Our images, which are based on top-secret information, show how the car will look when it makes its debut in March next year. We also have the first scoop pictures of a pre-production prototype model being given a thorough workout by engineers at an unnamed race track.

So far, Ford has only dared to drive boxy prototypes in public. But behind the scenes, designers have already put the finishing touches to a supermini that insiders have described to us as the most spectacular looking small car the firm has ever built.

The Fiesta is based on Ford's latest B2xx small car platform, and the model is currently being engineered alongside the upcoming Mazda 2, which was first revealed by Auto Express in Issue 928. The Ford will be built in Cologne, Germany, and shares much of its chassis architecture and key components with the new baby Mazda.

As well as the adventurous new look, the Fiesta will be longer and wider than the current car, and offer a more spacious cabin.

The blue oval is investing heavily in quality, too, and it has been reported that the dull plastics and monotone design of past Fiesta cabins have been banished for good.

Safety features will include front, side and head airbags, as well as the latest electronic brake force distribution and traction control systems.

There will be no shortage of luxury, either, and to build on the current car's hi-tech functionality, the new Fiesta will be one of the first European Fords to offer the firm's Microsoft-developed Sync technology. The set-up offers MP3 player and Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity.

At launch, the car will offer a five-strong engine line-up. Petrol-powered cars will come with a range of 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8-litre Duratec SCi engines, which feature direct injection for improved fuel economy. Two diesels will be available - a 1.4 and a 1.6-litre TDCi, which have been developed with Peugeot. It's thought both oil-burning units will employ the latest pollution-reducing particulate filters.

Shortly after the new model's launch, an ST-badged hot hatch will be unveiled. This is expected to be powered by a 170bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which features the same SCi technology.

However, the story will not end there, as Ford has some big plans in store. The development of the new Fiesta is central to a much wider plan of action when it comes to the company's small car line-up.

This will see the Fusion replaced at the same time by a fresh model, which is expected to be badged the B-MAX. It will rival the new breed of supermini-MPVs such as the Nissan Note and Skoda Roomster.

The B2xx platform will also be used in the US for the first time with a car called the Ecosport. And it has even been rumoured that Volvo - which is part of the Ford family - is considering an entry into the supermini market with the same chassis.

PARTY!

I saw these things (the older ones) all over Dublin when I was there. If Ford is smart then they WILL bring this over. I bet other small car sales will determine that. Yet the only problem with the styling is that it wouldnt fit into the "Gilette"-style grille Ford has adopted. This Fiesta looks strikingly similar to the Ford S-Max of Europe. I would say fat chance on seeing this thing here...:grumpy:

BUT WAIT! I just read the last 3 paragraphs of the article....maybe their is a chance we will see a car like this in the states and maybe they wont snuff us out of the 1.6 SC engine!

Can't wait for this to come out in Aus. i'm looking at getting a small car when i'm about 21 to 22. I'm curenly almost 18 so inabout 3 years i will be looking to get rid of my 2001 model proton waja which i just got cheap.

Hopefully by then they will be on the used market being 1 or 2 years old. I would also look at the mazda 2 if they are using the same base. And maybe honda could come out with something instead of their current box on wheels.

I would like an st model (most likely to badeged xr4 turbo here) but that would be out of a finishing uni student budget. Plus insurance would cost a 22 year old more than the car.

Wow, Europeans certainly get the good looking Ford products, don't they? I'm happy to hear the Fiesta is on the way to America, a very smart decision for the troubled company. Against the Fit and the Versa, this could get interesting. Although, I don't know if I like the name "Ecosport"...

It looks terrible.

It is nowhere near as good looking as the current ST and it's getting bigger? The current Fiesta is already considerably bigger than the previous models (Perhaps it's just the different shape, but it certainly looks bigger).

This thing looks great...now why doesn't the US get THIS car? I bet this would be a fantatic driving little car.

Just so you can see the current one...

Miles better in my opinion.

The Gillette Grille would fit nicely on that one, too....That's probably what 90% of the EcoSport's Styling will look like...

But what's with the Skunk Stripes?

Yes 100% agreed. I would probably have that Fiest ST if it were in America while I was shopping for a car (and settled for the Focus). The Fiesta is such an awsome little car. Great competition with the Yaris, Versa, and te Fit.

Go-faster stripes :dopey:

I like the go-faster stripes. Reminds me of the GT500 stripes.

Best looking small car the firm has built? Hello? Puma?

I completely agree there.

(Puma FTW!)

...But, the current Fiesta certainly is a looker as well. After seeing the car a time or two on Top Gear, I have to admit that my appreciation for it has grown quite a bit. The new style is a halfway-decent evolution of the current car, obviously with some style features from the Mondeo thrown in. I'm eager to see how the Gillette grille will translate to her, as it hasn't worked out too well with the Focus and the Fivehundred...

As it stands I prefer the current Fiesta, but it could grow on me. I'm in total agreement regarding the Puma, it's the best looking small Ford ever.

that photoshop looks terrible. Im thinking of gettin a fiesta now, and then getting rid of it once I have my one years NCB. I chose it because its cheap, cheap to fix and maintain and its meant to be one of the most fun to drive superminis on the market.

Offtopic.

The new clio interior is really really nice on the initiale model .

They both have 4 wheels. Other than that they're both 5 door hatchbacks. They really arn't that similar imo.

This is the Ecosport over here:

Cute little car, that... emphasis on "little"... the Ecosport is about as big as a Suzuki Jimny... although I'd take the Jimny over that poseur for its actual off-road ability.

Kia Rio? Not a bad little car... still, I don't doubt that it's nowhere near as fun as the current and upcoming Fiestas. The steering and chassis are decent, but not outstanding, and the suspension tuning really really needs a lot of work.

I do hope Ford brings the next-generation Fiesta here, whether in Fiesta guise or as the new Mazda Demio (but considering the price premium for new Fords over new Mazdas, maybe a Demio version would be better).

That actually looks really nice. 👍 Looking over the rest of the posts here, it seems that Ford has a solid history of nice-looking small cars: Puma, SportKa, Focus 1 & 2, Fiesta, and now this Fiesta. Even with dinky little 1.6/1.8L engines, it looks like a job well done. I think even with a 150HP 2.0L, a Fiesta ST in this form should be quite nice.

Still, it's a shame Ford can't figure out that they could easily double their sales in this segment by bringing them to the US! :grumpy:
