to grow.
