I'm still having fun with the game, with more than 200 hours logged even though I've long since beaten/three-starred every singleplayer challenge. It's no huge leap forward, but it's still unmatched in my book as far as its sweet spot of wide-ranging car selection and credible-yet-fun physics and handling goes. But I'm bewildered and annoyed and also a little concerned with how much the "FH6 is a crushing disappointment" narrative has taken hold online, especially on social media. There are a lot of common talking points: the story/characters/festival are bland, the customization is insufficient, online play is no fun because of all the meta car abuse, the rendition of Japanese culture isn't "realistic" enough, it's not enough like Forza Horizon 1, etc. etc. Normally I'd be able to brush it off, but since MS is in downsizing mode and Forza Motorsport is dead, I'm starting to wonder if there's some sort of moment where the bottom will drop out, all the casuals will migrate to GTA6 in a few months, and franchise fatigue will bring down a perfectly good game. I get being jaded; FH6 is more of a culmination than a revolution, and I've played other games that have a lot more character (TXR, Screamer) or customization (CarX series) or breadth (modded AC, which is in its own weird class). But whether it's physics or graphics or gameplay loop or just vibe, none of those scratch the same itch, so I'm wondering what the big deal is about all this performative boredom I see all the time on YouTube and Reddit.
