Maybe they were expecting Mediums to fall off in a period where Max's Hards still had solid pace? It was a bit of an odd decision, but Mercedes have also screwed themselves plenty of times this year by not reacting immediately to Red Bull.

They don't need to win this race, they just need to beat Verstappen. Pitting one lap after a rival with a 7 second lead is not a silly move. Keeps you at least 5 ahead.
 
Max doesn't have the race pace that Lewis has.

Bottas' race craft is just painful to watch. Why can't they just show something else?

Edit: STFU Toto. Safety cars are there for safety. If the situation is unsafe, the safety car should come out, whether it "interferes with the race" or not.

That's stupid from Toto.

Is Hamilton screwed now? His tyres are going to be 23 laps older than Max's and he is only 21 seconds behind Hamilton.
 
Toto can do one, begging for not having a safety car. Even if a VSC is sufficient, you shouldn't say things like that.
