engine covers

i dont like them. they serve no purpose but to look nice. its just another thing to take off when you work under the hood. sure it might reflect heat when working on a hot motor but c'mon... its cramped enough as is especially with newer cars, you could barely get an arm in there sometimes. having a nice looking valve cover is way better than black (or silver) plastic.

On the new Astra's, I own a GTC, they covored everything.. On the older models you could see the cooler, filter...

Plastic covers ruin the look of an engine. the first you know that you've got engine problems is when the plastic melts all over it. In the TVR Tuscan, the engine bay is completely sealed to prevent modifiying, which I don't like at all.

This, however, is what an exposed engine should look like, from the Alfa 156:

On the RX-8 you can't see the engine even if you take off all of those plastic covers, the engine is way low and little and covered by the alternator and other stuff.

There's so many engine cover parts on a Lexus LS430, it takes about 10 minutes for a technician to get anywhere near the servicable parts.

I always get the idea that the manufacturer puts those engine covers there to ward off consumers that don't even know how to check their own oil. It just confuses the heck out of them, and they'll slam the hood shut, forgetting all about trying to perform any maintenance by themselves...

Yes, the RX-8 has the most plastic covered engine I've ever seen.

Diesel engines are covered quite a bit too from what I've seen.

I also like bare engine bays.

I'm the same way about engine covers.
I hate them and am an open engine man.
Even on my car, hated the fact that GM decided to put the Coil over plug ignition coils on the 2.4 engine with an aluminum cover, over the engine.
Every time I'd change the plugs, loved the looks of the engine with all of it's bare beauty it brought to my eyes.
So, I did something about it.

With 2 weeks of studying service manuals and reading about DIS systems, developed my own outboard ignition system using outboard DIS coils, mounted on top of the OEM housings, mounted to the firewall.

It worked great and not only brought out the beauty of the engine bay, but got me more spark energy to the plugs, giving me more power, better gas mileage and an engine bay that I still can't believe is my own.

Here is a picture of the engine bay with the cover over the engine.
Not a bad looking engine bay, but could be better.

Here is a picture of what she looks like with the modified ignition and uncovered engine.
Yeah, I know, it's only a 4 cylinder engine in a Chevy Cavalier and not an exotic but can say I did the engineering, testing and tuning of it and makes ppl do double takes when at car shows because they don't recognize what engine it is. 👍

Here is the custom DIS setup and the heatsink is now part of the Ignition Control Module.

Yeah, companies take short cuts to proven power delivery systems including ignitions systems and even though they are similar to race versions of coil over plug setups, use weak coils or have to reduce windings to fit the package.
This can cause a loss of power and efficiency with cars like mine and unbelievably, the Skyline. I'll be honest with you, I didn't realize they used a coil over plug setup for the Skylines

It's funny to see the Honda boys at the track, looking into my engine compartment, scratching their heads, and wondering what engine is in the car, especially in a car they deem as slow. 👍

Who told you that? Thats absolute rubbish, I think you're confusing the fact it has kind of two bonnets. If you lift up the smaller front bonnet you expose the radiators and fans and leave the rest of the engine bay covered like so.

But you can life the rest of the front end too an see the engine. I've seen inside a Tuscans engine bay and lifted the front off myself, a mate of mine rented one for a weekend.
