Kazunori Yamauchi at DICE 2011, “On Gran Turismo and I”

GT series creator Kazunori Yamauchi gave an interesting speech at D.I.C.E. 2011 yesterday, titled “On Gran Turismo and I”. Hosted by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, the D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit is designed to “bring together the top video game designers and developers from around the world and business leaders from all major publishers to discuss the state of the industry, its trends and the future.”

As such, Kazunori’s talk focused on the philosophy and passions that drive and inspire his work on the GT series, focusing on three points in particular:

  • He wants to show people the leading edge of technology.
  • He wants to share something beautiful and “cool”.
  • He wants people to simply enjoy playing his games.

He also discussed the philosophical concept of “mimesis”, which he defined as “What happens when you meet something new. You become infected with this desire to experience and share something new. With GT, I really want to invoke this mimesis on the players.” For a precise history of the word and exactly what it means, take a look here. In this context, it seems Kazunori wants you to think of “mimesis” as inspiration – which Kazunori wants you to experience when you play GT.

Kazunori continues, “I discovered video games when I was 10 years old, and since then I’ve experienced great mimesis from video games. Without that experience, I’m not sure what I would be doing today. It’s because of people like Mark Cerny and Richard Garriott that I’m able to develop video games today.”

He discussed his belief in two archetypes of people: realists, who achieve possibilities, and romantics, who challenge the impossible. Kazunori admits to being a “hopeless romantic”, with his “fixation on an insane level of realism” – almost certainly striking a chord with GT’s critics.

He also mentioned he would like to see a game created which investigates “the way people live and die, how they live and how they should come to terms with death.” Other news blogs are, unsurprisingly, sensationalizing this portion of his speech, but it’s actually nothing at all new – he’s discussed his interest in exploring the cycle of life before, all the way back in this 2009 interview while talking about role-playing games.

I’m still searching for a video of Kazunori’s presentation – if you have it or know where I can find it, please shoot me an email or leave a note in the comments below.

Romantic? Is his version of romance is different then mine. While I do love the game. I do have one serious problem. That jagged shadows. I would rather it be smoother pixels then jagged 8 bit looking.

I personally am embarrassed having praised the release of this game to friends. To have them mention the jagged shadows is disheartening.

I do have faith that many good things are to come. Enjoy the online aspect a lot. Over all happy.

  2. uberlight25

There should be a feature in GT6, where if you ram someone on purpose more than 10 times online, your disk cracks in half :D

  3. BuTTon

Guess people would appreciate this if it was more clearer what will be updated exactly and when and what they are working on for future releases. We are all in the dark and this news is irrelevant for us atm. So no wonder allot of people are whining. And any update news on GT5 shouldnt be coming from kaz but someone hired to keep us updated etc…

Glad i found the google translator in the appstore today! Translating kaz’s tweets like a maniac! Nothing rellevant found tho only that th update is coming mid-february meaning next week me thinks since that seems to be somewhere in the middle of feb! ;)

  4. Craigles

I know this is off topic and will never happen but wouldnt it be great if Polyphoney and codemasters worked together for GT6

  5. moxlox

Perhaps he should introduce fatalities to Gran Turismo. That way people will start driving more sensibly and not ramming each other irresponsibly. This would be the next level up from mechanical damage…. ;)

  6. The Young Hooligan

Unlike some people on here, I lived my life during the development time. I didn’t sit infront of a computer for 5 years saying “HOLY SHIT WHEN’S THIS COMING OUT!”. Which is why when the game did come out, I enjoyed it, as I wasn’t expecting it.
Honestly, we should make a seperate frorum/website where people can just bitch about the game, and we who ENJOY it don’t have to look at the same old “it sucks, wheres the updates?” comments..

  7. RPM

yee true, SAY NO TO DRUGS, and next update and many more! GranTurismo Forever! Racing game like GranTurismo which is precised in every dimension of its game play and graphics. You cannot beat any RACERS who is better than you like “higher level” because it takes practice and experience; In shooting games like Black Ops, you can kill anyone who is even a 15 Prestige pro in just one shot. Shooting game is all about timing of firing but in racing, it takes skills.

