Flight Simulators - Add your own screenshots

Not sure if the problem is on my end but all I see is a bunch of red X's.

Same here. Either his photobucket album is not set to allow hotlinking, or it may have to do with how he has them linked:

s11.photobucket.com/albums/a194/danjama/?action=view&current=(img name).jpg

I use photobucket and have never used ?action=view&current= in my links to my photos.

YEah im not getting anything.

Hey guys, any sites where you can get tips on flying in FSX? I have a joystick, and love the game, but for me, Landing after a long flight is very hard. I can never seem to get the angle, speed, or anything right! I dont think I can land much bigger then a cessna!

Hey sorry about that the problem was the action-current thing in the link, their now showing if you want to check em out :)

I see no pictures or X's whatsoever..
That's because you're probably using Firefox.

Edit: Nice IL-2 pictures, man! I have the game but I still have to master my flying skills before jumping to combat flying.

Here's a few from my long term love Il2 1946, been playing since iL2 original

Hope this is allowed, i noticed the thread is mainly FSX but variety is good. IL2 is not just a combat simulator.

I also have some edited ones if anybody would like to see them.

I'm loving your pictures man! Some of them look like actual photos. I'm going to have to pick up this for my old man he'll love it.

Thanks fellas glad you like it really is worth the time.

I'll also point out there are now mods but not in the usual sense. Most of the mods are made my authors who really strive to improve the game, and the mods are also approved before being allowed for public usage. There are now mods such as improved smoke, improved Ai, improved flak/AA and a few other things that really improve an already amazing game. It's not like an open source where any guy can mod it so everything is uber. Everyone is either using the mods or not using the mods online so it's always an even battlefield. Anyway i may dig up some more pictures later, i'm feeling nostalgic :dopey:

I decided to have a browse through this thread, and funnily enough it was enough to make me download the Demo to FSX. It seems pretty good, I can't run it to full specs since I'm on a laptop, I'm struggling with the actual playing of the game since I don't have a joystick like I used too. The controls are pretty confusing and I tend to end up clicking every switch until something happens.

Get a flight stick (any joystick really) and control will become all simple, check keyboard assignments there is all sorts of shortcuts to engine starts, pushback etc.

I don't remember most of them off the top of my head as the complex addon aircraft I use can't and wouldn't use them. Pushback is Shift+P (then 1 to get pushed left and 2 for right, from memory)

Just found this thread, here's a few shots

FSX (I was on the Beta team for FSX so in a way this is my favourite version, it's too bad that Aces are no more):

WOW! You must have a monster rig to be able to run FSX like that.

not really..

Q6600 o/C 3.6Ghz 4GB Ram

optimally configured :)

very few services disabled.

If any of you have doubted what FTX can do, take a look at

this.

sit back, grab a cuppa and enjoy!

Please don't ;)
Those shots are marvellous. Almost lifelike even.

o.k.

a few more...

Right I've hogged this enough...

Let's see some more then.

Mr. gslooney- Wow!!!! Great pictures.

I'm assuming that is FTX you are running in those pictures? What else if any mods are you using. I just finally now entered the world of flight simming a couple weeks ago with FSX and am trying to learn how to get the most of it so any help would be much appreciated. Looking at your pics and that video you linked to just blew my mind! Also, what flight controllers would you recommend.

Thanks,

Dan

P.S. I swear that lear jet dusk shot is real. Isn't it?

LOL Dan, it's "as real as it gets" with a little help from there friends and the community that is Flight simulator..

Where do i begin in the mod stakes.. well before that not all of the shots above are FSX, several are in fact fs9(2004) theres some great freeware available for that as well as fsx.

I consider that with the FSX engine MS created a Sim for VFR (visual flight Rules) flyers. This sim excels massivly in this area, which happens to be how I like to fly, low and fast or slow taking in the view.

From a MOD POV:

I consider the following to be a must have:

A decent terrain mesh, there are several free ones around, a Replacement weather system. look at active sky(payware but amazing).

From an Aircraft point of view, let me know what your into, there are some amazing payware aircraft out there, and there are some amazing free aircraft. look around before you shell out your cash often you'll find a nice free version, and there are frankly some howlers in the payware section.

What's wrong with FSX out the box... the mesh (terrain profile) is poor in places, The landclass (description of what tile fsx should depict in a spot of the earth, think painting by numbers the black and white canvas with the numbers is the landclass, and the texture sets are the paints) is often wrong.

The std texture sets are limited and as such it gets a bit repedative.

Also the AI aircraft are modelled o the ones you can fly.. so they have way too many polygons- result your frame rate will plumit near airports with the ai on.

Also Don't expect to be able to play FSX with "all the sliders to the right" without extensive modding and exquisite choice of hardware and configuration.. it's not going to happen.

Next

Forget about frame rates... repeat after me

forget about frame rates..

forget about frame rates.. aim for smooth and turn of the frame counter.. seriously.

In my honest opinion the peak of FSx at this time, is the work done by ORBX and flight terrain.com look at that video and what they have achieved with Australia.. with a good cloud texture set and weather engine frankly it's as good as it gets. The mod scene in Australia is amazing so they have hundreds of photoreal airports available and moded for free!

