Vatanen will contest the FIA Elections - I think this is great news. He is liked and admired all over the world, and his experience both as a driver that won the WRC, Pikes Peak and the Dakar, and as a politician, will be of great help.

Besides, having no connection to the Formula 1 World is also good, I think the "downside" of it (lack of experience in F1 antics and politics) will work in his favour and allow him to be completely free of "old friends", alliances and untold favours.

Besides admiring him as a driver, even when he was the rival of my fav alltime rally driver (Markku Alen), I always liked him as a man.

I am a member of the portuguese club that belongs to the FIA, I already emailed them saying that I hope they will support Vatanen and vote for him.

PS - And I hope that the WRC, with Vatanen, ceases to be the forgotten child of the FIA, and may recover the glorious days when Vatanen raced there.

At last, relief. I would vote for him, definitely, and I expect a lot of F1 fans and the FOTA themselves to do so as well.

Hmm, Vatanen may not be so perfect though....remember when everyone thought we couldn't get worse than Balestre and we got....Mosley?

But I suppose change is good, its just a shame it doesn't happen more often.

The important thing is, will he restore balance to the world of motorsport, more specifically F1?

I always figured Vatanen was one of those guys who just made the sport. Ask anyone to name a rally driver, and Ari Vatanen would probably be one of the first names people thought of. I wasn't around back in his heydey, but he seemed to have almost too much charisma for one man. If he's remained that way since, I think that at the very least he could change the FIA's image from evil browbeaters to something much more positive.

Now Todt confirms he is a candidate.

Full of praise for Mosley. And, apparently with the support of member clubs from New Zealand, the UK and the US :indiff:

I urge gtp forum members from those countries to email those clubs, I really think the FIA needs to change and Todt is too tied to Mosley (and Mosley's "establishment") to do it.

EDIT - Changed the thread's title, originally about Vatanen's candidacy.

Yes, but where has he been all this time? He's ben closesly associated with Ferrari for years until what appeares to have been a falling-out with Luca, but since then, he's dropped off the radar. I think a lot of FIA members would be looking at the current situation and wondering how we got here; nominating the man Mosley recommends and praises him in return hardly sounds like the best thing for the FIA as a whole. Maybe I'm just being hopeful here, but Vatanen isn't just a rally driver turned politician: a lot of his policies in the EU have been centered around road safety, which falls in line with some of the FIA's policies.

Plus, he's been campaigning in the Formula One paddock in Germany ...

Even if Todt was a good candidate on merit (which he's not), his reign would be constantly riddled with bias regardless if it happens, because of his connection to Ferrari.
At least with Vatanen we get someone who should be unbiased and at least won't look biased in the eyes of the public, unlike Todt.

Hun200kmh, make a poll asking us who would we vote for. It would be interesting to say the least!

Awww, am I the only one who thinks Todt wouldn't be so bad?
Nope, Ferrari_Tifoso seems to agree with you ...

Hmmm, just realised: Ferrari_Tifoso, a Ferrari fan. Jean Todt, former Ferrari collaborator. Should have seen it coming.

It seems Ari doesn't like the game Max is playing:
Vatanen unhappy at Mosley stance

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde - Friday, July 17th 2009, 14:15 GMT

Former world rally champion Ari Vatanen has criticised the manner by which Max Mosley has gone public in his support for candidate Jean Todt in the future FIA presidential elections.

Mosley announced earlier this week that he was to step down from his current role at the end of October. In his letter explaining the reasons behind the move, he also said that the best man to replace him would be Todt.

Vatanen has questioned the ethics of such a move, and thinks that it proves that Todt will merely be representing the 'old era'.

"Although I have criticised the FIA strongly, I have never aimed it at Mosley personally," Vatanen told Spanish newspaper AS.

"But it's not good that a leader stays in the post for a long time, and when that happens, the best thing is a change. And I represent that change, a new era with more freshness.

"On the contrary, Jean Todt represents the old era, and it's not right that Max wants to impose a new leader, and that he uses the power of the federation to support his campaign. The FIA is not a kingdom; it's a republic where the leaders are chosen democratically.

"At Ferrari they don't want Todt to be president, and so they have told me, because they think they sport would lose credibility. The same would happen if it was Ross Brawn or Flavio Briatore running. The president of the FIA must be someone neutral."

Despite Vatanen's claims about Ferrari not wanting Todt, AUTOSPORT understands that the Italian team has expressed no preference in who wins the FIA election, and is adopting a neutral stance regarding the situation.
Meanwhile, Vicky Chandhok had confirmed he won't be running, because he doesn't want to contest an election and would only take the role if he had the full support of Ecclestone, the teams and the incumbent President.

I "fixed" AutoSport.com's current Top Story for them...

I just don't believe it's humanly possible for him to be neutral considering his past. If he gets in, he could do more damage to F1 than Mosley has in recent years :grumpy:

I voted Todt just because I like to throw spanners into various works when the mood takes me.

I voted for Todt because, honestly, i really don't think Vattenen's in it to really help the world of motorsport: He's in it to save his political career. The timing of his canidacy for FIA president is just too conspicuous for my tastes: Six months after he lost his Finnish Parliment seat he turns back to motorsport? It almost seems like he's trying to lick his political wounds and gain momentum for a possible run for Finland's Prime Minister in three or so years...

I dunno, i just think that Todt's canidacy seems more genuine to me...

Who ever wants or will bring F1 and WRC to America I would vote for. I voted for Vatanen though because I respect his skill.

Ari Vatanen... great rally driver whether in the WRC or the Paris-Dakar, would be interesting to see him run the FIA with his extensive knowledge... Jean Todt... I think would be overkill business-like and too uptight for some reason...