Conclusion: GranTurismo won’t be compared to any games like shooting games because some people do.
    AGREE everyone? :D

  8. GMW

GT5 is the best GT game I’ve played to date. Sorry but when you consider the improved physics, graphics (yes graphics! night/day, dry to wet to dry) It is so beautiful. People just like to moan. I for one have enjoyed GT5 more than any driving game I have ever played.

Spoken as a real car nut who also happens to own one of the cars in the game (C63) so I can compare reality to virtual reality and see just how much GT5 succeeded in getting things right.

  9. TokoTurismo

    @ RESNA86
Your a hero for saying those greatful words. +10 ;)

People nowaday puff, Will never understand.
All they want is crap and talk crap.

    1. BWX

I understand “this level of thinking”, I just think it is a load of BS. Kaz needs to fix the real problems with GT5 before running off on some delusional tangent. Talk is cheap Kaz, let’s see some action. Fix GT5, update GT5, Then we will tolerate your whimsical notions as something approaching credulity. I love GT- I don’t want to see it destroyed, even if by it’s creator.

  10. Nicky_loves_GT5

Wouldn’t be awesome to have kaz as a father :P. i mean picture it

    You :”Hi dad how’s work”

Kaz: “Fine fine, i have a new update for GT5 on my laptop. want to try it before it goes out?”

    LOL BEST DAD EVAR!

  11. jasr73

Hmmm, with all these first world dilemmas we have to deal with how can we possibly continue to get up in the morning?

I just can’t accept the position that GT5 is an epic fail that some are claiming it is. The short comings of GT5 have been well documented. Wether PD has delivered on the communities expectations or indeed their own rhetoric is matter of individual interpretation.

Let’s not forget the short comings of the hardware platform itself. No, this doesn’t excuse the length of development time, basic design flaws in the UI or an obviously incomplete program of work.

Not sure about the whole mimesis inspiration thing…but does GT5 deliver on a ‘real driving’ experience? I got to say put 15 of your mates on a track with decent connection in similarly matched cars; add some speed and a respect for race craft; and there’s enough in GT5 to offer something pretty special…

    1. kanjifreak

“Oh, Jordan Jordan lock the thread…”

What are you? A sad coward? Face it, GT5 is a huge disappointment and Yamauchi is incredibly cynical with these “deep” conference…

  12. brainfade

“He wants to show people the leading edge of technology.
He wants to share something beautiful and “cool”.
He wants people to simply enjoy playing his games.”

    ^BOLLOCKS, he’s failed at all 3 with gt5.

  13. kanjifreak

I really love this place, I’ve found worthy people, I’ve found irrelevant people, and “funny” people, so to speak.

You funny people should join Mr. Yamauchi and search for something deep in your lives, maybe intellect…

    1. Objection

      Get a dictionary…….

tact (tkt)n.1. Acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending.2. ArchaicThe sense of touch.

    2. lmao

Wow, gotta be the dumbest lawyer in the world. Give him the definition, and still doesn’t get it. Yup, not a lawyer, just a mouthy kid who ran out of arguments.

    3. kanjifreak

This web page is amazing, per every one or two intelligent guys, you get 200 idiots.

Yes, I lack “tact” while posting on an video game forum…

      LOL

    4. kanjifreak

      Awesome, indeed, they insist.

“Tact” must be shown in a video game forum…

      LOL

I love this community of sensitive nuns…

    5. Objection

The fact that you can’t resist posting childish responses, and nothing but, to a simple comment, that no real lawyer would find worth commenting on in the first place, and one that he would have had no problem countering if he did feel the need, say for fun,, pretty much brings us back to my opener. Thanks again for demonstrating my point.

    6. @Rob

Not really, if you make a claim for purposes of adding credibility to your position, that makes your claim fair game and relevant to the larger discussion.

  14. kanjifreak

I fight by letting companies know filling complaints and following procedures before the Federal Consumer Protection Bureau that it is compulsory for them to give what they advertised to the public, that they cannot just cancel stuff at will, that a User Agreement cannot be above the Consumer Protection Laws around the world. I’m a lawyer kid, an advertising specialized lawyer which also happens to be a GT fan.

    What do you fight for?

