So I stumbled into an online room with "FALSE START CHECK".

I read the instructions, "KEEP THE BRAKE ON OR PENALTY"

I'm place in the last row and keep the brake on :dopey:, the others do not :ouch:. Never saw them again.

Guess the penalty is no way near the reward for cheating.

Did you keep the brakes on after it said 'START'? If you did then you've kinda missed the boat there....you hold on the brakes, rev the engine and release the brakes once it says start, if you try and gas it during the 3-2-1 it'll give you a short penalty.

the game freezed last time in the screen "KEEP THE BRAKE ON OR PENALTY"
had to use the PS button and exit from game

It's the only option for race start IMO. However, people have claimed it's caused black screen (doesn't seem so to me) so I don't always use it.

I am not sure if you HAVE to actually keep the brake on, but I guess it prevents rolling. But I know for sure that if you hit the gas before the countdown is through you get slapped with a pretty hefty penalty. You should be able to pass anyone who gets the penalty. So if it doesn't look like people are being stuck with penalties, they are either doing it right or have found a way to circumvent the check, but I have not heard of such a thing.

I love the False Start races, ive got such an advantage in small cars compared to big racing cars from them ignoring the false starts, plus I love trying to anticipate the Start like Drag racing drivers anticipating the tree on drag strips :)

Don't think you actually need to keep it on if you're not applying the throttle. But you sure need to if you want to build up the revs.
But same here, almost every time it's used, I get the "almost black screen" at the beginning of the race. Meaning the game freezes on the message telling you to keep the brakes on.

I've never seen any form of motor racing in the real world, where cars turn semi invisible & slow down after a jump start! So in the interests of keeping things realistic, I never turn it on in any of the rooms that I host, I also have penalties off for the very same reason.

We used to get drive through penalties in GT4, why they abandoned a realistic penalty like that in favour of the stupid: 'ghost/slow car' ones we have now, is beyond me. If Kazunori San really wants to implement "insane levels of realism" in the GT series, he's just shooting himself in the foot with this kind of unrealistic nonsense!

👎

EDIT: It would be much better if we got a drive through, & had a certain amount of laps in which to serve it, or we get a DSQ.

Several times I've experienced the game not actually showing the false start penalty message before the race starts, and then being penalized because I didn't know it was active. Boo.

I always start as though False Start Check is on, in any race. Costs you zero time at the start and you'll never be caught out by not noticing it was turned on.

I never really mess with it in my lobbies, but sometimes I turn it on. I turned on the false start check in my own lobby I started, and found out half the people that joined couldn't read. :P

I found that the fastest (well, just slightly faster) way of launching for False Start is to hold down the brakes only about 50% or 40%, so that it takes less time for your brakes to dis-engage, therefore sending you off faster.

This is better done with pedals, as you can actually manipulate the brake percentage better than a DS3.

10% brake is all you need, as long as it registers. And you can do it just fine on a DS3 too, only issue is if you're a stick-jockey instead of using the superior triggers you can't hold brake and gas at the same time.

We did?

I only recall the irritating 5s penalty on the rally events.

Actually you could set the penalty in arcade to 'forced pit entry' which is exactly what it sounds like - when you come to the pit lane the AI takes over and goes in. I think it was an actual pitstop though if you didn't change the settings, then it was technically speaking just a drive through.

Shows how much I played Arcade Mode then

Was that available in LAN Mode, 'cos I don't recall us ever using that in ... errr... ten GT4 LANs...

First time I came across a false start lobby, I just figured I would hold the clutch in, hold throttle at desired revs in neutral, then quickly shift to 1st and release the clutch at start of race. Unfortunately you MUST have the brakes on regardless if the car is in neutral or not, or get a penalty. This is dumb because even the BOBs in A-spec dont hold there brakes before a start, or any other standing start pro racing series for that matter.

It should only detect forward motion prior to the start, but I guess just programming it to force brakes to be on at the start is easier.

Took me a while to realize that.

From my experience, unless there are newbies on the track, most people don't seem to have an issue with the false start check so it doesn't really make a difference. If we had a sequence of lights which can go off at variable intervals, that might make it more interesting.

I will note that disconnects have happened to me more often with the check on.

Im a stick-jockey, but i can do it :)

I usually use the handbrake (although you have to use the brakes with FF cars) even if false start check is turned off. I accidentaly jump started before by less than half a second, and the penalty let me have a quicker start than the other cars as it cut the wheelspin off the line  .

I'm using it all the time.
Even when I'm in a room without it I'm holding my brakes just in case I stumble across a room that uses it but the warning doesn't show during the black screen.

False starts are pretty cool IMO if you do them right and leaving at the correct time defiantly will help you more than leaving early considering your not even able to leave until the "1" comes up and then you receive like a five second penalty if you do so.

Thanks all for your input, will have to experiment myself.

I was waiting when the screen came on, the rest started immediately before any countdown, 3,2,1, Start and on that I started, this means that they had more then 3 seconds ahead, if they get a 5 sec ghost and throttle penalty in the first corners of the Nuerburgring Nordschleife I'm not surprised I did not see them anymore.

Arcade mode was pretty much all I played in GT4, I found the rest of the game mind numbingly boring! I used to set up challenging races by detuning my car to the lowest power & then max out the weight, turn penalties on, so I get a drive through if I hit another car, then set the AI to max, & do 1 lap shoot outs at The Ring. Best part of that was, you'll never know if you got a penalty till right at the end of the lap, HA-ha!

:D

That sounds more like a lousy connection then. It happens every now and then that not everybody starts at the same time. If they didn't use the brake, they should be slowed down and ghosted for long enough for you to catch up, unless there's something seriously wrong with the system.

If you have penalties off, cars won't ghost on the false start.

False start, no penalities, heavy damage, & grip reduction set to real is the only realsitic way to drive. Heavy damage normally scares the lamers away and the room eventually fills with people on the same page. Real grip prevents short cutting and no penaltiea provides animate objects at all times.
