I'm in the market for an external drive. Usually I'm pretty up to date with most things tech, but I've never needed one until now so don't want to miss anything. So any good/bad experiences you've had with them?

Looking at around the 1TB - 1.5TB mark 3.5".

USB only is fine, but would like Ethernet if the price is decent (Which I'm guessing it won't be).

Best ones around are Western Digital. I use them quite frequently, and they may not be the cheapest ones on the block, but the speed or upload and download is amazing. Your local electronics store might be doing a deal on one, or you might be able to get it a little cheaper than off their site. Just keep your eye out ;)

My Seagate 500GB is very good. Seagate, Western Digital, not much to choose between them.

Late update. But I ended up getting a MyBook 1.5TB for $119AUD. No problems so far. It's even in my bookcase connected with a USB extension cause I'm a sucker for WD marketing.

Look at this, tell me it's not the most beautiful hard drive you've ever seen, and then tell me it's not a great deal.

1TB = $95
2TB = $170

And it's not very big either, even though it looks huge.

EDIT: I do realize that you already bought one, just throwing this out there

I have had problems with both seagate and maxtor (now owned by seagate) external hard drives. I've heard a lot of good stuff about WD but never used any of their products...

I would just buy a hard drive, an external caddy and do it yourself. Off the peg branded ones are not as good value for money and hardly do anything different.

I think the best looking external is the Pleiades G5 Hard Drive Enclosure, probably best if you have a mac to go with it though. Its really high quality and fanless.