  15. vicr34

I think that they are looking for the best game desiners for the development of GT6, like he sead, focusing on three points in particular:

1.He wants to show people the leading edge of technology.
this is one of them,, i think his talking about the PS4 which is in the works, and its going to be something more realistic than the PS3, which they are getting ready for GT6

    1. GToholic

I think it’s just the same old PR lines they’ve been using since about GT2. Right on schedule, unlike most GT games……..

    2. rumble

I don’t give a damn about GT6! come on people, GT5 took 5 damn years to come out and now Yama think about the life/death. damn they HAVE TO to finish the actual game. Japanese freaks, give us a decent career mode, the old nice tracks of GT4 and some standard race cars converted to premium! GT fans don’t give a damn if Kaz want an rpg game. We want they works in the actual Gran Turismo! wtf!

  16. kanjifreak

Ryan: Ok, cool, enjoy the non-existant. I’ll enjoy fighting for what I love. If they listen, let’s see what the next update brings. If they respect their customers, let’s see if they can keep their word on what they promise and advertise.

Cool. Everything’s fine in Disneyland, I know.

    1. Ryan

…You do know what the “Reply” button does, don’t you?

And remind me what exactly it is you’re “fighting” for? Because to me it sounds like you’re just saying, “Give up there’s no hope.”

    2. Greg

Some browsers, and often the PS3’s browser, tend to post replies has new posts for some reason, even though you click on the right reply link. The only workaround I know of is to open the reply link in a new window when posting. Might not be intentional on his part.

  17. kanjifreak

Ryan: Your goal should be the to demand better quality on the games you love, not just to fantasize about ethereal stuff. In the end, SONY/PD will do whatever they want regardless of what we say or do. Millions will keep on buying video games regardless of the dropping quality every day. Sad like hell…

    1. Ryan

That’s not necessarily true at all. In order to reach that conclusion, you’d have to ignore all that’s already being done. For instance, online exp. We asked, PD listened. PD listens to people more than most complainers like to admit. Here’s a tip, PD doesn’t hate its customers. You have an unrealistically negative view on how they run their business. You can be all doom and gloom about the franchise if you want, meanwhile I’ll be enjoying the future of the series.

    2. infamousDee

Really? I suppose that was why FM3, despite being hyped like hell, struggled to reach 2m sales after several months as a result of its quality compared to FM2?

  18. rumble

the life/death japanese freak should work on it, he can’t let us down in this way. at least pay somebody to do it.. he got enough money for his life/death/wtf/epicfail thingy and enough money to keep GT5 related to race driving experience and UPDATED… come on Kaz

  19. Matthew

I really love Kaz’s vision. I just wish he had the resources to accomplish it. GT5 is just a stepping-stone to a more complete experience that I’m sure Kaz is working toward through the use of the series itself.

People are just impatient and unrealistic.

    1. Dwarf Veeder Wives

So what your saying is give him $500,000,000 and another 180 years, and we’ll finnally have a finnished game that represents what Kaz envisioned GT to be…….No wonder he’s worried about death.

    2. Matthew

That’s exactly it. The numbers may vary, and hell, it is likely impossible that Kaz will ever reach his goal, but it’s not like he’s losing his direction.

Seems like he doesn’t want to just create new games every iteration. He wants to build off of what’s already there using all of the resources he has at hand.

But I would like to see my 1991 Legacy on the car list some time in the next 10 years.

  20. kanjifreak

Oh, and the only thing they got right is physics, which can hardly relate to philosophy in the year 2011.

Give us 35 more RX7, 230 more Skylines, less European/American super cars, less tracks, more grinding, more bugs, less updates.

That is death Mr. Yamauchi, the death of “cool” and “fun”. You got it perfectly right!

  21. kanjifreak

The good old Japanese again, life, death, cheap philosophy and video games…

They were really good at video games, but now, they are just in decadence.

Mr. Yamauchi will always be “sophisticated”, with “deep” concepts, yet all the idiotic fanboys drool about the possibilities of GT6, LOL, GT5 has been here for 3 months after a 6 year wait, and we got absolute rubbish.

You guys never learn and are so easy to manipulate… LOL, but sad…

    1. Ryan

It is my goal in life to someday understand the type of people who spend their time on a GT fan site just to talk about how stupid and foolish the “idiotic” GT fanboys are for thinking about the possibilities of the future.

    2. rydeen

Just admit it, GT5 sucks. PD copied GT4, made a new menu system and added a few tracks and cars. Then they made less events and created the online part of da game. 5 effin years.

