In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.

Muslims and many other Christians -- including some evangelicals -- are fighting the initiative.

The church launched a YouTube channel to disseminate its messages.

"I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they're on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?" Jones asks in one of his YouTube posts.

"No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil."

The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.

"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

Dove's Facebook page, set up for the September event, has more than 1,600 fans.

"Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in it's [sic] place -- the fire!" the page says.

But another Facebook group with more than 3,100 fans says it stands "against the disrespect and intolerance that these people have for the Muslim people" and encourages people to report Dove's page to Facebook.

Targeting another group it calls "godless," the Dove center is also hosting a protest against Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe, who is openly gay, on Monday at Gainesville's City Hall. The group previously fought -- unsuccessfully -- to derail Lowe's election campaign.

"We protest sexual perversion because the Bible protests it. ... What is acceptable to today's leadership becomes acceptable to tomorrow's society," the church says in its blog entry about the event.

Lowe and other government figures and media outlets received e-mails from the church about the event, The Gainesville Sun reported. Lowe isn't concerned with Monday's event.

"I've got other things to do," he said, The Sun reports.

On the outreach center's front lawn, alongside a sign reading "Aug. 2 Protest, No Homo Mayor, City Hall," stands not just one, but three signs bearing the slogan "Islam is of the Devil."

One of the signs -- one reading "Islam" on one side, "Devil" on the other -- was vandalized. On its blog last week, the church said the sign will be replaced.

"This is private property and vandalism is a crime here in America," the blog says. "In Islam, many actions that we consider to be crimes are encouraged, condoned or sheltered under Islamic teaching and practice, though. Another reason to burn a Quran."

Wow, just wow. Appauling.

What do you guys think?

My friend and I were just talking about this. The guy's a nut. It's like a Jewish person wanting to burn Christian Holy texts. What exactly will this have to do anything with 911?!?! I would be surprised at anyone who agrees with the nut. Whoever does agree with this nut, will become a nut, and will be cracked. The disagreeing people will be the nutcrackers.

Apparently the guy's own daughter thinks he is crazy, she also compred the church he runs to a cult.

The only thing that will come out of this is more tension.

Maybe the whole 2012 thing isn't such a bad thing after all if it's true.

Edit: The quote in my sig really fits well in this conversation.

The quote that I find odd is that he says Islam is a religion of the devil, because he says that Muslims never look happy and it's a joyless religion.

My old economics teacher was never happy and void of joy. Does that make him of the devil?

If I could go down to Florida and protest, I would.

Edit: The quote in my sig really fits well in this conversation.

He probably thinks that Gandhi is of the devil too.

Some copypasta:

I hope I'm not the only one who sees the irony in condemning extremism by committing extremism. Also, protests of this sort could probably be classified as hate speech anyways, which would make it unprotected by the First Amendment.

The really odd thing about this is that, unlike most idiots of this caliber/persuasion, this Jones dork seems to be able to actually tell the difference between "Muslim" and "Islamic Fundamentialist," but he simply doesn't care. Which is... progress?

I'm not even upset by it. Crazies & idiots are all over the place. I guess I am upset that something like this can become a mega-news.

Just as the terrorists on 9/11 in no way represent Muslims, these clowns in no way represent the rest of us Christians.

Pretty ridiculous. I avoid paying any attention to crazy fools like this because that's exactly what they're looking for.

The guy is totally within his rights btw. American free speech and all that jazz. It doesn't bother me with what he sais and does because it's just another example of religious idiocy.

Actually, he is violating other laws outside "free speech" mainly fire codes. If he does go through with it he could get fined, not much more though.

Also, the first amendment voids itself if the speech is a direct threat to someone, which this guy seems to getting rather close to.

Eeexactly. I've been avoiding the whole debate on the grounds that I'm going to pretend I didn't hear about him in the first place - there's enough lunatic 'ministers' in Redneckville USA getting the media's attention as it is.

Having said that, I'd be very tempted to pop down there and set up shop opposite with nothing but a few veggie microwave meals and hold a "Burn a Quorn" day. I've tasted their fake mince, it's horrible.

