When we bought our house, in October 2007, we knew it needed work. Major work.

Here's the outside, at the back:

And here's the kitchen:

And now...

Conservatory design & build: Mozolowski & Murray. It's 4m long, by 3m wide. Underfloor heating, full opening windows, double doors, and thermostatic roof vents with rain sensors.

Kitchen: Moben. With extensive direction from me: I basically said "Shut up while I tell you what you'll be building for me". The range is a Rangemaster, Samsung fridge, Smeg dishwasher. Granite worktops from Granite R Us, and slate-effect porcelain tiles from B&Q. The floor was more expensive than the worktops.

We moved the washing machine from the kitchen to the downstairs cloakroom, which was massive, and had not only a loo but a bidet as well. We didn't really feel that a bidet offered value, so we put in a washing machine that can do twice the load of the previous one in a single cycle.

We've just got a light to put up above the dining table, and a second coat of paint on the kitchen walls to do, and then we're finished.

We started planning it in October, so it's taken nearly ten months from project mandate to project completion. It's been a hard slog, but I'm really happy with it. We just need to get furniture and a B&W Zeppelin for the conservatory, and we'll have a perfect adult space.

Wow! That is really nice. I like that kind of style more than the traditional dark wood floors, dark wood cabinets, unexciting colors type of house. The sleeker, cooler look is much better IMO.

Nicely done, Giles!

You're right - the dangling incandescent lamp in front of the fridge needs to go. :p

What a charming house you have, Giles! And I love the stainless steel paired with the glossy black.

Very nice kitchen; is it me or do you have a fairly large kitchen? Every time I see a kitchen in a TV program on BBC America, it looks to be just slightly larger than a typical bathroom.

It's always better to get rid of the bidet, they're terrible at washing clothes. Or so I've heard.

Thanks all for the kind comments. :)

Yes, we've always been modernists. We much prefer clean lines, as you can see from the complete lack of ornate guff in the conservatory design.

We've got an uber-cool one. It's three lamps on a brushed steel bar that you can raise and lower on a wire string. To switch it on you just touch the bar, then touch again to dim.

You could fit a LAN in there... :D

I'm sure. The kitchen & conservatory are the only rooms with no CAT5 though, although they are in reach of both of the wireless networks in the house.

Why yes. Yes you could :D

:)

I knew you'd like it! Apart from your hatred of Gehry, I think you and I share similar tastes in architecture.

Yes, it's what we call a "dining kitchen". The ones you're seeing on the interior decoration shows are just kitchens, and aren't meant for eating in. It's turned out much less of a "two zone" room than I'd envisaged. I thought that the cooking area would feel much more enclosed than it does.

Jonathan was beginning to show interest in the bidet, but he's too big to be bathed in it.

Yummy 👍 We've just had our kitchen redone, and your pictures only add to the evidence that granite is worth the extra cost. And I love those Smeg dishwashers - they just look fantastic compared to all the other white good style ones in Currys. Unfortunately we decided our ugly Bosch one actually has nothing wrong with it (aside from dreary aesthetics). Bah. Nice range too - do I spot a griddle? ;) And I recognise that gas barbeque too - The B&Q Bondi, per chance?

Wow, I really need a life.

Looks excellent, good work 👍

Excellent piece of kit the Zepplin, but have you considered one of these...

...strongly recommend having a listen.

Scaff

The financial controller will veto that one right off. All speakers are ugly apparently.

Very nice! Its amazing what a small addition like that can do to make everything look so nice.