  22. Rob

Oh yeah, forgot to add that^

I’m hoping that this game updated the game to how we would like it, not how he would like it. Surely hes got enough money to make a game for himself?

  23. Rob

‘His belief in two archetypes of people: realists, who achieve possibilities, and romantics, who challenge the impossible. Kazunori admits to being a “hopeless romantic”.’

Let me get this straight, He admits to being the sort of person that challenges the impossible, not the almost impossible or what everyone thinks is impossible, but the plain simple impossible. I don’t need to put the definition of ‘impossible’ here, but its a long the lines of ‘it ain’t ever gonna happen so give it up’

Oh and even he said hes also hopeless at it………

We need a new leader, this ones broken.

Oh, and before you all chime in and flame me for knocking his ideals, I’m not. He does have vision and it is people like him that will change the future of gaming. But I do think it is misplaced in a driving simulator, We want more A-spec, he wants more b-spec, His attention should be aimed entirely at an rpg. If this is what his vision was for gt5 he should have made it clearer in the prerelease blurb and on the back of the box. It definately wasn’t what I signed up for, mediocre in general with 1% mindblowing.

    1. rydeen

Yes, totally agree. Combining an RPG with a driving simulator is the perfect mix for a great game, which is what the first GT games were based on, until the hardware got better and kaz (or sony?) wanted to show people what he could do with it. And here we are with the worst GT5 game ever + the longest waiting time ever.

  24. timcal1968

Maybe when he comes back down to earth he will hear us mere mortals and listen to our mortal pleas. Maybe he should really be concerned about the life and death of his franchise.

GT5 is a great game, but we’d like it finished soon please…

  25. Jakemania

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any “mimesis” as Kaz described it at all. I haven’t played a GT game in a long time before GT5, since my old PS3 broke and I had sold my PS2. That being said, I didn’t really find it new and invigorating as Kaz states. It just seemed like a middle of the line racing game.

After beating the game in a week or so, it’s easy to realize this is just an updated version of the old GT5 games. Yes, there are a lot of nice features added and it’s good that they built upon a great, successful franchise… But it does not seem new and refreshing – It does not blow me away in any way, like a game such as Uncharted 2 did. It doesn’t have the charm or the insane level of polish.
    Graphics-decent
    Sound-alright
    Physics-really good
    Car selection-great
    Online-iffy

While I won’t argue that it isn’t a good game, because it is, there’s just nothing spectacular to it. Firing up Uncharted 2 for the first few times was just unbelievable. The great graphics, rockets whizzing by my head on online, and the overall polish was just jaw-dropping. I can’t tell you how many people thought me and my friends were watching a movie at his graduation party.

I just don’t see where GT5 went wrong when you consider the development time given. I just wonder if PC were the platform, what kind of things PD would do? That being said, if gameplay can ever reach the quality and detail in which GT5’s photomode pictures appear, we’re eventually going to be in for an incredible experience. However, if PD takes as long in development as GT5 did (I realize GT6 isn’t going to take as long but it will not reach anything near photomode graphics), someone is going to beat them to the punch.

    1. deep_sky

“That being said, I didn’t really find it new and invigorating as Kaz states.”

Can’t disagree. The GT franchise is in major need of a kick up the backside. GT5 was just the same rehashed stuff from GT3/4. Even the events were the same.

      Major refresh needed.

    2. SavageEvil

Oh isn’t this a breath of fresh air…people still at this? You beat GT5 in a week and then some, you must be a God among drivers to have that amount of time to play. GT5 wasn’t supposed to feel new, it’s an extension to the series. I’m not sure what you are aiming to say. I have Uncharted 2 and while it’s a great game, it’s a scripted game end to end…it’s like a movie with you playing through it. GT5 is basically a car game with you just going through the hoops in order to buy the best autos to compete, but along the way you can snatch up obscure and otherwise totally passable cars and trucks and others. Online iffy? What’s wrong with online? Have you been online at all? Do you have friends with the game? Online is the best part of the game by far, most of my races consist of online races against 8-15 other opponents.

