Frustrated with Drift

This was a nice thread. What has happened.
Commentary police. Every thread has them. They sit online and wait for someone to say something they disagree with and dedicate tons of time trying to explain why they're wrong. Don't be sad though. It's still a nice thread.

So what you're saying is that you're a very closed-minded individual. Got it.
Yes. If it means you'll stop trying to change my mind. You posted a video, I took the time to watch it while at work rather than just waving it off, and I found it boring. The driver tandem drifted around a right-hand corner, than tandem drifted around a left-hand corner. Before and after drifts his mechanic leisurely made adjustments to the car. I understand that you were trying to show me the background aspects of drifting (which I appreciate), but that didn't make it any more exciting to me and I made a joke that it made me yawn. This clearly upset you and you said that made me close-minded. I chose to ignore that comment rather than argue with you over it because it's not that important for me to like drifting. Every one here will still live (hopefully) fulfilling lives whether I like drift or not. But maybe it's more important to you than I initially thought. Perhaps there is something in your life that absolutely depends on me liking the sport of drifting. You've posted twice now that I'm closed-minded, even though our conversation was over. I still haven't changed my mind so it hasn't worked. You will simply have to place your hopes and dreams on someone else's opinion of the sport. I mean it's either that or you really really want me to know that you think I'm closed-minded. I got it. I know now. Thank you.

You've written so many words on something you, apparently, hate and yet claim those commenting have spent more time? Then claim I don't like opinions while bemoaning these comment police for their opinions, which are generally built on a far less narrowed minded view of the world? We aren't trying to explain why you're wrong to be frustrated with drifting, what we are saying is bitching and more or less acting like an ass about what other people like is wrong. It is like you're sitting there telling someone why they shouldn't like vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate, and upset when they don't go along with your insistence that chocolate has more to offer.

From what I've gathered, you just wanted to post a rant and have people nod their heads in agreement. The reality is this forum is public and you're going to get some feedback you might not like. How you've handled it poor, at best, and slowly turning to strawmen and jabs.

Ah, and now the police sprinkle some crack on the dead body.

I never said I had an issue with someone not agreeing with me. You'll notice that @uMadson? was the first to disagree with me. I never told him to stop liking drift. I replied with a rather lengthy narration that highlighted why I think that grip racing is better. More action! More...everything. (there I go sharing my opinion again. I'm sorry, I know that upsets you.) Then @Wolfe commented (while not disagreeing), but he let me know he disagreed with the content or tone of my post. Said I sounded like a jerk. I, being unapologetic about sounding like one when ranting, simply replied "I'll be that." I mean, why not? When is a rant not someone sounding like a jerk? If I had intended to come off friendly, I'd have called it an opinion piece. (Sorry to drag your name back here, Wolfe. Just making a point.) But now, after Wolfe already made it clear that perhaps I'd gone about this the wrong way, you showed up. Perhaps you felt that he hadn't done an adequate job of chastising me or maybe the lack of humility in responding to him woke the mama bear in you up. I don't know which it was. I can only assume that you felt it was of the utmost importance to make the exact same point as Wolfe, except with a whole lot less grace. I'm sure it was meant to upset me and make me feel as insulted as you must have felt when you read my OP. Instead, it just reminded me a lot about my OP. I hate drifting. I ranted about it. You hate opinions (I'm sorry, insulting opinions). I pointed out the similarity. Welcomed you to the club of bitterness. :grumpy: <---- bitter face.

The first sentence in this thread is "This is a rant." Perhaps it caught you by surprise when you read the rest and realized it was exactly what I had called it. So you came her to complain that it was...a rant...by ranting. I let you know that you sounded just like my OP. Your post was pointless and you continue to try to validate it. But no. I guess I need to also accept your opinion of me (as I have umadson). So fine. I don't know what your exact opinion is, but I accept. You are right. I hope this has brought you true happiness. I also agree on the validity of your first post and all subsequent ones.

I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that @Azuremen has won this thread. Please direct any further posts that may highlight your dislike of something to his PM inbox before posting. Please do not agree with my OP. This may also be a violation.