Check out http://orbxsystems.com/

"Orbx terrain technology launched in SimJET B737-800 Commercial Simulator

October, 2008 - SimJET Training Systems (SJTS), an Orbx shareholder, this month launched first operations of their commercial B737-800 training platform at their Archerfield Airport facility south of Brisbane. The impressive 210-degree curved FOV display system, dubbed STSvision, projects Orbx-developed 1m terrain database imagery called STSview, in the first commercially licensed use of Orbx terrain technology in the world. Using highly accurate Orbx-developed renditions of YMML Melbourne, YMLT Launceston and YSCH Coffs Harbour, SJTS are able to accurately provide full ground and approach procedures and unlimited weather scenarious using Orbx technology."

this is what the FSX code is based on so it's that accurate! nothing touches what these guys have done.

The first photoreal shots you saw are from http://scenarialpinifsx.blogspot.com/

If you email Frank, he will email you the location to download his scenery from.. just don't share it. it's free so no need to share it, frank will let you download it foc anyway.

Anyway, if there are any questions ask away, i'll give you my opinnion.

Ohh and if you want to know the best way to set up your systems for simulations and games...

it's here make sure you read the whole threas the guy who wrote it's a genius..

too be honest I do it and follow those rules on my systems and have done for years, and I've never had a problem.

Where did you get this DC10/MD10?

I am use FSX different, I don't care much for VFR (though it is nice looking at the pics), I mostly fly mid-long range high altitude IFR with many mods (PMDG, RC4 etc) just for that reason.

I have hardly any scenery mods

Hey GSL- Thanks a ton for the advice and links, that will really help me a lot.

As far as aircraft I like, I would say generally that I'm interested in just about anything. Probably mostly interested in lighter, more flyable planes that let you feel the physics model better, especially older historic aircraft like WWII fighters and such. I already purchased Wings of Power II from Shockwave but have yet to install. Looks to be as good as it gets. I also like Cessna-types, military jets too.

I have already learned that framerates are not as important in flight sims like they are in racing sims. As long as I'm getting 20 or so I'm pretty happy.

Having lived in Southern California since the 70's I just ordered MegasceneryX Southern California edition as it seems to get great reviews.

What impact on performance do these sceneries, weather systems, etc. have on the sim? I'm running an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM, 8800GTS 512, Vista.

Also I'm looking at a Saitek X52 or the Aviator. Any input there?

Thanks for your help!

Dan

Dan just a quick note, the Saitek X52 is fantastic, it's what i use, and is very accurate and reliable. I'll comment ont he otheraspects later.
Cheers
GSL

Got lucky and found a Saitek X52 at a Circuit City liquidation sale for $65!

What's the difference between Active Sky X vs. their graphics pack. Doesn't Active Sky give you the graphics updates in the clouds or just the weather system?

hi Fi Simulations have a number of S/W Products.

Active Sky X works with FSX only, and is a weather engine. takes data from reliable sources and feeds it into the Sim allowing the sim to depict the weather. it will also interpolate weather if there is no data, so you always get something fed into the sim, rather than flying in a storm say, then max visibiliy blue skies because theres no local met station.

X Graphics can compliment ASA or be used Standalone in FSx.
X Graphics replaces the texture files in FSX with sets chosen by the user. louds, runways etc

This is done before you fly. generally the clouds may look better etc.

So ASX = FSX weather no change o cloud look.
X Graphics = no weather, but change the look of clouds, runway lights, tarmac, etc.

Competting with X graphics you have Flight Environment X, this allows you to replace the cloud texture sets with ones from a theme, or to create your own. It also controls the water.

then there is Realenvironment extreme, this does it all, weather, cloud and other texture sets, water.

So much choice...

Are Flight Environment X and Realenvironment Pro too heavy on the system? Heavier than the regular FSX graphics?

First an appology..

Real Environment Pro is a ground texture product for fs9!

real environment extreme is the fsx product I was refering to in my description. I'll change that in the post below in a second.

On both of these add on's you can specify the texture size used for the replacement textures. So you can tune the quality vs load for your system.

Remember that FSX is CPU starved. and Memory Bandwidth is an issue also.
That's why the new i7's are getting great reviews with FSX. they are better on both of these counts.

anyway.

I'd be surprised if you saw any difference running these on a properly setup and spec system, in fact in some cases the result is a slight increase in smoothness. (don't expect what you ran fs9 on to deliver the same visuals in fsx, it wont happen. there is so much going on in fsx).

Also you can always reduce the texture size if you think it's an issue, also remember that if you have a fairly high spec card, the drivers are not always optimised for lower settings and somemtimes turning the spec up is better !

Go and review them, study the options. there are fanboys for both these addons.

my only comment would be the developers of realenvironment extreme appear to be more vocal in the community, it takes them time to get patches out but they return emails, etc.

Don't expect this from FlightEnvironment X they used to but no more, I'm told from a reliable source :nervous:, they don't even provide an update on there beta forums!

I use ASX for my weather, good to get the weather for both FSbuild (flight plan builder) and to enter into the FMC (Flight Management Computer), also nice to print out the weather forcasts for the flight plan and check Xgauge mid air.

@gslooney: Do you have any experience with AS Advanced?

no sorry I've not gone there yet.

I have ASX, FEX and REX ... that's enough :)

well, i have CFS1/2 and i love to play them, i'm not a pro or super-pilot but i love to play it, if anyone plays CFS1/2, can you tell me how to take pics along the flight???
I play with a joystick, the Thrustmaster T.hotasflight or something like that beucause the keyboard play its to confuse to me!!!
i alredy played FSX but in a friends house, its great, and i love IL-2, great game to.
can you tell me where to download the FSX demo?
