Hey guys,

Perspex is here...

20140531_102854.jpg

Got my Thrustmaster F1 rim today, really nice quality and great mod wheel. Let me know when you want me to send it. :)

Ok teaser time!

Couldnt get on with the perspex without having it cnc'ed to shape so continuing without. 6 new LED holes have been drilled to match the real rim and will be used for various functions. I will be replacing the LEDs with clear types to keep it all looking neat and tidy. After long deliberation, using the stock buttons will probably work best, the NKK MBs are nice but I would like to retain some originality from the rim and they are saving me £90.

Once the carbon is on the wheel will look totally transformed and then it will be on to cleaning out the inside of the rim and starting on the wiring. I have ordered some connectors and other bits to hopefully get this finished soon.

If @Mayaman likes the end result then his will be next. Pricing for these will follow at the end of the project when I can assess the final cost in parts/time.

Next stop is the dip shop!

If your after building a new sim rig give me a shout.

The GT2 rig is back in business my man. got the entire cockpit, just waiting for my headliner. :]

between this wheel and the GT2 I'll need a second mortgage. lol

looks great, cant wait to get my wheel

Since you seem to be very adept at creating wonderful things with steering wheels, can I propose an idea for the next gen? Taking inspiration from Mayaman's carbon fiber enclosure for a Samsung Galaxy Note,

I think the next progression is to use that idea to graft a drop-in holder for a phone to the front of the actual wheel. This is how Mercedes Formula Rims are and how I believe the rest of the field will eventually go to:

Just an idea, I do not have the capability of pulling something like this off, but I would pay a good deal of money for a wheel that I could have my phone as the centerpoint.

I have been playing with that idea since i made the holder for my note 3 ( not Mayaman :) )

There are 3 problems i am running in to:

1. It will be very difficult to mount the note 3 firmly to the wheel and also be able to take it out ( it's a 500 euro phone) If i would make one it should look like the display is one with the wheel rim. Otherwise i might as well use the fanatec universa hub solution with a phone holder.
2. The added weight to the wheel and also can a phone handle the FFB?????
3. If have been searching ebay for a good and afortable donor F1 wheel, but havent been able to find one.

Still haven't given up on the idea though :) and fanatec's wheel hub will make mods easier

on topic.............

very much looking forward to seeing the "dipped" wheel

Hey guys

Slight delay on the dip due to unexpected vet bill.

Regarding the new style of display for 2014 I am sure that the guys at Sim Display or Leos are working on something. Hell with the popularity of these it would be a crime to not look at options.

Price wise Im not too sure where they would come in but tj4ere are already some large screen displays available for modders.

I have a Note 2 and cant imagine getting this to fit on wheel!

I agree :)

A galaxy note is too big for a F1 wheel.

Too bad you had to pay an expensive vet bill and had to delay the next step of the F1 wheel.

Excellent progress so far 👍

The orginal Formula 1 2014 steeringswheel has a 4.3" display made by Mclaren.

Link for the Specs or PDF

This part of the specifications is the reason why i do not want to mount my new phone to a wheel;

  • Vibration: 100Hz to 1000Hz, all axes, 24 hours
  • Vibration isolation is recommended

The displays are for sale at Mclaren. More info sales@mclaren.com

Dont tempt me to do a 2014 wheel too! Lets see how this mod goes first.

Im still struugling to source the rotary knobs so if anyone wants to have a look for me it would be appreciated. I tried Amalgam bit they are not interested in sharing!

Got colourless leds today for the external leds and 2.54 connectors so gutted im having to wait now!

Just wondering ??

On the hardware side the F1 wheel looks awesome.

How are things on the software side?

1. supported games
2. software supporting the wheel

For the conversion I am doing software is sli max manager, see sim displays site for more info.

There are more config options than you can shake a stick at and support for 7 extra leds like the ones I am adding.

I am running the stock display with no inputs on F1 2013 atm and is fantastic. Cant wait for the buttons to be added. Lots of titles are supported.

Fantastic product from them and cant wait for new models to be released for future mods!

Don't worry about incorporating next gen, by then THAT of which you slaved over working on will be obsolete as well  In fact, the more I think about it, the more I want a wheel with absolutely no buttons or lights or electronic anything whatsoever... WHAT??? Yes, just a rim shaped like a formula style with the only workable buttons being the paddle shifters on the back. Because when virtual reality takes over, the games will use 3D body trackers that are accurate down to a fraction of a millimeter to track your arm moving over to press a button in the virtual world, and since we won't actually be looking at our wheels in the present reality, there will be no need for polish and flash. Only the size and feel have to be accurate. But this is once again a topic for another thread and I am sorry to keep derailing yours. You do excellent work and it has inspired my thinking about what kind of wheel I would ultimatly have you design for me! :D

Just thought I would share the different leds, looks so much cleaner with the colourless lenses.

Excuse my sausage fingers.

Just thought I would let you all know the rim went away this morning for the hydrodip. Looking forward to seeing the results so will post up when I get it back.

After it gets back it will be on to the wiring, a tidy up and assembly.

OK so sorry for the slow progress here, the rim has been dipped

Teaser time...

Thanks guys,

Looks good in the pic despite the photo quality. Hoping it looks even better in the flesh. Had it confirmed that delivery will be on Monday and I am not back at work until Wednesday so maybe get cracking on the wiring.

As soon as the postie arrives I will get some more pics up, especially for Mayaman since his rim might be next.

I see some others may be interested in having a conversion. If all those interested can post it would be appreciated. I still dont have confimation on final pricing but to do batches would certainly be cheaper.

As soon as everything is finalised I will get a product listing up on my website with the various options that are available.
