Go get the no psychic guards mod LaBounti. Makes the game MUCH more realistic. That's the advantage PC currently has over the 360.

i have another noob question how do i recharge my sword's magic power? this guy gave me a sword and when i strike it does an ice attack... but its run out.

i'm still at level 1 and i just did my 1st arena fight and bet on a few matches afterwards good money

You have to find a mage who can do it. I ran into somebody in the Arcane University who does it, but don't remember where exactly it was. However, it costs 1 gold piece for every single charge the item holds. So, for example, a staff that has a 1700 charge level would translate into 1700 gold to get it recharged. Expensive. :grumpy:

Any mages guild will recharge it as well.

I'm not all that far into the game, but I've done a lot of the side quests. I'm done with the Fighters Guild and the Arena...I have a lot more to do I think.

Your character has most likely turned into a vampire. I had that happen to my character. Check your resistances/weaknesses page in your journal. It should list Vampirism. I won't tell you how to get rid of it though, as that would ruin the fun.

Oh man, what a pain it is to have to feed on people all the time, and the witch didn't even say where I could get some Grand Soul Gems so I'm just doing the arena now, during the day, when the sun melts my flesh..... oh yeah, lots of fun... :)

Didn't crash once, played straight for 4 hours tonight.

Yep, I hated being a vampire. So much so that I cheated a tiny bit to get rid of it (only to get the grand soul gems, I didn't want to look for them. I did everything else normally.). I never ever cheat to beat a game. I was frustrated at having to travel at night. It took me the solid part of a day and a half to remove it.

Sadly, I haven't played Oblivion since Thursday. I think I'm suffering withdrawl symptoms. :scared: Work is getting in the way...

I've never crashed either, just having unavoidable sound issues.... the no psychic guard mod helps a lot. its more realistic now.

I started yesterday. The graphics are stunning looking so far. It seems to be much the same start as Morrowind - anonymous prisoner gets sprung out of prison by the Emperor for quest-type purpose.

The interface is far more clunkier and awkward than Morrowind though. I liked being able to just hit the 2nd mouse button and bringing up all my menus and stuff on the same screen. None of this cycling through different screens. Looks like it was designed for the Xbox and they didn't bother coming up with a quicker more usable version for the PC.

Still, I'm well impressed so far. I had a new mobo/GPU/CPU arrive on Friday so it's a good stress test for it. So far it's running smoothly.\

So far, I'm not having any technical issues. It hasn't crashed to desktop once and I've heard that's a problem with it. Morrowind crashed on an annoyingly regular basis, though when it was patched it didn't give me near as much problems.

I wonder what size Cyrodiil is compared with Vardenfell? I've only wandered from the central city to Chorrol so far, but it's certainly a pretty impressive sized game world so far.

What did everybody start as?

I went with the RedGuard. The Imperial guy was a good option for me too, but the resistance to poison and disease sounded too good.

I'm a Nord Knight born under the sign of the warrior...so ya I'm all out melee with heavy armour and big swords.

Thats exactly the case. It's not just the iterface and menus the game its self was numbed down in a few area and sprused up in others and is more console like with the inventory. But the PC version is the better version.

How do you take screenshots? There's a line in the settings file that seems to be the same as in Morrowind, that allows you to turn the screenshot feature on, but hitting the Print Screen button doesn't seem to do anything.

Also, when I was using the Morrowind Forums for XBOX, many of the people there advised to make a lot of game saves everytime you do something so just in case you run into something you can easily go back a save and figure out what happened or do something differently in case you actually do mess up..

You have to edit both .ini files. There's one in the game directory, and one in your "My Documents" directory where the saved games are stored. I provided instructions further up in this post.

You can travel during the day as long as you continue to 'feed'. ;) I haven't started even looking for the soul gems yet, might have to hit google to find them. What a pain for sure... I was waaaay to busy this weekend to play, but hopefully this week I can get some more time logged in.

It's pretty fun for sure!

^ i found a few soul gems but i dunno what they are even for. i think i found them in goblin joe's cave and other places.