    3. Gwuber

LMAO, PD and Sony hyped up how it was supposed to have all kinds of new stuff, a new feel, etc, for years, and you can’t figure out why people came to expect it? Ok then……

    4. rydeen

GT5 doesnt need new tracks or cars, GT5/GT needs the feel of what the original game was based on. And races that are limited to specific cars cause i dont wanna be racing a SUPER GT race in a Red Bull X2010!! PD U CANT BE SERIOUS THAT THIS IS HOW THE FINAL GAME, GT5 WERE SUPPOSED TO BE. Is GT a dieing franchise?

    5. Jakemania

      @SavageEvil
Actually, I was on Spring Break that week so I did happen to have an ungodly amount of time to play. From mid-November to January to be exact. How can you say GT5 wasn’t supposed to feel new? Like Gwuber said, PD and Sony have been hyping GT5 for a long long time. It was supposed to ‘revolutionize’ the sim/racing genre. They’ve had practically 6 years to work on 1 iteration (unless you consider GT5P) while the competition can actually compete in 1-2 years of development time (NFS, Forza, Codemaster games, etc). With that much time, you would expect GT5 to blow the competition out of the water. And while it is better than the other series, it’s still pretty even. Aside from the physics, GT5 doesn’t really do that much better. I can’t remember seeing screen tearing that badly on any game for a long time.

I am not complaining about my $40 spent on GT5. I’m glad I bought the game. I’m simply stating that it seems as if PD has reached it’s ceiling. With that much time, you’d expect them to push the boundaries, like I said. And while UC2 was a scripted game, it was great overall experience. It didn’t win 50 some odd GOTY awards as well as best Graphics, Sound, Multiplayer, Shooter, PS3 game, etc. awards for nothing. It was an innovative and refreshing experience. A far cry above the first one.

And yes, I have used GT5 online. It was in shambles and took forever to even find/start a race. The races I did manage were laggy. I never have that problem with any other game.

    6. YoanP

      Totally agree.

GT5 burned my 60Gb PS3 two week after released and I think this game is poorly polished and has severe flaws.

No restrictions in most races make it boring since you
only need a powerful car and competition soft tires to beat it.

It isn’t innovative, is the same formula a little bit updated but now is insufficient.

    7. Jakemania

      @YoanP
Yeah, it’s not that it’s a bad game or anything. But for a game that was supposed to push the limits on realism and racing. It feels outdated already which it shouldn’t. And that’s concerning to me considering Forza 4, NFS Shift 2, etc. haven’t even come out yet.

    1. SavageEvil

Almost passed out reading that comment. As much as I would want more things added to GT5, I’m content with what I have already. I don’t have lots of time to play games, so I can wait for more updates when ever they show up.

Kaz has other interest aside from GT driving simulator, sooner or later we will hit the wall of diminishing returns, we are pretty close to it right now. Watch a day to night transition and back on Nurburgring and you’ll see what I am talking about. Only a matter of time till visuals look so realistic that there will be entirely too much to take in.

As I a reading between the lines, I have a feeling that Kaz will add a more of a role playing element to the GT series, where you can start off lowly in the karts and work through the years increasing your skill and becoming better all before you reach the point where you can no longer get better and then skills begin to degrade then you have to retire. Sounds interesting, considering that B Spec does that to a very simple degree. I just hope that GT5 has a pretty long shelf life, as I’m on Lvl 30 and have decided it’s better to collect autos while awaiting my weekly races online.

  26. OldF@rt

    * He wants to show people the leading edge of technology.
    * He wants to share something beautiful and “cool”.

Great success on both counts – as I write this I’m running my first B-spec Le Mans 24 hours, it’s dawn on the screen and the effects are just breathtaking. Where it’s good, GT5 can be brilliant

    * He wants people to simply enjoy playing his games.

And that’s the problem… GT5 comes across sometimes as a technology demonstrator with a half-arsed game reluctantly stuck on it.

    1. Dan

Lol, funny thing is, my first thought was that he fell short on the first two, and succeeded at the third. Different points of view I guess.

  27. HKS racer

Ok all this philosophic talk sound much like: “ok I got lot of money now, you all bought my GT games, who cares about the update, now I can do whatever I want whenever I want, and who cares about those ugly standard cars. It’s a your problem not mine, you should be “inspired” when you drive my standard cars, now I just want to know how you live and how you die, I don’t give a damn about GT for the next 4 years. My next game will be “The Sims: Yamauchi The God Edition” lol

    1. Ryan

It’s funny, because I didn’t get any of that when I read it. Maybe the voices in your head are adding extra commentary while you read?