Unlucky for you that I heard this on an Australian radio statio about 2 hours ago.

Edit: Damn I thought you were American lol. Ahh well guilt trip remains.

I just feel sorry for this guy. What a dumbass. No wonder some Middle Eastern people think some Americans are dumb. Its people like this dude who wreck the other nice Americans' reputations in the Middle East. Burn a Quran day? I don't care. He'll eventually find his way to hell one way or the other.

The biggest fools in this whole drama are the media. If they didn't report such stupid acts then people across the world wouldn't see what was happening. The media are now "concerned" that this could lead to revenge attacks (don't tell the whole world about it then!).

It doesn't help anyone to report this story. If this crazy pastor didn't have the publicity he probably wouldn't do it again.

Yes this guy is crazy.
Before he was a counselor in germany for a "community". Sentenced 3000€ because having a fake doctor title. After some missing money and false acclamation he got removed of his function in Germany. He just wants to get public attention

I just don't understand why media needs to push such story so far. If nobody knew about it, it wouldn't stir up the world.
now that's in every media around the world, everybody knows, he gets famous and that's what he wants

I can't believe this was all over the news. It started with the retards at the local news stations with a quick piece of this imbecile from Cousin-**** Florida. Now it's spread nationally... Ha. It makes me believe the media is trying to push the idea that Islam is responsible for terrorism.

Something tells me that he doesn't believe in recycling or global warming.

Poor crazy man... Now he'll never be able to enter a library without a strip and body cavity search. Maybe librarians should show up with fire extinguishers in order to prove a point of their own.

Update: Yup, I thought so...he's earned the ire of librarians:

If there is merit in this idea of restraining or arresting the man on the basis of a hate crime, why has no mention of this come from federal, state or local authorities? Patraeus and Obama have made it quite clear the consequences of burning the Quran in such a public spectacle could be very adverse to American interests in Muslim lands. Are our domestic freedoms so precious that the interests of an entire nation, the outcome of its expenditures and exertions of the past nine years, rest on the whim of one defective mind in Florida? Or is it conceivable that David and Barack would secretly like the fiery scene to eventuate as planned? What a perfect excuse for a liberal administration to run away from such profitless foreign adventures - betrayal on the home front by rabid fundamentalist sectarians! The acrid smoke and crackling flames are the sights and sounds of freedom marching on.

What. The. 🤬.
This is yet another way to get people sidetracked, instead of remembering the deaths during the WTC incident.

Every time I hear people threatening of burning books, Hitler's image comes to my mind.
Maybe he's only a pyromaniac looking for an excuse.....

What a nut. Then again, each religion has its extremists. You can't fight fire with fire (read: extremism with extremism), because then it just gets worse. Guys like him need to be castrated.

Lets hope the Gainesville Fire Department hosts an 'International Hose a Pile of Burning Books Day' next door to the church, in remembrance of their fallen 9/11 comrades.

This. And, frankly, I wouldn't mind gathering every religious book on the entire planet and burning them to generate steam electricity. Solve two big problems at once.

This just occured to me: how many generations of inbreeding between siblings do you have to go through to give birth to people as 🤬-up as him.

Freedom of speech be damned on this one. All this guy is doing is giving an excuse for more violence in the world. I know that 99% (or whatever) of Muslims are in no way terrorists or extremists, but the small percentage that are love this. They have ammo now to justify future attacks against our country, our military, and whatever else. I've never actually been angry at someone in the media before. Muslim extremist already hate America, and I don't understand why someone would be so ignorant as to fan the flames on that one.

And what's worse is that on Sept 12th I have to get on an aeroplane (one of my least favourite things in the world) to fly to Washington DC after Interpol has released warnings about the strong possibility for attacks. Not that I think my flight is going to be hijacked or anything. But if something does happen I'm grounded aways from home with no way to get back.

Maybe I'm over thinking this but the selfishness of the pastor and just the sheer stupidity of him and his blind followers irritate me to no end.

Eh all this shows to me is that America is only tolerant of Christians and no one else. It just makes me shake my head.
