Enthusia - Better Racing Than GT4?

I've been playing the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 4 for some time now and am about to trade it in for a PAL version, in order to play a more refined version of the game.

Today I recieved my copy of Famitsu Wave magazine, a monthly Japanese Magazine that comes with a DVD packed with video footage of new games and other stuff.

Anyway, on the disc was a preview of Konami's Enthusia Racing. Having watched the footage, I was impressed as the game seems to include a range of features that put the emphasis on good driving and racing, as well as promising what likes a better game structure than GT4.

Here's what the video shows: -

1. First of all, the player has a "HP Meter", a life bar of sorts that is reduced when the player makes mistakes. In the video, you see the meter deplete when running wide onto run off, as well as when hitting AI cars or barriers. From what I've read elsewhere, the bar depleting to zero means race over for the player. I think this is an excellent addition. Its almost like a damage system in that the more mistakes you make, the less likely it is that you will be able to continue. Looking at the system, it appears that the classic Turismo tactic of using AI cars as bumpers will be penalised. Sure, you may be able to get away with a few bumps in order to win but someone who wins without resorting to this tactic will have more of their HP bar at the end of the race, which seems to translate to more bonus points.

2. The point system in Enthusia seems more worthwhile than the "Spec" points seen in GT4. The points earned by the player are directly related to their ability to unlock new cars, tune existing models and race in new events. Points are given for race results, with deductions for bad driving as seen above. In addition, each race applies a point multiplier to the player, based on how good their vehicle is compared to their opponents. If you have the best car on the track, the multiplier is non existent whereas a poor car has a high multiplier. Win with a poor car and earn tons of points, meaning upgrades, new cars and other events are available sooner. Far better than GT4's A & B Spec points.

From my perspective, I've enjoyed playing GT4 in the sense that I love selecting arcade mode and setting up well balanced races on tracks such as the Nordschlife. However, in order to get all the cars and tracks I want, Turismo mode has to be played. I've been critical of the structure of Turismo mode for some time now and its disappointing that this mode has been left relatively unchanged compared to previous versions.

Here are a few suggestions I'd like to make for GT5's Turismo mode game structure: -

1. Remove the "active car" system whereby the player selects a car in their garage prior to tuning and entering events. I'd much rather go to an event and have the game filter the cars in my garage in order to show which ones are eligible. The same goes for tuning. I'd much rather go to Nismo and be presented with a list of all the Nissan models in my garage, allowing me to select and tune each one there and then. All of the hopping back to the garage to change car stuff is clumsy.

2. Change the style of manufacturer races. There are too many manufacturer races where the player has to buy a certain car to enter, only to then win that same car when the event is won. I would prefer to see manufacturer races where the player is given a stock car, races against closely matched opposition and then wins that car on winning the event. If these cars were not available to buy normally then it would make their ownership a bit more worthwhile. Buying VW Beetles and racing them in Beetle events in order to win a Beetle seems plain daft.

3. Tie A spec & B Spec points into the licensing system. This way, players would have to reach points targets in order to become eligible to earn licenses. This would encourage players to enter challenging events. At the moment there is no incentive to enter a competitive car into an event, with players instead turning up for most events with cars that tower over the opposition. Players who enter races with cars similar in performance to their AI rivals should see their larger A spec points go towards the chance to get new licenses before players who try to dominate with overpowered vehicles.

4. A & B Spec points should be modified in accordance with the players performance. For every impact the player has or excursion off the track, points should be deducted. For setting fastest laps, split times or highest average speeds bonus points should be given. Clean passing should be rewarded, as well as drafting.

What has always bothered me about Turismo mode is that its one of the only examples of a game which starts off difficult and then gets easier, to the point where the game's scale becomes more a chore than a challenge.

Any thoughts?

[Moderator's note: though the topics in this thread have been discussed elsewhere, this post was approved due to its in-depth nature and readability.]

I agree with your points 1 thru 4.

The HP bar to me sounds a little ... abstract and "gamey"; give me real-world physical behavior and damage modelling any day. Yes, I don't object to 'points of for poor racing", but then I think that's better handled in your point describing how Enthusia points are earned and used. Yes, it seems to me that GT4's point system is borderline useless.

Can I also add that going to an event where the entry requirement are cars <3400mm ... and then going through every single manufacturer and car that "looks short" trying to find one suitable for that race is one glorious pain in the bum and the perfect example of how to completely waste an hour with tedious and repetitive button pressing ... sure the event could list those cars that match the entry requirements even if I don't own one?

I love your idea of selecting a car once you're at an event. I'd like to expand on that slightly and say that the entire garage system is somewhat weak. It's such a nicely polished game i so mnay ways, and then I walk into my garage and get this awful *list* of cars I have to sort through, filter, cycle from page to page and so on ... UGH ... I'd love to be able to walk into a garage environment ala PGR and literllay walk around my vehicles, view their stats and perhaps even take photos right then and there ... there is no reason why this couldn't be done, really.

The whole "You're in this car" system in GT4 seems counter-productive to smooth game play.

Great post.
I'm looking forward to Enthusia and will go at it with an open mind but was a little concerned at Famitsu only scoring it 29 (If I remember correctly).

As I've said elsewhere about this, Konami are dev kings and if they can work their magic with a racer it should definitely be something to look forward too. :)

PD are the masters of graphics. They are the kings of eye candy. Good for them.

However, in the very near future, somebody is going to match their graphics expertise, and add a more intelligent approach to gameplay. We'll see a racing game soon that will give us the challenge so many of us are craving. Maybe it will be Konami, or maybe it will be Microsoft, or maybe it will be somebody else. It appears that Konami is certainly headed in the right direction.

Meanwhile, PD will continue to sell millions of copies of their GT1 expansion packs to the look-at-this-cool-photomode-shot-of-my-favorite-ride crowd. Everybody will be happy.