  28. Spaghettimonster

in the d.i.c.e context he misused the word mimesis. mimesis is indeed imitation. gt5 player mimic real race drivers. thats at least half of the fascination of gt.

  29. hol

As the boss of PD, his next title is really up to him, personally, I’ve loved all his games so far, yes, even Motor Toon GP on the original playstation. I look forward to seeing whats next?

  30. RESNA86

Wow, some people just can’t tell when a human is trying to live HIS life. He’s not you slave, and believe it or not, he doesn’t owe you anything. I enjoy GT5 and i understand Kaz looks at life in a much larger scope than most of these idiots who demand updates and criticize all day.

    1. johnandbuddy

damn i was just reading through these juvenile comments and was thinking the same thing. you took the words right out of my… fingers. do all you guys realize that you sound like uneducated spoiled american teenagers. man if i was kaz i would just stop releasing gt in the US, or where ever the majority at ungrateful little b1tches.

    2. vardd

Also, The patch and Kaz have mostly nothing in common anymore at this time. He said what he wanted, now people code for him. It isn’t like Kaz is codding the patch.

    3. Jugglingj0hn

Well said! This is exactly how I feel. I would much rather the producer of something I enjoy be a well rounded person than someone with a one track mind, after all producers always bring their life experiences in one way or another into the material they help create.

    4. Super_Colossal

      @Johnandbuddy
America was never mentioned…what are you talking about? Like ANY of the update complainers CANNOT POSSIBLY be from ANYWHERE ELSE. It’s people like you that make me mad. You never see Americans country-bash. Because we don’t generalize. To people like you, one person could do one thing wrong, and happen to reside in the US, and suddenly, everyone in the US is that guy. I don’t know what we as a people did to you, but you need to calm down.

    5. Grute

We Americans generalize and country bash all the time. Common examples: “All muslims are terrorists extremists out to get America”, “the French are worthless stuck up cowards”, “Jews are just money grubing crooks out to controll everything”, etc, etc.
Yes, very inflamitory, nasty things to say, and all things many will swear are true in this country. Heck, you can find plenty of other examples just in the last months worth of articles on this site alone.
But otherwise, I agree with the rest of your post.

    6. BWX

@johnandbuddy “you sound like uneducated spoiled american teenagers.” — FU. You sound like a bigot and a racist. If you don’t agree with me you’re worse than Hitler.

    7. Frank

Uh-hu, cause not agreeing with BWX is worse than attempting to exterminate people over a religion. You’ve got to be kidding……

    8. Sam

Dam! To me, you sound more pathetic than those who criticize Kaz. We are on a GT website aren’t we? So nothing wrong criticizing the game AND the maker if we feel fooled (I won’t even start with everything that’s broke in GT5).
I can understand people expressing their anger because they want the game to change (to get finished actually)…but I can’t understand a guy who insults those people in order to defend a guy who:
      1- is a millionnaire
2- doesn’t give a F*** about the GT community (no communication, no PR,did he ever even post something on GTplanet?; etc..)
3- released an unfinished product after 5 years and God knows how many delays!
4- has a history of not keeping his promises (online on GT4, damages in GT5P, etc…)
5- made the worst game-design decisions ever in GT5 (seriously: GTplanet even had to make a survey to bring together all the criticisms… I had never seen anything like this in my life)
6- Sells less and less copies (there must be a reason…)
      I could go on forever.
Yamauchi should go on flying and driving all around the planet : he deserved it. He just should not make videogames anymore. He forgot what it is a long time ago.

Grute: “All muslims are terrorists extremists out to get America”

I’ve never heard an American say that.

“the French are worthless stuck up cowards”

Well, but that one is TRUE! :-)

“Jews are just money grubing crooks out to controll everything”

Not to stereotype :-), but you hear that a lot more from Arabs and Europeans than Americans.

    10. Dean

Ehhhh, I’ve heard all of the above just on talk radio alone. I think the point however was just to demonstrate a falsehood in Super_Colossal’s statement, and I think that was accomplished regardless of whether or not everyone has heard every example provided.

