Free Web/File Hosts List

I'm using Brinkster at the moment. If anyone finds a faster no ads web host, drop me a PM.

I'm thinking about signing up for a cheap web host (I found one that was as low as $3AU a month) though.

Wow, thanks for the list ALPHA! 👍

I think the most important things to look for in a free host is FTP access, no file limits, and the ability to hot link images.

And the thing most of all is hosting without ads!

If my site is successful I might get a domain and hosting but it is unlikely that my site will be ever be very big.

I will agree with you that FTP access is important, nothing beats instantly uploading files. Also, no file limits would be good. Although, I don't think hot linking images is important. If your host does not allow hotlinking to images, try the following:

Code:
Place the following URL before the image location:

[url]http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/[/url]

So, it would be:

[b]http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/[/b]http://www.blahblahblah.com/image.jpg

How about using yourself as a free web host?

First of all, running my PC as a server would mean that visitors visiting my site would slow down my computer, not good for a computer that plays 3D games frequently. Second, I would have to have it running 24/7 or the site would be down.

You would probably find it difficult to run a web server on a software build that ran games anyway.

The issue with hosting your own server is one of static IP addresses.

Yeah, I just bought a POS machine that I'm running my old copy of Win 2000 on. I use that for my web server.

Static IP adresses rock, unless you want to keep yourself from getting your IP band. It costs like $10 extra to get a static IP from my DSL ISP, well worth it, in my opinion.I found a dynamic IP domain hosting service, once, where you could host a site with a dynamic IP, and an inbetween servver would just redirect visitors to the correct IP. I'll try to find it again, and post it here. I think it cost money though.

no-ip.com? they support dynamic ips, and there free.

Thank you for the list, Alpha. I just surfed in from Google looking for a new webhost that would allow me to hotlink an image to my online diary, but your http://invis.free.anonymizer.com/ hint did the trick. Can you explain why it works? And am I possibly breaking the rules of my webhost by using it to bypass the no hotlinking rule?

By the way, my host is www.1asphost.com, so you should probably edit your list to reflect the fact that it does NOT offer unlimited bandwidth anymore, (2nd host in 6 months to dump that service! :banghead: )

Thanks,
Folara

Thanks for the feedback.

This thread was posted ages ago and its not like anyone has actually checked the sites and what they offer - who would?

I'm not sure why the invis thingy works it just does because of its proxy/IP special thing.

And yup, I'll edit it!

Are you absolutely sure? I recently moved my site to their servers and on their main page it states that they still offer unlimited bandwidth. They still do, I think.

BTW, 1ASPHost 👍, Geocities :yuck:. I'm never going back to geocities. Thanks to this thread, I have found a much better host.

Well, I haven't investigated the matter much. All I know is that the image on my blog stopped appearing and was replaced with a "hotlinking not allowed" image. Doesn't sound like unlimited bw, does it?

Its still got unlimited bandwidth it just means that you can't hotlink images.

As in you can't use images on 1asphost and link to them on a different hoster otherwise they will appear as you have described - Hope I helped.

Yeah, but you have to register a domain with them, which costs money.

I just looked at their site again and I have NO idea where I found the option for a free site. . . but it IS on there.

I have been running my site off of them for only 2 weeks now.

:odd: Maybe I don't understand what bandwidth is then? I thought bandwidth and hotlinking were virtually synonymous.

So when does one use bandwidth without a hotlink? It is just whenever someone views a particular page or image?

Hotlinking is where you link directly to an image for example. Using the IMG tags on GTP and linking to an image from another site is hotlinking. Everytime that image get's viewed by someone, it is using up their bandwidth. That is why hotlinking is not allowed in some places; to keep bandwidth and their bill at the end of the month down.

I tried about 10 of those links. . .and about 7 of them no good anymore. Either they are not offering free hosting anymore, or they are completely shut down. :(

not really, my old site there had _TONS_ of "warez" "gamez" "freeware" links. it was mostly a download site and it was up for about 8-10 months before i took it down to redesign it ( which i currently am). and not once was i contaced by hostultra or anyone about my site