I agree, great ideas. I love the one about getting a list of eligible cars. Here's an example why:

In GT4, when you select a race or a series, it tells you stuff like tires you can use, cars that are eligible, and prize credits. Well, in the Spider & Roadster series, it lists too many cars and has "etc." at the end of the list. I thought the race was specifically for Miatas, Opel Speedster, Lotus Elise, and those types of cars - small, agile, quick cars. I didn't have any of those cars so I let that series slide until it was the very last one I needed to complete in order to unlock the "Extreme" events.

I had a Mercedes SL65 modded out to 957hp, but it served one purpose (get the CLK DTM to get the CLK-GTR!) and has sat in my garage since then. After reading a little on these boards, I discovered that it's eligible for the Spider & Roadster series too (which I quickly mopped up, none of those cars could hang with 957hp).

A great idea. We can hope for the best in the future. Is Kaz listening?

I think Enthusia is going to be the game that might upset the balance of power not Forza. Ive said this in the past. From what ive heard this game should be pretty damn good, also Im not sure where I read this but the makers are racing fans so this should be intersting.

Yes, based on the OPM demo, Enthusia has a better driving model and MUCH better DFP support than GT4. I can not wait to check out everything else Enthusia has to offer. Driving the R32 Golf is pure bliss.

What I saw of Enthusia didn't look too good, especially the upgrade screen where you would upgrade your car's properties with "level ups".... but whatever, when it's out I'll read a review and if it's better than GT4 I'll buy it, if not I won't.

Yes, Enthusia is looking all the more promising every update. It seems it will capture the more hard-core racing simulators. Keeping cars equally matched allows for a more challenging and realistic race experience. It looks like Enthusia may be trying to emulate this. I like that damage can be done to the extent of ending a race and being penalized for hitting other cars, hopefully shortcutting through chicanes will be penalized too. It also has a few extra goodies like the E30 M3, BMW M1 race car. M3 Evolution Race Car, even a Fiat racing car from the screenshots I've seen on their main website. The graphics seem up to par with GT4. Their car models are extremely accurate and well done. Definitely looking forward to it's release...

Hey sorry for sounding dumb but what is theyre official website??

In the demo when you are about to hit a wall going fast the game will slow to like one frame a second for two frames and then the screen flashes white and you hear glass break then a second later the screen fades back to the game. Its so cool I will often forget about the race and to find a good wall to trigger this effect. 👍

Looks good, definately open to other games also. I mean I love GT4, but the bottom line is I'll play any game that looks good and has as much realism as possible

Now the big question is, will it be released in the US? I sure hope it does

Great post. Enthusia wasn't even on my radar.
I was waiting for Forza...til I got the DRP and realized I wouldn't be able to enjoy it with Forza.
But from what I have read here, Enthusia sounds like it may be able to fill that void.

I ove GT4, but like many others, I wish there was a better way to match up cars in the races. I seem to either get left in the dust on straights or blow evrything away by the end of the first lap.
I am having trouble finding the happy medium, and the A-Spec points are not helping at all.
I have raced lower A-Spec points and had cars that just blew mine away, and then raced higher point races and blew out every car on the track.

I find it very annoying that there are so many 1 or 2 lap races at the start of the game, and many with a rolling start. You have two choices: race in an over-tuned car and get no A-spec points or use a competitive car and race dirty by braking late and smashing other cars. Then, when you get further into the game, the AI gets easier. I ran the JGTC championship with a GT500 car and won way too easily. I went back in and tried a couple of races with my GT300 RX-7 and still beat the GT500 cars. No tuning done to the car.

Another gripe: take the muscle car series for example. Part of the time the Shelby Cobra or the Buick Special are in the pack. When you enter with a car that's tuned enough to beat either you will get like 6 A-spec points. Then sometimes neither car will show up and you totally outclass the other cars. The classic car series in Pro League is similar, you can get a Buick Special and the really slow old Citroen in the same field. Stupid.

Edit: I always snicker at the last chicane at Suzuka, because you brake right under a big Konami sign. :)

I'll buy it even if it's worse than GT4 but at least on par with GT3. Until last night, this was still my best racing game. Considering it is a 2000/2001 game, I think we all have been missing serious competition in this genre.

So, I hope Enthusia will turn out to be a real challenger to GT4. That'll give us a better GT5.

HP? Points?

It's Castlevania the driving game!

You are penalized in Gran Turismo for driving badly by going off the road and failing to win the race. Yes, bumping into cars intentionally should cause some kind of delay or punishment. And likewise, a game with really smart computer-controlled cars will do well against GT.

I know I'll buy it because I end up buying every racing game that comes out, I have "Total Immersion Racing" for crying out loud!
I returned that game an houre later after I bought it.

Just read this at IGN concerning Enthusia,
"It's not about how much time you spend under the hood. It's all about your skills behind the wheel. Experience hundreds of vintage and modern vehicles from the world's top manufacturers as you work your way up from amateur to the top professional driver. As in the real world, Enthusia Professional Racing emphasizes pure driving skill and ensures that winning is a result of ability rather than how much time and money has been spent tuning your car."

Dang. Think maybe the game should come out and prove itself before it takes such nasty shots at the GT series?

Hehe...even though I do agree that tuning and cash can win you races here that your skills would obviously lose you.
I am a prime example of that!

Are you serious!? I HATED the controls in the Enthusia demo (for both wheel and controller), they just felt way to soggy.

I'm definitely gonna buy this game. I wanna check out another racing game outside the GT series, and also the addition of touge (which hasn't been in the GT series) makes me even want it more.

I like that idea of having to win by skill and not by using an overpowered car. Sure it would be harder, but hey, it's fair.
