First thing I would change is the auto-switch of your players when the opponent have the ball. Set this to "Air Balls" or "Manual". It helped me tons!
You can also tinker a bit with the other settings to make it suit your playstyle more.
In my opinion, you should spend more time in the practice arena than doing skill games, but playing matches will always be the best practice.
Do you play online or against AI?
Playing against people online, will 99 of 100 times require a different style of play as the AI is very predictable, yet always in the correct position and depending on difficulty they can be very difficult to play an "online playstyle" against.
You will also notice against the AI (and also online) that suddenly both your players and the opponents players just "fell asleep" during match (not necessarily at the same time though). This will make you score easier goals than normal, but also concede easy goals. It's just something that you will have to get used to, and try to pay attention to when it happens.
Example: You play against the AI on World Class, you've struggled all of first half to even get in a good position, and the 2nd half starts the same way. Now you're thinking that you should just give up, but like in real life, the AI will "fall asleep" for a period during a match (1st or 2nd half, its random). And in the 65th and 69th minute you suddenly score 2 way to easy goals. This will also happen the other way around if you're not paying attention. The AI can for the most of the match seem like a bunch of hopeless chickens running around kicking dust, but suddenly they score 2 goals out of nowhere. Really annoying.
