I don't wanna go off topic, but a quick comment.

2001 had to be one of the worst years in Music. Nothing stood out, and not too much progress was made. Everything is just too jumbled together and it's hard to define anything in music now. I consider these years the depression years of music. There needs to be a new leader. Someone to stand out and change music. I hope the next Nirvana, Beatles, or Led Zepplin comes along soon to save us from this time of bland music, and era of tastelessness. Even though Rock music in general made a resurgence in 2001, there continues to be par and sub par music, (now that the Pumpkins are gone.). Though everything I have said pertains to all forms of music not just rock (except the last sentence).

To find the most recent best era of music you will have to look back to the early '90s, specificaly '91 and '92. The best era of music died in '94 though, and it went out with a bang durring the '94 woodstock. From '94 there was a downspiral in music (even though there were some great bands still around. It was still going down.). And now it's almost at its worst.

Pray to the music gods people. We need a savior. :( :( :(

The only thing I can really vote on as the best would be The Foo Fighters: The one

Tenacious D had a pretty good song too. Wonder boy.

I'd say Tool is the last good band I have seen since Nirvana.

I admit 2001 sucked in terms of music, but there are a few good bands out there. E.g. Tool, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle. i.e not crappy massproduced groups like Linkin Park and Backstreet Boys.

Why aren't bands put together like they used to anymore?

You have a drummer, who wants to start a band so he looks for a lead guitarist, then they go get a lead singer, then a bassist.

I don't want this crap where they have an audition in Los Angeles and they pick the most marketable people to be in a group.

Ugh.

Agreed.

And what is with Linkin Park and their music not being original at all? They explore nothing new in the rock-rap genre yet millions of idiots like them. Atleast try SOMETHING new.

What is it? Do you like the lead singers voice? It sounds like human waste in the form of sound.

Blech.

bah! commercial music sucks... every thing on the radio is just plain boring, be it Creed, Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park... they plain suck, that's it that's all. These bands were created to please a bunch of 14 year old kids who think Rap is bad and Punk is too "heavy" for them...

I listen to the radio every so often. There are a couple alternative stations I listen to and an oldies station.

The rest is just crap.

Though I was listening to XM Radio and it looks pretty sweet.

I turned it on an Vanilla Ice was on. I haven't heard him on the radio in about 10 years, save for pretty Fly For a White Guy.

And the sad part is, I'd rather listen to Vanilla Ice than any post-Smash Offspring. You know, when they started putting out Weird Al-style singles (Pretty Fly, Get A Job, etc...)

And Punk Rock, you sig leads me to believe your name is not an homage to the musical genre, but a sly reference to one DeeJay Punk Roc! Busted! And I think 'Chicken Eye' is a far better album than 'Spoiling it...' Do you agree? Mmmm, Gwen...

Oh yeah, there's a topic:
Band: Toadies (Anyone like these guys?)
Album: Sloan - Pretty Together (SLO-OAN! SLO-OAN!)
Track: Mirwais - Disco Science (Snatch SNDTRK - rabbit chase music)

I don't know why but I actually liked Vanilla Ice.

Anyone like Jimmy Eat World? I think they are pretty cool. I was listening to them about 2 months ago when no one knew about them, and they still aren't very popular actually.

Oh yeah I do, Bleed American and The Middle are great songs, the best on the cd.

Muppets.

You say you are against commercial bands.
Then say you like Jimmy Eats World.
Do you even understand the concept of "commerical".
A band is "commercial" the very second they sign a record contract.
So, all this nu-punk stuff is just as commercial as Linkin Park.

**** guys, you really need to sort your attitude to music out. If it's good, I'll like it. Who gives a t0ss whether it's "commercial" or not? If a band is good enough, they make it. If they're not, they won't. I'm just as big a fan of rock than anyone else, but it's slightly shallow to not listen to anything else. I've recently bought albums by Christian Milian, Deliquent Habits. If it's good to me, I'll buy it, whatever style it is.

And please. You ALL own Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park albums. But your to up your own arrse to admit it.

Not me :p

2001 was a little flat for me musically. I found myself going through a lot of older stuff, like Marilyn Manson and Alice in Chains.

get off your limp linkin Bizkit-loving high horse for a second there manson kid. Just cos they are your idea of a good time doesn't mean they're on everybody else's stereo. Personally I have no problem with them being too commercial - I agree with your point that the minute someone signs a deal they are technically 'commercial' - I just think they are waaaaay too unorigional and fairly talentless. Give me Royksopp; "Melody AM" any day of the week (and no, I don't expect you to know who they are).

Your other point about liking all kinds of stuff is another good one; I personally am into chillout stuff like Morcheeba, Tricky and Portishead, but I also listen to Hip Hop albums like GZA's Liquid Swords and I've got a bunch of other stuff from Simon & Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix and Buena Vista Social Club through to Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Turin Breaks and Coldplay.

Diversity is the key kids.

polyphony: matt wasn't saying he loved the band, he was encouraging a "I like it because I like the sound" idea. Whether that's Bizkit or Hendrix, its somebody's taste and its not for us to determine taste.

However, in my opinion, mentioning Bizkit and Hendrix in the same sentence is blasphemy. LONG LIVE HENDRIX!

hmm...best band....Weezer's revival is amazing. Yes, the Green disc isn't as good as the Blue one, but its still a good solid effort. Also, Tool had an amazing album...Radiohead's Amnesiac, although not their best effort, is still very very good.

How come everyone keeps forgetting System Of A Down?!?!?! Toxicity is an excellent disc.

Echoes and my newfound appreciation of Hendrix (I bought Experience Hendrix and Are You Experienced? last year) don't count as much, because I think this should be a thread about new music this year. However, "When The Tigers Broke Free" puts the whole The Wall album into a new level of understanding for me.

Linkin Park's OK--I like the Hybrid Theory disc myself, but I'll wait to call them a good band. Lots of bands have surges of creativity and get one excellent--or even good--album out there. I'm waiting for their next album to call it good.

Surprise of the year--Tenacious D. Gotta love The D.

Just my rather long winded $.02 :)

I said massproduced trash. I don't think I would could consider JImmy Eat World massproduced trash because they have had a few albums out already and pretty much no one knew about them.

Besides, they weren't put together by some audition. They have been a group since Junior High.

Huh? I got no clue where that came from, it's beginning of a Lagwagon song, that's why i used it... i don't know where it came from, i thought it was funny, it shows the prejudices people can have when they see a guy with blue hairs, and who has more piercings and tatoos than skin... Yep, that's me allright!

And i'd rather listen to J.E.W than Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit...

OK PunkRock, my mistake... it's also the intro to a Deejay Punc-Roc song, so I put that with your username. Put 2 and 2 together, came up with 7. :) I believe the quote is from an episode of 'Quincy' where they were investigating a mosh-related death or something...

Gorillaz, Tool, and Rob Zombie get my votes for now. Might change though.

I liked 2000 better, Moby and BT dominated my stereo for months. Gorillaz picked up where they left off and went one step further. If you haven't checked out that album, you owe it to yourself.
