Can anyone help me pick between group C cars and TDI cars. I want to know which is faster, handles better, and which uses the least fuel and tires.:dunce:

Just going by real life the diesels are dominating. 908 HDI FAP (love saying that:sly:) or R10 TDI should do well if fuel consumption is a concern for you, not so sure if they would be any better on tire wear though.

Too bad there is no R18 in this iteration, that car probably just scares the competition away with its Audi LEDs.

I don't think petrol or diesel makes a difference in the game. I did a 25 lap run on the Rome track (my usual Test Track) with fuel usage with the BMW 120i and 120d (as they are close in terms of weight and power, though the diesel is a little heavier and also slightly more powerful) in a race situation and the petrol one was more economical by a small amount which would not be true in real life I suspect.

Thanks for the input guys. I've settled on a 908 HDI FAP (team matmut). I chose the car because it looked cool IMO and because I already have the minolta.💡

This is interesting. Yea, theoretically the diesel should get better milage in civilian situations, I don't know about for racing, though. Doesn't the diesel have a lower redline than the gas-powered version, too?

The diesel LMP cars dominate in real life, in part due to their efficiency.
Not sure if it's the same in the game though.

The problem is their mileage now in real competition in terms of distance per tank is not that different from gas car. Since diesel now are limited to smaller gas tank. When the first came out in 2006 with the R10 TDI, it has the same size gas tank as the petrol car and it can regularly run at least 1 lap if not 2 laps longer around Le Mans(Circuit de la Sarthe in GT5). Which is a huge advantage since not only they get better mileage it was also faster. Through the last few years they are progressively "trying" to make it more even but the big teams like Audi and Peugeot have much in reserve that they are still much faster car(diesel or not). But mileage wise they are now not that different from gas cars...

In GT5 it seems the tank size are the same for all cars anyway....I kinda doubt the consumption is that different...and most of the fast race cars like the LMPs or Group C cars seems pretty even if in real life one should be faster than the other...so I kinda think real world has little bearing on this in game...

The diesel 120 does redline lower than the petrol one by about 2000 rpm which I am sure in real life helps with the fuel consumption, that plus the efficiency. The difference for 25 laps was small. The 120i needed 23 litres (approximately) on the pit stop at the end of lap 25 and the diesel wanted 24 litres. Both of which equate to around 10 miles to the gallon!!

When I want to try something different I will run with a manual gearbox at an oval at a constant 80-100 mph (depending on pulling power) in top gear on both 120's and compare fuel usage on that. The diesel should definitely come out on top with that.

Try this:

Gas vs Diesel - LMP

Toyota GT-One race car, Bently speed 8 or Audi R8 LM RC vs Peugeot 908 HDi fap or Audi R10 TDI.

Mostly they dominate because they cheat by having massive engines compared to the petrol/gas cars. Or they are turbocharged when the petrol/gas are normally aspirated.
That's why diesel wins Le Mans and Touring Cars etc.
As well as giving the petrol cars a weight penalty balast. And the new diesel teams have been made of money backed by a top manufacturer. Given the right rules and money Audi could win Le Mans with cars running on melted butter.
