I realize that the scoop is functional. It just doesn't need to be that damn big. They could easily cut it down a few inches and still have it be effective.

And they wouldn't be as practical for everyday use.

👍

Josh...

i was gonna right something really big but i forgot where i was going with it... basically bigger = more air flowing through the intercooler... which means that more heat can be disapated giving us more air and thus more fuel to cram into the cyl...

also, did anyone else know about the Evo VIII FQ 300? i just read about it in Sport Compact Car (Oct '03).

"We ordered up a UK-spec EVO VIII FQ 300 for the task. As its name suggests, the FQ 300 has been tuned to 301 hp and 300 lb-ft torque...UK cars, by the way, also conform to the Japanese specification and therefore benefit from a sixth gear."

The FQ 300 is sold in the UK and comes with an HKS downpipe and cat-back, HKS intercooler pipes, HKS panel air filter, and I believe some ECU tuning.

They both perform quite nicely, but I just dont find the Impreza visually appealing at all. Im not saying that the evo is the most gorgeous thing in the world, but the sheer ugliness of the impreza would make me want an evo.

C&D = slacking.

Considering that C&D has more experience in cars than you, I would take their word over yours. They didnt get the prices wrong, the factory hands them the prices (duh). When they said that the Mustang makes 390 hp, they were talking about the SVT Cobra (which makes 390 hp). Too many people whine about car mags being wrong etc. Well they know what they are doing, and as far as I know, they have more experience in cars than everyone on GTP. So if it came down to who's word I would take, I take C&D...

Oh, and to the people talking about the understeer on the STi. I'd like to go out on a limb and say this: "When you have 300 lb-ft of torque in an AWD car, you're gonna have understeer. Plus, FHI has a tendency to tune the USDM cars towards understeer to keep inexperienced guys from killing themselves or others".

Just my two cents.

Oh, and STi - duh. ;)

If it is understeer that you all are complaining about i would agree with F8 that its is a problem with the tuning of the STi... Such problems can be tuned away... I would also think that slight understeer is desireable in a rally car...

Why, because they give you competiton!?!?!?! Ohhhh I hate you still..Yeh..I do...I want your car, and I want to steal it....legitamently...Dammit....BURN

As you can tell I like the EVO it looks better in my opinion.. but a fact is its more stable and handles better... so I'd say its more "Fun" to drive... jsut my thoughts....

"stable"... no... understeer is "stable" lol...

"stable" being more fun to drive... again no...

anyways... 911's had their quirks due to porly engineered suspensions... why cant we accept that subbie made a lil mistake in their suspension tuning... understand that the subbie suspension is better in general and then re tune and allign...

I love my Evolution and wouldn't dream of trading it for an STi. But I know STi owners who feel the same way about their cars.

I'll be autocrossing my Evo this weekend against some other Evos and STi's. For a slow speed handling exercise like an autocross, the Evo seems to have a clear advantage -- the STi doesn't get to use its HP advantage much, and in fact the STi's gearing causes problems, as they run out of revs in 2nd gear while the Evo keeps pulling another few MPH. There are some tweaks that need to be done to the car to make it handle better, like dialing in more camber all around and dialing out some of the rear toe that is specified as the "correct" factory alignment for the Evo. With these changes and with Hoosier DOT-legal race tires, I'm probably pushing about 1.1 G's of lateral acceleration, and the car is very well balanced. But STi owners can do these same setting adjustments and get good results as well.

One comment on the STi from Tom Hoppe, a nationally competitive autocrosser who campaigned a WRX this year and who is considering competing in an STi next year:

From http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=426408

Honestly, we are having second thoughts about running the STi in AS. It seemed like a great idea, but I don't think that car can win without major work on the shocks. I just don't have $2000 in the budget right now to work on shocks in addition to all the race tires and etc.......

We'll see what happens though..

Of course, if you're not planning to compete in the car, just buy whichever one looks better to you. ;) The fact is that either one will give you much more capability than you ever need for driving on public roads, and either one will give you the capability to scare the hell out of your passengers.

These are my thoughts exactly. I think these two cars are so close that you really can't go wrong either way.

I picked up my EVO two months and one day ago. I chose the EVO over the STi mainly because I read that for the 2004 model year, the WRX STi and the WRX are going to have the same front clip. Not to mention the $2500.00 difference in initial cost. I installed a turbo-back exhaust system, Intake system, tuned the AF mixture and timing, and upped the boost to 23.5 PSI. It sure is nice being able to leave 380+ HP Cobra Mustangs, (as well as Carerra 4S and C5 or Z06 Corvettes), in the dust. It's even more fun when they try to keep up with me on the mountain roads in Californias beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Two months- 9,698 exhilerating miles!! :embarrassed:

and to think...
I almost bought an IS300

I was a Soob boy, but recently I have had my doubts. That Limited Ed Evo in the Auto news forum is

From the tests I have seen in autocar, the Evo leaves the STi dead in the 1-160-0 kph test.

It's not really a drag/quarter mile car, but I ran a 12.56 without roasting the clutch on the launch. If I had feathered the clutch around 4000 RPM on the launch, I prolly could have gotten it down closer to the 12.00 mark.

But, like I said, it's NOT a quarter mile car. Far too much engineering into the drivetrain/suspension to do nothing but go fast and strait for a few seconds. It really shines on the twisty mointain roads. Going to try to get some track time at Infineon Racyway in one of the "Drive your own car" driving schools up there someday. That should be a blast.

BTW, a very close friend of mine was also at the drag strip in his supercharged Cobra Mustang, and I beat him by almost a full second. He is now trying like hell to figure out how to get out from under his 'Stang so he can get an EVO or STi. :D

yeah, the EVO rocks. I have done a handful of mods to make mine a little faster, and with all the $ spent on mods, I still haven't spent as much as I would have if I had bought a stock STi.

I did that at Summit Point Raceway a couple of weeks ago. A lot of fun. It's a car that is incredibly easy to drive fast. The handling is damn near perfect -- you feel like the car is perfectly balanced. Many corners, you barely move the steering wheel at all -- just steer with the throttle. Give more throttle and the car goes wide, back off gently and the car tucks in nicely.

Well judging by FastSaloons.com The STi rips the Evo a new one....by quite a few seconds...I think that Autocar comparison wasn't speaking of the 300bhp version of the STi

yeah, the "Not-WRC-Legal" 2.5 liter STi DOES produce more power stock, and IS one tenth of a second faster in the quarter mile, (three tenths slower 0-60). However, for the $2500.00 base price difference you can do alot to the EVO to make it put more power to the ground than the STi.

Also, the best part about the EVO is that there are MANY Porsche, Corvette, etc. drivers who have no idea what it is. I pulled up next to a Carerra 4S near SFO a couple of weeks ago at a light. I looked over and said, "on green?". He looked at my EVO from front to back, and kinda smirked and said, "yeah". On green, I launched on him by at least two car lengths, (clutch stinking the whole time), and when he caught up at the next light, the look of confusion on his face was hilarious as he said, "what the **** is THAT?!?!". I simply replied, "just a little two liter four-banger family car", and pulled away.

Actually the Evo's 0-60 on Fast Saloons is

Well here's a chart hold on

Cars 0-60 0-100
1 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII (4.8 secs) (12.7 secs)
2 Subaru Impreza WRX Sti (5) (4.6 secs) (11.0 secs)

.
