Id be interested in having this done.

Im guessing these new gadgets wouldn't work on PS3...
PC only

True, the displays only work for PC. However I will probably be looking to offer these to work for PS3 as a standard F1 unit with PC capability also if I can get all the wiring to fit.

Still thinking about a quick release but the cost is going to jump again for me. Will be an option on retail models though.

Slight issue on the dip, you will notice what looks like a hair under the display stuck in the carbon dip. I have emailed the company who did the dip and awaiting a response to get it rectified. Apart from that, its bloody awesome, pictures don't do it justice. When complete I will dig out my 1000D and get some proper photos.

More soon...

Got some more images with the F1 display unit in place to give you guys a better idea of how its going to look.

Got word back from the dip company, the front of the rim is going back for re-coating and should be back towards the end of the week.

From there a tidy up and start the wiring. Cant wait!

Doesn't look like I have done much more, most cant be seen as I have been cleaning out the internals for switch fitting. Still, progress is progress.

Started on the wiring this morning, excuse the mess. I had planned to use 2.54 headers but as this is a permanent mod, I have simply soldered as required and wrapped with heat shrink. The tricky part, well not tricky but the part that you have to think about is daisy chaining the gnd and common live for the switches as required. The push buttons all require a jumper to carry the ground signal around the wheel.

More soon.

Where do you get the small wire connectors? I have to solder two wires on my wheel, and they need til be taken off without removing the wire completely from the pcb.

Great work btw! :-)

Thanks!

The small white connectors are the stock connectors from the original wheel. For an alternative, Google 2.54 headers as they may be suitable.

Got a bit more done but had a hiccup with the D Pad as I worked down the first side of the wheel. Sods law, got all but one wire soldered up and the last one, the ground wire, has come away from the switch. They are very delicate so i am either going to have to un-solder everything on the switch and replace it or see if I can reconnect the wire. Not a happy bunny so have walked away from it for today, I will go back fresh faced tomorrow!

Awesome work ORDL, I'd love to have something like this further down the line:/QUOTE]

Thanks bud, probably a step too far for me fella!

Been working alot this week and havent had 5 minutes without the kids to sit and concentrate on finishing the wiring. As soon as I get time il post an update.

Ok boys and girls, we are getting closer and closer to getting this mod finished.

The wiring has taken a while as I have been working a lot and only getting small amounts of time to work on the wheel.

I havent dug out my DSLR so my apologies for the phone pics for now but I promise some propper shots when its all done.

So, wiring is almost complete and heres a quick snap while testing that all the leds work...very bright!

One of the encoders will act as an adjuster in game to lower the brightness.

Still need to do some tidying up but the wiring loom as it stands. I have also filled in the centre hole ready for the last 12 way switch to be fitted.

I have to adjust one of the 12 way switches as its sitting slightly higher on the front panel and they need to be equal.

I have a guy I work with sorting out the stickers and hopefully they will be available soon. Just got to source rotary knobs and put it all together.

Another update soon, hope your enjoying this project as much as I am :)

More progress pics, the wheel is finally back together, tested and working.

I have also stripped the wheel base to change the wiring as I will only ever be using this rim so no dangling coiled USB cable!

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone here has the SIMR F1 display unit, I'm looking for setup info from any who use it with their games, specifically iRacing and F1.

If you have then please get in touch.

Cheers

Just waiting to arrange the decals now and to finish off this project with some decent photos. I have had a few tests with the rim now and its fantastic on iRacing now I have programmed various functions. Mr Mayaman, I need your iracing username!
