FITT Car of the Month - January '14 - Mazdaspeed Atenza '05

It's so slugish stock you don't really notice how bad the understeer really is.
Dial the power way up, chop the weight down and you suddenly start seeing all the issues it has.
Personally think it may be another one of the cars that PD got the base stats messed up on.:odd:

Ballast: 200kg @ full rear

NOTES: Its a pretty straight-foward tune. No fancy tricks to get it to go. Steers great, with a touch of oversteer if your not carefull with the throttle on corner-exit. All tuning was done at Deep Forest using a G27 wheel, no clutch. I suck at the Nordshleif but i managed to get a 7:48 on SH...not sure if thats good for a 493pp car or not.

Feedback extremely welcome!

I see you adapted some of my Bee R R32 GTR replica setup - similar damper and ARB + LSD :) I'll give the Atenza tune some laps, wonder if the LSD ( NISMO GT Pro Carbon ) works just as good on the Atenza. Congrats on the Tune of the Week

Thats ridiculous, high power AWD cars understeer under throttle like there's no tomorrow(untill the addition of active center diffs). Especially a floppy family car like an Atenza. I have driven a 400whp EVO, I couldnt believe how much understeer it had...must be a glitch!

Yea i used my tweaked version of your tune as my base tune. The LSD is really what makes this car(and any AWD car) great. Big props to RIDOX!

I'll have a crack at this tomorrow, 4wd's seem much nicer to drive in GT6, no longer the understeering beasts of yesterday

Car: Mazda Mazdaspeed Atenza '05

Stock (+ Oil Change)

Power: 281 Bhp @ 5500 Rpm / 40.6kgfm @ 3000rpm

Weight: 1500kg (63 : 37)

PP: 446

Tyres: SH

Initial Impressions:

Understeer, lots and lots of understeer! The car feels like an old audi, the engine is really far forward which screws up the balance (I wonder if this is meant to be better balanced by driver weight IRL?). The car presents fairly predictable 4WD characteristics, tons of grip but not exactly electrifying to drive. The engine feels a little bit underpowered and wheezy but does pull quite well in the lower rev ranges. I'm sure as a real world family car this would be very usable and plenty fast enough to put a smile on your face, but as a track car it leaves a lot to be desired.
Tuning:

Wheel / Joypad: PS3 controller
Power:
394 BHP / 56 kgfm
Weight: 1430 kg
Performance Points: 500
Tires: CH
Bakes: Race 5/5

Suspension: (Height-Adjustable, Fully-Customisable Suspension)

Ride Height:
Front: 90 Rear: 95
Spring Rate: Front: 8.74 kg Rear: 9.97 kg
Dampers (Compression): Front: 1 Rear: 1
Dampers (Extension): Front: 2 Rear: 2
Anti-Roll Bars: Front: 1 Rear: 2
Camber Angle (-): Front: 1.3° Rear: 0.0°
Toe Angle: Front: -0.05° Rear: 0.21°
Brakes: Racing Upgrade F:5 R:5

Drivetrain (Fully Customisable Transmission)
Speed: 149 mph
Differential Gear: Fully Customisable Mechanical Limited-Slip Diff
Initial Torque: F=5 R=18
Acceleration Sensitivity: F=40 R=42
Braking Sensitivity: F=5 R=10
Clutch & Flywheel: Twinplate
Propeller Shaft: Carbon
Centre Differential: Standard

Power

Oil change:
Yes
Power Limiter:
100%
Engine Tuning: Stage 1
Computer: Standard
Exhaust: Semi-Racing
Exhaust Manifold: Standard
Catalytic Converter: Sports
Intake Tuning: Intake tuning
Turbo Kit: Stage: Low RPM
Nitrous Oxide (N2O): No
Body
Weight Reduction: Stage 3
Bonnet: Carbon
Windows: Weight Reduction
Ballast: 200kg
Ballast position: + 50

Final Impressions

A completely changed creature, now feels light and agile despite its considerable weight. It retains the 4WD stability under acceleration but is not so hindered by understeer making it much more fun to fling around.

Feedback welcome, it may no be the fastest car around but it is now a lot more fun.
Enjoy!

It was faster than my previous tune, I took between 4 and 5 seconds of each lap around B-Hatch in the World Circuit tour with the pp at 500/bhp at 407. The gearbox was changed from std to FC, as per your tune, and I used most of your settings. It was indeed easier to drive, and felt lighter, and as you see from my quicker times - against more powerful cars - this is a giant killer. Thank you. I went from 6th place to 1st.

If the mazdaspeed atenza is a floppy family car then all 4 door sedans are. In reality it is far from a family car. In fact it runs toe to toe with STI and EVO any day. Tell me, Do you consider them family cars? a standard mazda atenza is a family car. A mazdaspeed atenza is a work of street/track racing art. However gt6 makes you pay more for it and crapped on its true characteristics unfortunately. Making it seem slow and pointless when really it should be favored over most of the sport sedans out there by far