So what you're saying is you hate opinions. Got it.

No, what he's saying is that he (and others as well) understand where you're coming from. They understand that you're frustrated about your team's decision to go drifting instead of grip racing.

The problem though, is that statements like...

I'm sick of drifting. I'm waiting for it to finally die out and go the way of extreme rollerblading.

I just need the world to realize that drifting can't ever hold a candle to real racing.
...it's a complete waste of money and sponsorship dollars.

...just make you come of as an ass really. It's ok to dislike something. It's NOT ok to say that the thing you don't like needs to die out, that the people that do like it "need" to realize that it is crap, and that they "need" to realize it's a waste of time & money, because you don't have anything to really back that up, other than your own personal opinion.

Now to the subject at hand. I think you need to give drifting a chance, because if what you say is true, and your team is really set on getting into drifting, then it's in your best interest to start making plans for your program. Learn about the events, what goes into them, the techniques drivers use and the crazy-ass race cars that they pilot. Also, when Formula Drift starts up next year, try to watch one of their events. They always livestream during the race weekend. You'll see just how much goes into every aspect of the event.

Also, your friend is 100% correct. You & your team can potentially get a good bit of publicity in drifting if you do well enough. And you know what? That would still apply to if you guys went grip racing instead. Who knows, maybe you'll find something about drift racing you didn't know about that'll catch your attention. :)

TL;DR, Your opinion is fine, the way you presented it wasn't, give drifting a chance, learn about the sport, and try to have some fun.

Hey I've got no choice here. Along with the decision to build a race car came the title "Director of Motorsport." So yeah, I've made a schedule of events and we know what we're entering. Scheduled test dates, got a driver, all that jazz. It's been a busy couple of days. Unfortunately the only delay now is waiting for a few sponsors to bite (haha, ironyyyy...). Anyway, point is that I'm giving drifting a chance whether I want to or not.

Since I've already addressed coming off as an ass in my original OP, I won't address it again. No offense.

None taken. While you may not be too keen on it, keep your chin up and try to have fun with the program. Hopefully your sponsors will answer you back and your team can get to shredding some tires. And like I said, you may find yourself getting into the sport...maybe.

Good Luck. :)

I wasn't trying to win the thread

You already pointed out what I was commenting on, your lack of humility and refusal to reconsider your claims that people "need" to realize your opinion.

Like @NotThePrez pointed out, it wasn't your opinion or frustration, but rather how you presented it and then went about dismissing others who reacted in an adverse way. Your tone just comes across as self-righteous and dismissive, to the point that I'm just assuming your "you were right comments" directed at me are simply sarcasm. If you're being sincere, then that is cool too. Mostly was just trying to say you'll persuade more people to your side if you back off on the jabs at drifting. Everyone has things that set them off (you should hear me rant about photography) but the difference is drifting is a serious business (unlike really bad selective color use) so considering it as a side line could help pull sponsors. And maybe I was thinking you could prevent some premature grey hair and wrinkles if you reduced the bitterness :p

Also, congrats on getting some events lined up and logistics sorted out. I have a pretty big soft spot for E30's and several friends of mine run them in various comps up in Washington, along with some E36's and an E39 (well ran, till the M5 was rolled) so I do wish you the best.

I was being sarcastic.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Drifting seems to be controlled failure IMHO.
I'm not a fan.
I see drifting as the #1 enemy of the import car scene.
Competition is based entirely on opinion outside of blatant disregard for match rules.

Drifting is fun and awesome kicks for everyone involved but as a "motorsport" it falls in at the back of the pack behind dirt track homemade cars. 👎

Just my opinion, don't get too upset.

Dirt track homemade cars. Boy I miss Georgia.

I think I may have a way to do both types of racing next season without it costing us a ton of money. There will be tons of publicity leading up, which should get sponsors. Our current fans will go ape**** over the concept, and we'll inevitably get new fans too. I'm not going to share details because that's unnecessary, but just know I have a huge grin on my face right now.

All I gotta do now is get the big boss to say yes. :scared:

But if he does...'twill be epic.

I'll be sure to come back to this thread when appropriate.