I don’t think DICE is the audience to discuss life/death and putting that into a game. If Kaz wants to go to church, a temple, or whatever his calling is… go for it. Sometimes success dilutes the tangible. GT5’s enviornmental details show more than attention to the small things most do not consider. His recreations of recognizable landmarks and detail to every blade of grass a player drives by are his imagination attached to reality. He set a standard when stating the GT series a a real driving sim. I commend him on a job well done, but not complete. Kaz is a tech that finally got out the office, drove Nur, met people, went places, and realized there’s more to life than writing code. The gt series seems to run in 2’s. 1 was good 2 had me hooked. 3 had phenominal graphics but 4 was a polished product. 5 seems to follow like 3 did. Probably 6 will be a finalized product of 5. Who knows. I wonder what charities is PD or Kaz a part of? Sorry there goes that random, deep thought again…

  31. pasigiri

I think the talk should’ve been about improving the testing and quality assurance departments at PD. To be honest GT5P with more tracks, cars, and events (along with weather and night/day) would have made for a better GT5 …

Sorry couldn’t help it. So when’s the next update y’all???

    1. pasigiri

… and on the life and death possible future video game comment, I have one thing to say.

      “SAY NO TO DRUGS”

  32. Lambob

Thank you for GT5 on my PS3, Mr. Yamauchi. This is my first GT experience, and I look forward to more, on the PS4 and PS5.

  33. Nero_sol03

This is pretty interesting. I wonder if gt6 we will live through the life of a racer and have to make choices on and off the track

    1. Madman Apex

to me it looked peach/orangy color. nothing wrong with pink or peach, just depends on how you wear it. i dont know about a sweater under a blazer though…

BTW kaz when is the next update?? im guessing feb16, when the next set of super-wicked-awsome seasonal events are due up…

    2. Dan

Definition of “This”: As a demonstrative pronoun, “this” denotes something that is present or near in place or time, or something just mentioned, or that is just about to be mentioned.
As an adjective, “this” has the same demonstrative force as the pronoun, but is followed by a noun; as, this book; this way to town.

      Yep, sounds kinda important…….XD

  34. Rachael

If he wants us to enjoy playing his games, he should make it fun to play… which it was until I hit level 30. Grinding the rest of the game certainly IS NOT fun.

  35. DaftMav

Why can’t he just have goals like “I want to add the best circuits and the coolest real-life roads into GT5″…

    1. Dan

I have the feeling that when this presentation was planned, the thought was that GT5 was going to have had a much better reception than it has. I think it would make more sense if there wasn’t such a widespread feeling that the game is “unfinnished” , or needs to be “fixed”, or at least presented itself has the major leap forward that many thought it was going to be.

  36. Alex

The lack of communication between Polyphony and fans kind of sucks. And it brings to light the difference between Western and Eastern developers.

Turn 10 posts up a weekly blog. I’d like to see the same from PD. Even if it is run by PR. I’d just like to see what’s to come and if they’re actually planning on releasing DLC, or at the very least upgrading some standard cars.

If not that they’ll at least bring down some barriers between them and their fans.

    1. Ezekiel76

I agree with you 100%. Luckily we have GTPlanet which has helped me continue my addiction to GT, but it would be nice to get some info directly from PD.

  37. adeysworld

Whatever! When is the next update?!!

And WTF?! He wants to investigate “the way people live and die, how the live and how they should come to terms with death.” Umm tell him to go play the SIMS. He sounds a little crazy with that idea.

    1. Ryan

It’s not like -you- don’t sound totally barbaric and simple.

Kaz talks about his visions and how connected to reality he feels games can be, and you’re like, “Derp. Who cares, update plz.” Apparently deep thinking doesn’t find an audience with you.

    2. adeysworld

@ryan I know exactly how I come off. It’s called frustration, it stems from playing a half-ass game which had the potential to be so much more. I don’t care about anything he’s thinking about doing right now. Unless it involves him addressing all the faults of his CURRENT game.
I don’t rely on video games to spark “deep thinking”. I rely on more natural things to spur the moment.

    3. CorporateHammer

Well these few responses show there are the “glass half empty” types and the “glass is half full” types. You can focus on flaws of GT or you can focus on the superior achievements of GT. Either way, thinking in general seems to becoming a lost art.