I just googled a few tweaks and my outdoor frame rate is sooo much better with HDR on. the .ini file has many tweaks not used by sliders. an discoved the enable screenshot thing too as well as enable har drive caching.

I also enable the UseThreadedxxxx options since i have Hyper Threading enabled P4. I dont know if thats what gave me a performance boost but messing with them gives me smoother outdoor gameplay .

3ghz P4 prescott
1.5GB 3200ddr Ram
6600GT agp

1200x684 on a 23" HDTV.

Muchos grazias. I might post some pics later.

One problem I'm not having is load times. In Morrowind, the game would regularly stall when exploring outdoors as new areas were unloaded. In Oblivion I'm getting "loading area" messages but I'm not experiencing any slow-down or stoppages with them - it seems to be able to load new outdoor areas as fast at is needs them.

With some other edits as provided by Matrixhasu77 earlier in this post, there is a guide that explains how to remove the "loading area" message if it begins to annoy you. I haven't done this yet, but imagine I will before too long. Like you said, the game doesn't hesitate during loads like Morrowind would.

9 hours into the game and I'm at Level 3 so far. Too much time spent just enjoying the scenery. I oughta concentrate on raising some skills.

You're making me look like an Elder Scrolls addict with this post... I've played roughly 40+ hours and am currently Level 20. Yikes.

You're right though, the game is beautiful. Last night after I completed a quest I went into Bruma and was fined for "stealing" (picked up off a dead guard most likely..) an item that I probably used during a quest and no longer had. I have no recollection of even doing such a thing. $1000 bucks out the window for a stupid mistake.

Must regain lost money...

I'm at like 26 hours and I'm only at the part where you have to find that big Welykind (big glowing rock).

On the whole its everything I wanted it to be apart from a few silly things, like the psychic guards mentioned and levelling bandits with daedric armour later on (or so I hear). I've already taken care of the latter with a mod :)

Frame rate sucks though, HDR or no HDR I get about 23fps outdoors with more or less default high quality settings. Tried altering tree, grass distance, grass size in ini etc.. but made little difference and looked crap. So hell might as well have nice graphics when it runs like crap!

And my PCs slightly better than recommended spec with 2 gig of RAM :scared:

/Crosses fingers for a patch with performance improvements.

here's what my character looks like right now :D

You can't. Unless you do the vampire cure quest, which takes about half a day in real time. You have to get rid of the disease before it turns into full vampirism.

Now that I've played about 15 hours of the game, I'd just like to mouth off some random thoughts, mainly because I was a hopeless Morrowind addict, so comparisons are inevitable.

The graphics are truly magnificent. I'm playing on the following spec PC - Athlon64 3500, 2Gb RAM (dual channel), 256Mb 7600GT GPU - and everything looks awesome. There's bugger all slowdown and no load times while exploring outdoors. Morrowind awestruck me with it's huge game area and beautiful scenery - this is better, not in just obvious terms like technical improvements that are inevitable with sequels, but with the city architecture, character design, etc. HDR seems to really add to the dynamic nature of the light and shadow in the game. It really feels like sunlight is streaming in through church windows and like armour is reflecting real sunlight.

The character AI is much improved. In Morrowind, characters either stood in the same spot 24 hours a day or walked around on preset paths. Either way, they were boring and predicatble and it started to annoy me after a while. I've not had long enough to notice any obvious negatives about the AI in Oblivion, but there's some obvious improvements like characters going in and out of indoor and outdoors areas and not being seen in their places of business at night but go home. Doors even seem to be locked at night! These are nice touches. edit: Also, stuff like characters meeting and talking to each other in the street so you can overhear conversations and rumours is nice.

Character balance. I'm only Level 5 so far so I don't know how higher level characters play, but at least your character doesn't start off so useless as he did in Morrowind. No more being pwned by mudcrabs and cave rats. He's useful but the enemies are obviously balanced off to challenge him realistically.

There's at least a few hundred hours of gameplay in this game for me so the best is yet to come. These are just my preliminary thoughts.
